Its very possible our three best pure shooters this year were all not on last year's team.

I love Kadri but not even having a hearing on that hit, let alone 5+ games off, is a serious problem. Its like they're competing against the NFL to see who can have someone die mid-game first by tacitly allowing those sorts of hits.

The problem is that the NHL doesn't care about blindsides and the repeat offender part only comes into play for suspension length not the suspension itself. CBC slowed the video down and it was clear the first point of contact was the shoulder and not the head. So Kadri gets off.

First point of contact... side by side... blah blah blah... it was a cheap, dirty unprovoked blindside hit on a good, clean player. (If it was done to Burrows instead, I could understand...).

What SC said. And if that hit is determined to be legal, then change that rule.

It's not legal, there was a 5 minute major assessed. It's just not suspension worthy according to the NHL.

It should be completely forbidden, a 5-10 game suspension for intent to injure. There's no good outcome there, just maybe not bad.

The latest Puck Soup podcast was with Echevarrieta and Burke of NHL Player Safety. I thought it was really good.

This. It was very good and a bit enlightening to their process.

While we're on the topic: Matthew Tkachuk, 18-year-old rookie for Calgary who I want to love, had his second very bad hit over the weekend, elbowing Jeff Carter in the face. He's been in the league for a month, and he already has a reputation. I hate when players I like do this stuff.

When we had this conversation a few years ago (and I hate the fact that we keep having this exact same conversation every single year), I said that it somehow bothered me more when it was a skilled player instead of a fringe player. Like, I can almost understand Zac Rinaldo, but why Max Pacioretty?

In the few Flames games I've watched this year, he DEFINITELY plays like it's still his dad's era. I didn't see any of the bad hits, but saw quite a few clean, but crushing hits.

Also, I really want Drouin to learn to watch out for hits. He got destroyed legally in the playoffs last year vs. the Isles, and then concussed in his first shift against them a week ago. He is electric when on the ice, and this team could really use his dynamic play.

Or Marchand, who had a puff piece written last week that included the line (paraphased) "He's delivered cheat shots in the past and he'll do it again".

I was going to mention Marchand. He seems to be entering that stage of his career where everybody re-evaluates his play. But it's only a matter of time until we all say, 'Oh, yeah, he's still Brad Marchand.'

Chedda, Drouin fascinates me. I said when he was in juniors that his closest comp was a young Ovechkin: often the best player on the ice, but too emotional and often reckless, would do whatever he wanted whether it was good for the team or not. If he keeps playing on the edge, he's going to keep taking hits like that. He's an obvious target.

For someone with such dazzling offensive skill, he clearly knows how to skate while not looking down at the puck. Yet, he gets his ass rocked on the reg, and got a concussion out of this recent one. That being said, he has easily been my favorite Bolt F so far this year. He operates at a speed that very few else in the league do. I didn't watch enough young Ovechkin to comment on that comp, but I'm really hoping he continues to mature his game, with the next step being keeping his fucking head up.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
NYR trade Dylan McIlrath to FLA for Steve Kampfer and conditional 7th round pick*.

*If Dylan McIlrath plays 30 games this season, NYR get 2018 7th-rounder.

Similar situations. Kampfer had been a healthy scratch in 12 of the last 13 games, and was recently put on waivers.

Anybody want to talk about the fact that Patrik Laine scored another hat trick last night? That's exciting, right?

And Blues/Blackhawks are on tv tonight. That's, like, a thing that we can watch. (No, I don't care, either.)

I need a distraction. Any ideas, puck bros?

Laine is going to be a good one. Scheifele was already good last year without him. Bolts play tomorrow vs. the Isles. Taking my oldest with me.

That's all I've got right now for uplifting hockey talk.

Can't drink while I'm sick. I was thinking more along the lines of puck-related YouTube or something. Doesn't even have to be puck-related. Just...something other than Fox/CNN/MSNBC. I'm going to start writing sonnets about Trump if I don't unplug pretty soon. Maybe I can write Patrik Laine sonnets.

I'm untweakable as far as the Rangers go at this point. Only a horror trade or a targeted injury could throw me off.
