Umbras and Penumbras - The Sun is Going Away
Apologies if we already have a Total Eclipse of the Sun thread.
But check out this simulator on Vox. Enter your Zip Code and find out how total the eclipse will be in your area.
I get 91.4%. I think Fritz would have me beat. And do we have anyone still in North Carolina?
Also, I can't decide whether to stay here and watch from my house, or drive up to Stanley Idaho or Grand Teton National Park and get in the path of totality.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

This could have been something in the Random Thoughts thread, but I've never "seen" an eclipse in my life (in the sense of paying active attention to one). It seems like something I should be interested in, but I never felt compelled to plan for it. Maybe this will be my first.

I've heard (unconfirmed) that AirBNB's in Bend, OR are going for like $1k+. Some hippie-dippy fests happening as well, naturally.
Re: Umbras and Penumbras - The Sun is Going Away
Something like 80 percent obscurity here in Cleveland. I have friends who are driving to southern Illinois to see it at totality. Wish I could join them, but I can't.

I've seen the same stories (and believe it). Most of Oregon is going to be douched with tourists for this.
For swampers, think Joe K and Fritz might be getting the best of it. Looks like it's total in STL?

For my part there was a total eclipse I about four or five years ago I want to say. It was total up in Reno so I went up there for the weekend and bought the special viewing glasses from the UNR planetarium and the whole deal. It was pretty awesome.

I remember the annular eclipse before that, which happened on May 10, 1994. I was in college, and I remember watching it from a nearby apartment building. What I mostly remember was how cold it got when the sun was mostly obscured. I bet the temperature dropped 15-20 degrees.

77% in Naples. Still never seen one so I put it on my calendar, even though we're getting a C.

In 5th grade they gave us these glasses (flimsy cardboard ones) that let us stare directly into the sun without issue. It was neat, but all of us were happy to be outside playing rather than inside learning dumb 5th grade stuff.

Huh. I think that one faded before it got to us.
I remember pretty solid solar eclipses from 1991 and 1984 - but in the pre-Internet days, you really didn't know they were coming. You just had to stumble across them. (Like soccer.)
The freakiest thing is that during an eclipse, the shadows in the plants show the moon blocking out part of the sun.

Jeez.
And if I live to 80 (and don't move), I'll have one pass right down the street.

Yeah, that one in 2045 looks pretty awesome. I might have to see if I can get a visa to come back to Trumpistan for that one.

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: Umbras and Penumbras - The Sun is Going Away
97.4% here. May drive up to the N. Georgia mountains to partake in the darkness.

Yes. Just got back to the states after a month in Europe. Looks like I'm only getting 93.2% though.

Planned our summer vacation to be in South Carolina that week near Beaufort, SC. I'll drive the hour or so north to catch it all.

Re: Umbras and Penumbras - The Sun is Going Away
Starting to see articles online about the massive amounts of people expected along the line of totality and how infrastructure is going to be pushed to the max and beyond. Smaller towns and counties requesting Federal Aid to be ready for the influx and to have the proper amount of law enforcement around, medication in hospitals, etc.
Bit overboard I would say.

Just ordered two pairs of $3 eclipse glasses and paid $9 in shipping.

I want to see the eclipse, but I will also be very happy to see it cloudy so I can watch local news outlets panic and try to make up for the month of buildup stories they've been doing.
I'm also just not sure what to expect. The topic of the day today was a small town 35 miles north of here. They are "expecting" anywhere between 50K-200K people in the town to watch the eclipse. Uh, that's a big range.

Those stories will just change. Airbnbs, Hotels, Restaurants, Gas Stations, mini golf, etc will still get to talk about the economic boom and you will get the weather team and similar in their l.l. bean branded gear talking to Joan Q. Public about the disappointment. Lots of kids with Popsicle running around "finding fun anyway"...because America makes the best of the hand that is dealt.
oh and 2nd on the eyesight with knockoff glasses.

I found a site recently that brought this up and listed reputable manufacturers and sellers of these glasses. I don't have the link any more, but the site listed the Great Lakes Science Center as selling them, so that's where I bought them.

They sell them at Lowes. $1.99. ISO-certified.

Re: Umbras and Penumbras - The Sun is Going Away
My eye doctor could hand them to me along with a $1MM check to cash if something went wrong and I'd still view staring at an eclipse as a bad risk/reward venture.

I was at the Opthalmologist's yesterday, and I asked about which special glasses I should buy. She told me that she didn't have a recommendation.
Just be smart and wear good sunglasses and do not look directly at the eclipse. (It'll be 60% of totality up here. Watch with the peripheral vision and use TV coverage for the head on view.
Reassuring, but kind of strange.

I love this shit. And while I'm bummed I couldn't make the drive totality, I'm glad to have a view out a window.
