Winter Reading Thread

Post by Pruitt »

It's mid-December and I see snow. Therefore, it's winter.

This book is so good. Chabon is an absolutely amazing writer.

There are sections of this book that are just perfect. So evocative, so full of life, that you can't imagine a single comma not being there, or an extra word added to the sentences. But unlike so many other highly-regarded writers, he is mainly interested in telling a story. And this is a fantastic story.

I have Kliph Nesteroff listed in my phone's notes app, and I had no idea why. When I hear an interesting book on a podcast, I note it. Probably for this book, so thanks.

I heard him on Gilbert Gottfried's (occasionally entertaining) podcast a couple of times.

It's very anecdotal, but he ties the eras together nicely. And some of the stories are hysterical.

I just finished "Kafka On The Shore", and typical of most Murakami books, it was amazingly written, but I'm not really sure what it was about or what he was trying to say.

I'm currently reading:

which was an Amazon special for $0.05. Its an interesting concept...main character is a soldier, fighting in an intergalactic war, and because of the relativistic time shifting, his 2 years of service translates into 20+ years being away from Earth. I'm not usually much of a science fiction reader, but this one is good, and I'm cranking through it pretty fast.

I'm maybe 2-3 chapters in, and I'd agree. I was also really disappointed with Kurlansky's Paper and Bryson's The Road to Little Dribbling.

Damn it, popular non-fiction writers! Start pleasing me!

Just finished this - food writer spends a few months in Japan with young family. Nothing much happens, but fairly interesting.

Dipping into this one on a regular basis. 100 stories, and so far most are excellent.

And thanks to the recommendations hereabouts, just started this last night. May have it done by tomorrow!

Grabbed this (book on cd)as my little one was pulling me out of the library. Cool premise and it is read by a variety of actors. Wasn't expecting much, but I really like it so far.

about a third of the way into this bad boy. Excellent read so far. Dense, but highly entertaining.

Finished this last week. Best book I've read all year! (Fascinating look at well, heads, especially LSD and how it influenced art, music, etc.)

Image

and before that I read pieces of this (to get tips on brew in a bag for all-grain)

I vaguely remember the end of this scandal when I was a kid.

But it is a crazy story... and so very, very British. (Very entertaining)

I read a bit about Thorpe in some book I read rather recently. Goodreads tells me it's Can't Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain, and America.

The Thorpe book was great. Truth being stranger than fiction and all that.

Looking at how geography has influenced politics throughout history and into the presence. Pretty good so far.

Just love me some folk tales! There are a few creepy ones in here.
