Degen's mom creates a sculpture in her spare time, which depicts degen "bonding" with a capybara. According to the description, "the capybara looks sleepy and drunk with love." We sell it to a passing trade ship for $376.

We get a new wanderer, an 81-year old woman named Ceti who is described as "ugly," "slothful," and having "bloodlust." Welcome!

duff and EnochRoot come down with malaria. duff has a mental breakdown and gets out of his hospital bed and begins wandering around the base. We can't let him do this, since his malaria would go untreated and he could die. AB goes to apprehend him, but duff fights back furiously, swinging his club and knocking off AB's right thumb. Finally AB knocks out duff with his rifle butt and we drag him back to the infirmary.

Another new joiner: Julia, a 60-year old drug-addicted psychopath with an old gunshot wound to the head. She has a "green thumb," though, so there's that.

We're attacked twice in quick succession by a tribe called Black Magpie Billa. They're primitively armed, so we quickly drop them without too much trouble.

Uh oh, look at this. We made the mistake earlier of leaving a hollowed-out area behind the wall when we built the rec room, and now that space has become home to an infestation of giant insects. Look at these things! That must be some cockroach! Bite your head off man.

Just a heads up, I've never run into these before so I don't know how tough they'll be. You guys are going to be my guinea pigs. We take our positions and knock out a portion of the wall to let them through. Here we go.

The first one rushes out and heads straight for Giff, snapping with giant claws. We bring it down with a shower of bullets, but not before Giff sustains several large gashes and a stray gunshot wound--there's your cue, GO!

The second makes for EnochRoot and is similarly brought down after a struggle. We destroy the hive. Left over is "insect jelly," which I'm not sure what to do with. PDX promptly eats it. I guess that's OK? With that out of the way, we set about sealing off the space to prevent this from happening again.

Julia, the drug-addled psychopath we picked up a little while ago, raids our store of crucial anti-malaria medicine to try to get high. She passes out and dies of infected wounds from an earlier fight. Good.

It looks like an update was released just today that allows you to do this. You can also move your colony to a new area, run multiple colonies at once, and send trade caravans to other factions. It would break the current save game, though, so I'll finish out this current session before applying the update.

Lunch update:

Here come The Loyal Frogs again. They knock a hole in our wall and pour through. The first two are only equipped with knives and clubs and are dropped easily, but the third has an incendiary grenade launcher. AB is hit by an incendiary round and catches on fire! He runs around flailing, trying to put out the flames. Moreta rushes into the gap, narrowly dodging a few rounds herself before bringing down the last pirate with her assault rifle. AB suffers burns to his chest, arms, and jaw, but will recover.

duff gets involved in another fist fight, this time with Degen's mom.

We get a brewery up and running and before long AB has developed an alcohol tolerance, which is described as "small." Yeah right.

Uh oh. A couple of mechanoid robots appear. We rush to take our defensive positions when we realize that duff, who has been out dutifully gathering resources, is caught isolated as the robots approach. Two quick laser blasts to the torso and duff dies instantly! RIP duff. I forgot to add you to the poll after you joined, but you "win" the first Swamper to die contest. Congratulations!

Our predicament suddenly gets worse as Degen's mom, Lacey, has a mental break while we are still awaiting the approach of the robots. Wanting to handle this gently, we send the other older lady, Ceti, to apprehend her but Lacey knocks her out cold. PDX has to run over and wound Lacey with a spear to incapacitate her and drag her to the infirmary. Finally we are ready to brace for the attack.

The first robot emerges from a tunnel through the mountain and we unload on it. Magnolia the capybara rushes forward and draws most of the fire but is grievously wounded. We bring down the first robot, and then the other emerging behind it. We prevail, but Magnolia has lost multiple appendages and the only humane thing to do is euthanize him. RIP Magnolia, you maybe weren't Marshmallow but were at least better than Karl.

Morning update:

The Loyal Frogs are back. This time it looks like they're going to try to use explosives to breach our defenses. They blast a hole though our back wall and begin tossing grenades around our quarters but we quickly corner and dispatch them. In addition to their grenades they leave behind some beer and cocaine.

A "poison ship" has landed. Remember this thing? That didn't work out so well last game. We'll need to destroy it quick, but can't be too rash in our tactics.

And we did it! We keep enough distance between us to avoid giving the robot a concentrated target, and its incendiary rounds disperse with just a few injuries on our end. We continue riddling it with gunfire while degen's mom sneaks in to toss grenades looted from the pirates earlier, and the robot eventually collapses.

Should mention that PDX had suffered a shattered femur in an earlier battle and was hobbling around with severely reduced mobility. We gave him a peg leg and then recently upgraded to a prosthetic one.

Some turnover with our non-Swamper colonists: Ceti, who had been surprisingly useful for an 82-year-old with various maladies, finally succumbs to malaria. We have a small battle with tribespeople and successfully recruit two captives to our side: a guy named Aqanquiero and a woman named Cambiar. Aquanquiero is a big dumb guy who can help with the grunt work, while Cambiar is skilled with a gun and medicine, but a "creepy breather" - too bad she couldn't have met Ryan.

The tribespeople we tangled with before, Black Magpie Billa, decide they are not fucking around anymore and launch a major assault. That's...a lot. They approach and begin battering the walls all along the perimeter. If they break through, they'll be able to overwhelm us from multiple directions. Our best bet is to take the fight to them so we can maintain a concentrated base of fire. We knock down a section of wall and sweep out to attack.

A couple of them charge us, PDX runs to intercept them and his left arm is cut off! Our people with guns take up position behind a row of rocks and start firing away. There are a shitload of them, though, and they're raining down arrows on us. Degen's mom, Lacey, sneaks along the wall and tosses grenades at the enemy positions, downing several of them. They send a few to attack her, she turns to run but is hit in the back by three arrows and dies! RIP Lacey, we'll remember you for your brave grenade-tossing exploits and for your sculpture of your son humping a capybara.

Moreta and Giff make a flanking maneuver and our firepower from multiple directions continues to mow down the attackers. They flee, leaving 13 dead on the field, but not without cost to us. In addition to degen's mom and PDX's arm, our new pet Spartak dies in the fight. AB and EnochRoot also suffer multiple injuries.

PDX gets another prosthetic limb.

A short time later, they launch another similar scale attack, losing another 12. Our weapons and tactics are proving effective, but we can't afford many more losses.

If you're curious, here are the current kill counts for Swampers:
- degen: 15
- Moreta: 12
- Giff: 12
- AB: 10
- EnochRoot: 4
- PDX: 3

So we've come to our next major decision point. A huge pack of man-hunting wargs (like wolves, but bigger and even more aggressive) appears on the map. Unfortunately, they've shown up right near where Moreta happens to be out collecting resources.

Here's the thing--Moreta still has enough distance on the wargs that if she runs back to the base, she can make it inside before they run her down. However, the wargs will pursue her, and they're smart enough and strong enough to beat down the doors after her. One warg is a major threat, a pack this large will in overwhelming likelihood result in everyone being wiped out.

Or, Moreta could accept her fate and stay where she stands. The wargs will annihilate her in seconds, but this will keep them from discovering the base. We can then lock down and wait them out.
