The civil aviation agency had initially announced that six passengers -- three players, two crew members, and one journalist -- survived the crash. Authorities told CNN en Español's Fernando Ramos over the phone that one of those survivors died on the way to the hospital.

it's really sad, little team making a miracle run travelling to the Final (Europa League equivalent)
Kung Fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene..

Well it is not unprecedented. You have Man U in Munich (1958), Marshall in 1970, and Old Christians Club rugby union in 1972 (5 dead but lots know about what survival took there)mister d wrote:I can't even fathom this happening in a US major.

I know it is probably too early to think about things like this but do these clubs have youth/reserve sides. I have to believe they do. Will be interesting to see what happens to a club like this.
Also class act by the team they were heading to play, "Give them the trophy". Probably also too soon, but class act.

Re: Colombia plane crash / Chapecoense
I'm sure they have reserve teams, but I imagine the league will do some sort of expansion draft/priority signing thing.
You know what you need? A lyrical sucker punch to the face.

Howler has a bunch of interesting stuff on what is going on.

Also they wrote about 2 other plane crashes (Lima in 87 and Torino in 49)

Some of the pictures are tough (3 players who did not make the trip) in the locker room. What A Howler Magazine wrote: Back in Brazil, Flamengo, Palmeiras and Sao Paulo have all offered to loan players to Chapecoense for free. They have also asked that Chapecoense be exempt from relegation for three years. In addition, Palmeiras, who have already won Brazil’s domestic title this season and were the last opponents Chapecoense faced, have stated their desire to wear Chapecoense’s kit during their last match of the season.

I drift away from Howler often, but damn if they don't do an excellent job on the site, magazine and podcasts. Ran into George Quraishi at the YMCA once. He was wearing a Howler T, and I thought it might be him from his mug shot in the magazine. It was, and he was a great guy to talk to for a few minutes.wlu_lax6 wrote:Howler has a bunch of interesting stuff on what is going on.

So Fox in Brazil just showed a black screen for 90 minutes in the slot that was supposed to have the game. Classy move.

Saw something on Twitter this morning that states the jet ran out of fuel and crashed. Apparently the pilots were frantically calling for an emergency landing due to low fuel, and the jet didn't explode on impact.

Re: Colombia plane crash / Chapecoense
This reads like an accident of this sort is almost inevitable in South American soccer, what with the topography and clubs operating on tight budgets. And not just clubs, but the Argentine FA:
Among Lamia’s customers were Atletico Nacional, Chapecoense’s would-be opponents in Medellín, and Argentina’s national football team. The squad’s luminaries, including Lionel Messi, perhaps the greatest player of all time, boarded the doomed Lamia plane just two weeks before the crash, flying from Buenos Aires to Belo Horizonte for a World Cup qualifier.
