This is the first celebrity/athlete death that I can recall recently that's made me feel like my...grief (?) is way out of proportion, and it makes me feel like a monster. I understand that he was important to Cuban-Americans, and that fans felt connected to him because he was charismatic. But I just wanted to watch him pitch, and I feel weird knowing that I would be less upset if this were another pitcher who happened to be not quite as good, like Max Scherzer or David Price or whoever. As if their performance mattered if they died young.

I've dealt with enough death, so I should know how to handle these things by now. Guess I'll never get used to it. This sucks.

The thing that gets me is that he died on a boat. His father made multiple trips on a boat to escape Cuba. Then he and his mom also tried many times to flee on a boat, his mom even falling into the sea once. That last place I would expect him to be is on a boat.

This is one for psychiatrists but my father fled Vietnam on a boat to the Philippines. And to this day he won't go on a boat. Not even a cruise.

Word. The nurse I worked with this afternoon escaped Cuba by boat when he was 19yo (he is my age). He and about 20 people fell off the boat, a couple of them drowned. His bigger fear was they were still in Cuban waters at the time.

He hasn't been on too many boats in the four decades since.
