Externally we as an institution are used as a political talking point, yes.

But individually we can't state political issues from our point of view or talk back to our civilian leaders in DC. We're neutral and are forced to live in a bubble which sucks because then were used to propagate bullshit platitudes like "kneeling for the flag is an insult to our military."

I'm not following. Is that meant for me?

I can't say things publicly in uniform derogatory of politicians. They're my bosses and I work for an apolitical entity. That's part of the 'sacrifice' when joining. I volunteer to give up some of my rights. The military is socialist, totalitarian, state run, and communist - not democratic.

Just a general observation. As in, in normal times treating people decently would not be considered a partisan issue.

The charts and graphs here display hashtags, topics and URLs promoted by Russia-linked influence networks on Twitter. Content is not necessarily produced or created by Russian government operatives, although that is sometimes the case. Instead, the network often opportunistically amplifies content created by third parties not directly linked to Russia. Common themes for amplification include content attacking the U.S. and Europe, conspiracy theories and disinformation. Russian influence operations also frequently promote extremism and divisive politics in Western countries. Just because the Russia-aligned network monitored here tweets something, that doesn’t mean everyone who tweets the same content is aligned with Russia.

Seems awfully vague and potentially tautological, doesn't it? Like do we really think that MAGA-types bitching about Kaepernick is a Russia-linked operation? And there's a risk that squishy definitions of what's "Russia-aligned" can be used to discredit all kinds of political causes. For example, there have been attempts -- by this organization and others -- to tie support for movements like Ferguson/Black Lives Matter and anti-fracking to Russia.

This is my conspiracy brain talking, but it clicked the other day that our need to be constantly wired to social media was hijacked in such a way by the Russians that they flooded our feeds with such a grotesque amount of bullshit that it destabilized our normal day to day interactions.

They are paying all sides of the fence simultaneously in stoking the flames of internal deconstruction. It's created a psychological civil war. Russian cannot invade invade is physically, so they've made us break down mentally.

Find a hashtag, "DDoS" the shit out of it, and watch us get pissed at ourselves. It's genius.

And if none of this makes sense, sorry. I did an Escape Room last night with friends and had a great time.

But there are no guns being used by their riot police. People aren't dying for their independence.

I've been following events in Catalonia closely over the last several weeks, and today. I also re-read Orwell's Homage to Catalonia last week, for some historical context (highly recommended, wonderful like all things Orwell.)

As well as federal police, "Guardia Civil" (kinda a combo of FBI/ATF/ICE with a little military police-national guard mixed in, all under Madrid control) fighting local firemen, pictured in Johnnie's post, there were local cops protecting protesters and voters from those same federal stormtroopers. (sorry, I suppose 'stormtrooper' is an editorial comment.). Apparently the US isn't the only country still fighting an old civil war, although theirs only ended in 1939, not 1865. Video reports today and recently include images of Franco and anarchist flags; at least American mid-19th vexillology (sorry, studying for Jeopardy!) is more simple. But I digress.

Barca played their home game today before an empty stadium. They requested La Liga postpone because of the vote, request was denied, and their protest was to keep the gates locked and allow no spectators (also to prevent violence.). Thought this might be of interest here, just the football related intro to this blog post, the rest I haven't vetted yet and disagree with many points, but like I said the footy part which I copied and pasted:

Més Que un Club

(NB: See update at the end of this post.)

Don’t worry, this one isn’t just a sports story…

Introduction

The motto of FC Barcelona is “més que un club,” more than a club. For the purposes of full disclosure, I agree. It’s more than a club; it’s one of God’s greatest gifts to leisure time.

- How Soccer Explains the World, by Franklin Foer

Manuel Vazquez Montalban, a contemporary writer in Spain, describes the club as “the epic weapon of a country without a state….” Why?

Buried in the tradition of this club is the division within Spain – the communist / anarchist Catalans (represented by FC Barcelona), and the fascist followers of Franco (represented by the club Real Madrid). After Franco’s forces finally secured Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, the fourth organization to be purged (according to the aforementioned Montalban) – after the communists, the anarchists, and the separatists – was the Barcelona Football Club.

Franco would go on to destroy all the team’s trophies, execute the club’s president, remove the Catalan flag from the team’s crest, and change the name into one of Castilian Spanish.

But Spain was united…for whatever that is worth.

now the fun with flags:

I was in Barcelona three years ago, and it was a rare street that didn't have a number of Catalan flags on display. This is a situation that will get really ugly, really fast. The Spanish government seems to want to revert to Franco era tactics. And considering the fact that anyone in that country over the age of 45 has some memory of living under a Fascist government... these are very unpleasant memories to be stirring up.

This is really interesting, and I agree it could turn out to be hugely significant. Could happen fast, otoh could take months or years to play out with independence, and/or widespread violence (no deaths reported so far today. It is just criminal our media first ignores this, then cover it only superficially, and throw in crap like 'Putin/Assange are behind this', crap that casual viewers actually believe.

Fascinating times. Here's another photo:

ok, last one today, promise. Guardia Civil at work, the crime, voting. Clearly the women and elderly are the most dangerous, hence their targeting, a pattern seen in many other instances. Cowardice of many cops is universal.

Followed this all online today while traveling. There are some horrific videos, and you've included the one I've seen going around the most.

Homage to Catalonia is an excellent start to some background on this story. Last time I was there I took a walking tour (where I ended up being the only one on the tour, other than the guide) based on spots included in that book, and about the Spanish Civil War, generally.

I bought another book recently that was advertised as just as good about the war as Homage to Catalonia. Haven't cracked it yet, but will likely do so soon, given recent events. (When I remember the title, I'll post it here)

Barcelona is one of my favorite places. So much so, that for our childrens' first trip overseas, we have a trip scheduled for March 2018.

Most importantly Barca won 3-0 today.
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.

Thump's secret service, NYPD and TV trucks clogging up my main route home after work is bad enough. This, just fuck me in the ass.

EXCLUSIVE
Obamas eyeing Upper East Side apartment

actually not all that close to me, and that block is tucked away from anywhere I usually go, except visiting two friends who live near there. I haven't bitched about 0bama much lately, gotta stay in practice.

Back to things that are important, here is a great discussion on Catalunya, in the comments section a range of views, info and guesses as to what's next. The main article, prior to the comments, Yves is guessing and my guess is different from hers (I think it is too early to consider this a blink by the Catalan govt), but she admits no one knows what is gonna happen next. I know I don't.

https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2017/10 ... edown.html

Oh, and I messed up. Pique did not quit the national team, he said after Russia 2018 he will resign. He worked out with the team today, and fans booed and jeered him with banners.

eta: another good link. A straightforward description of the events yesterday. Biased, but Pepe Escobar has a ton of credibility with me over the last several years. (I agree with his bias in this instance.). And you think I am wordy, he writes long but this isn't too bad. He mentions, and I acknowledge that the Catalan govt are not angels; lots of corruption in recent years, but they seem to me to be endeavoring to be an instrument of the will of the people. Escobar and AsianTimes, the English language website out of Hong Kong, are excellent.

The future of the EU at stake in Catalonia

Advanced voting for the Calgary municipal election started today.
They have drive-thru voting stations and a vote bus that will be in different areas throughout the day

Trying to find one near my work so i can just walk there instead of finding my exact polling station.

Perhaps not so popular?

In a semi-related vein, Toronto's sensible and decent mayor John Tory was at my synagogue for Rosh Hashana services. He stuck around until the idiot Rabbi's sermon. (2 hours).

Apparently, Rob;s slimier older brother Doug Ford who is running against Tory in NEXT year's election dropped by the week earlier to the synagogue for a 5 minute photo op and left before services.

Trust me. If there's one thing I've learned in this shitshow of an administration, I can be president. Not like an aid or a staffer or some dude that hands paperwork to people. No. Like the literal position.

The problem is I hate politics. Loathe, detest, abominate. I'm the type of guy who knows the right way to do something and I operate in a structured environment meant to "put it on you" if you fail. I'll hold you accountable. In the same light, I hold myself accountable if I fuck up. I don't want to hijack the thread, but let's just say that captains and chief master sergeants piss me off when I'm in a position to "outrank" them.

This thread seems better to discuss things.

The reason you don't hear more people in my position giving their two cents is because it's political and we're forbidden by the UCMJ to go into it. It distracts from our mission and purpose.

But semi-anonymously on here I'm good. The Air Force is funny and full of contradictions. They want me to operate in this rigid construct where I have to follow rules (even nonsensical ones like "You can't put your hands in your pockets because it looks unprofessional.") but yet they want me to be as highly educated as possible and distinguish myself as a leader and mentor. Well what happens when you get educated? You ask questions and start realizing there are better ways to do things and and better ways to lead. And what happens when you bring those ways to the forefront and tell your chain of command? "Shut up and color, Tech Sergeant." Then you get labeled "a complainer" and "difficult to work with."

So I get it. Every commander's call and chance to congregate together in an environment amongst my peers I get the "NCOs are the backbone of the Air Force" and "NCOs are the technical experts performing the mission" but then we get shut down by higher ups. Trying to be that guy is micromanaged bullshit. When some dude outranks me and tells me that what I'm doing is wrong, I find that what we say in public is just lip service.

Plus, all the leadership courses have the "Strength in Diversity" mantra plastered all across it. But yet...look at our elected leaders. Hate gays. Hate trans. Hate non white. Hate non Christians. And place women a rung below men. So I'm just supposed to pretend the shit doesn't exist? My airman is from Puerto Rico and another co-worker is transitioning female to male. I'm just supposed to act like the world isn't against them?

This kneeling for the flag bullshit makes me chuckle. Civilians (that probably never served) are getting enraged on my behalf. The same cohort that likes to play the "libtards are special snowflakes that are easily triggered and need a safe space" card. Hilarity. The lack of self awareness is staggering. I wish I could speak out. And let's say I was in some situation where I'm being interviewed and made comments. I'm in trouble on some cop out "you will never make political statements in uniform" bullshit. Not even the content of my statement would make a splash. The technicality would.

And, for the record, I avoid the Star Spangled Banner at retreat and Reveille in the morning with everything I can. Stay inside my car. Duck into a building. Leave base before it happens. Everything. Also, I don't even go to the base movie theater. The anthem is played before the movie, FFS! When the music plays on base, you stop everything you're doing, face the music/flag and salute. Seeing that shit in public before sporting events? Ugggghhh. Get the fuck out of here. I don't need it.

I like the kneeling. It's a "Fuck you" to these "patriots" who "thoughts and prayers" themselves into existence. The VA is fucked and our elected leaders don't plan to help fix it? Nary a peep. Dude with a fro kneels during an anthem? FUCK YOU, DARKIE. WAY TO DISRESPECT THE TROOPS AND 'MURICA. Even though it's a hollow victory, I'll take it.

I've thought about it. I'm not a writer, but neither is Snooky from the Jersey Shore and she wrote a book.

I'll second this. It has been a great experience reading your insights on military life, venting about the stereotypical military guy, and hearing a rational argument against it. As much as your one FB buddy drove me nuts, I actually miss peeking in at the arguments that used to play out on your FB feed. It was encouraging to see other military members with views outside of the stereotype, willing to have a discussion.

The MSM doesn't want anything but people hatewatching their bullshit product because they have advertisements to force on you. The military hates the media just as much as it does politicians.

So no surprise but Bernie Sanders lied again. After running for president as a "Democrat" he said he would run in subsequent elections as a Democrat as well. Now says he's run as independent again in 2018.

Good to see that the DNC has already identified its scapegoat for when it fails to re-take the House in 2018. FWIW, the DNC removed a whole bunch of Sanders allies from leadership positions last week, so I can't say this is surprising. Sanders is the most popular national politician in America and yet the Democrats would still rather maintain the status quo -- and keep losing elections -- instead of embracing his ideas.
