Feel bad for Puerto Rico. That place is already in bad shape and if it takes even a glancing blow from this storm...

Guess whose entire nuclear family lives in Wilmington? My sister is a prof at UNCW, and my parents moved there within the last year to be closer to her.

Also, try making decisions on evacuating millions when a slight jog takes the storm 25 miles off the coast of Florida moving north as opposed to straight onto the peninsula.

In any event, no worries, I'll stop posting in the discussion of it.

I saw a headline that the storm was headed directly towards some mansion Trump owns in the Caribbean. Didn't care enough to click. Wasn't there some scandal a while back that Trump collected enormous claims from hurricane damage when his property wasn't really damaged?

Indian Beach.

There are trailer parks (permanent ones - "nice" ones) on either side of our condo building. Last weekend, a quick glance showed at least 20 American flags flying above various trailers. So, I gotta figure that kind of patriotism will convince Jesus to steer that hurricane towards a gayer location. So, we're probably good.

Or a lot of nice, open land on either side of our condo! Win-win.

the red rarely gets that dark, but the google says, west palm beach to Orlando 3:36, only 30 min longer than the reverse trip. But rush hour, and later in the week could plum new shades of red mixed with black.

Ain't that the truth. Since I cut cable I've been subjected to the local 24 hr weather and it's bad. They loop a lot and still can't rid themselves of incompetence. The lady's contribution yesterday was that she is 5'6" and that the storm surge will be twice her height. Just the type of observations we expect from highly educated science professionals.

based off the maps in South Florida right now, waiting to evacuate at the last minute seems like the good traffic decision

My wife's college friend is in FL for vacation, last I heard they were hunkering down. Not sure I'd stay if I owned a place, I sure as hell wouldn't if I was in a hotel!

Best of luck to the FL swampers, and just people in general, excepting Rush Limbaugh of course.

Thanks everybody. Things are fine now. Hurricane shutters are a bitch to put up, especially when they've shrunk and don't necessarily fit they way they should. We're in Zone A, and are contemplating our next few days. We have no large trees around us at our house, and I don't think this will be a big flooding event for us. Our other option is our in laws' house, out of any type of flood zone, but it's in Brandon, closer to the center of the state, and Irma's probable path. It's also near a bunch of old trees/potential projectiles. We've got water, beer, food, propane, camping gear, etc.

In laws are in Bradenton and not evacuating. SIL is 9 months pregnant and they have a 2 yr old, but decided to stay at home. They are slightly further inland from my wife's parents, where Zone A literally touches their back yard. Not only are they staying, but extended family going TO their house instead of everyone going to SIL's house. SIL also has storm shutters, parents do not. So stubborn/stupid all around....

Good luck to everyone down there, looking rough for the gulf coast.

Just got to Leesburg...couldn't let my grandma ride it out alone. I've never seen every projection model line up like they do right now. I don't think Naples has ever taken a direct shot from a major cane, so even though most construction is new and should be up to Andrew code, who the hell knows. I'm getting worried...that shit is going to rock the nape unless it has a major unexpected turn. I should be fine in LBurg as long as I'm not out running through the street like an idiot. Too bad the fucker is gonna get here at like 2am

Good friend of mine is due to deliver tomorrow. Lives in Siesta Key.

Steve, yes, it sounds like it is tracking west. SL, grandmother or not, is making a wise decision heading north. Sounds like it should lose a bit of power as it fucks the state right up the ass. Still contemplating our move tomorrow.

How much longer than normal was your drive GPJ? Heard stories of friends' trips to Atlanta taking 17 hours, instead of the normal 8.

About 15 minutes longer than usual. Got off 75 at I4 and took back roads from there. Wasn't bad at all but had to wait about 30 mins for gas when I got here.
