Swamper vs. Swamper - when alma maters meet

Post by brian »

Thought maybe we'd take some of the random trash talk when our various favorite college football teams play to its own omnibus thread instead of gumming up the main football thread.

This week that means Syracuse vs. CMU and the Chippewas are taking no chances that more than 25,000 people show up this week:

https://twitter.com/kullen_logsdon/stat ... 0351709184

I was somewhat surprised that the line in this game opened at Cuse -10 though I think that's the correct line. Was hoping there would be an overreaction to last week's games and this might be under the touchdown key number. As it is, I still like Syracuse by two or three touchdowns because Central has always struggled with the BG/FalconFast/Babers spread offense.

Averaging a couple people shy of 30K this year, but there was a lot of speculation that there was more like 20K on Saturday.

I wish I was as confident in Syracuse as you are. Offensive line is terrible, but defense is improved over last year (although it would be hard for them not to be).

Maybe we'll win those tickets from the ice cream company... and, more importantly, the ice cream-related prizes that go with it.

I certainly root for Colorado State against Colorado. But, I root for both schools otherwise. For instance, we'll all root for the Buffaloes against the dreaded Texas State Bobcats this weekend, right? We all feel that way, right, Giff? Right, TT?

That's so weird to me. Not sure how you can actually root for your rival. My attitude towards Western Michigan is withering distain at best (though I admit I was rooting for them a bit against USC, but only because the legions of USC bandwagon fans in Las Vegas are assholes.

A) They are the only two major universities in the state.
B) They have never been in the same conference.
C) They only started playing each other several years ago.
D) I am a proud native of the state and CU has always been more nationally prominent, so they've been the primary representative of the state.
E) I primarily rooted for Colorado until I actually started attending Colorado State.

Could have given you free tickets!

CU plays UNC (Northern Colorado) this weekend. Wife's alma mater, and one of two Colorado schools to win a National Championship.

Wife's aunt and about 15 members of her family all went to CSU. We have a friendly rivalry, there is against CU, mine is from my UNM days. Sadly, we can't hate on the Mormons anymore so its the damn hicks from all the Ag schools.

Had I only known... I'm still very cautiously optimistic about Maryland. I can't root against Towson though, I live close enough to hear the band play at the stadium on game days.

One of two things...due to our stellar post-secondary education we're either:

1) so smart and rich that we've already retired to a life of luxury

or

2) so stupid, unskilled and lazy that we're unemployed

Either way, what else are we going to do other than read/post on an internet message board?

I thought there was a third as well...was it bengal?

Sorry Brian...I almost felt bad for CMU today. The inability to execute when it mattered was frustrating even for me to watch. The penalty at the end of the half nullifying the FG miss return was a back breaker as well...and truly a great play. Saved me from hating the Miami coaching staff two weeks in a row for boneheaded play calls.

Yeah this is a frustrating CMU team. I have to blame the coaching. You can tell they have the talent to be a contender in the MAC but they can't get out of their own way.

Oh no. You refused to engage. Cause your team is "bad". Fornhe record I fully expect U.K. To lose. If they do not I fully expect to be as gobsmacked as one would expect after 30 straight losses.

MD needs another 2 years of Durkin recruiting to be competent. I don't think people understand how thin they are across the board. They make a few 4 star splashes, but overall they are still "loaded" with 2* and weak 3*.

They will get there, eventually. I have talked about it a lot. They are sitting in a hot part of the country, but they are still mostly off the radar of "national" level recruits.

The thin comment hit home with the injury to Hill. Couldn't do anything on offense the rest of the game. No word on Hill until tomorrow, but that didn't look good. Now down to the 3rd (or 4th if you count injured pre-season favored starter Henderson) as the Big 10 games start.

It adds up when you have an overmatched OL, your QB is going to be running for his life and bad shit happens. MD has been a QB black hole for what seems like forever now.

Shit, MI is in the 3rd year of Harbaugh and the OL is STILL suffering from Hoke's shitty recruiting at the end. The OL is going to be the thing that keeps MI from being a great team. Their D is at least as good as last year's wrecking crew. If they've found a competent QB in O'Korn, the OL is what's going to cost them games against PSU, Wiscy and/or OSU.

If Hill is out, next week's Big Ten opener against Minnesota would mark the fourth time in six years -- and third year in a row -- that Maryland’s started at least three different quarterbacks in a season.

So the Terps are are starting Max Bortenschalger (Sophomore who started one game last year against Nebraska has the 2nd longest TD pass in MD History)

Behind him they still have:
Caleb Henderson (from Northern VA and a UNC Transfer. Really nice pedigree in high school, #10 QB in the nation, #5 overall player in Virginia)
Legend Brumbaugh (Alabama kid whose Dad is on the coaching staff--Freshmen)
Ryan Brand (Kid from Detroit who started his career at Air Force. Came via Community College to Maryland

However, a few years ago they went with one of their Running Backs after some injuries instead of going deep in the depth chart.

W&L host Wash U of St. Louis this Saturday. Go Generals!

W&L Game Notes wrote:Washington University of St. Louis holds a 14-7 lead in the all-time series, which began during the 1939 season. The two teams, who used to be conference foes, have not met since 1988 when W&L claimed a 17-13 win in St. Louis. The Generals have taken each of the last two meetings and carry a 2-6 all-time record against the Bears in Lexington.
