Name My Son's Soccer Team

Post by The Sybian »

I am coaching my son's team with my friend and neighbor, whose son is also on the team. We have to come up with our own team name. My son wants to go with "The Squids," but I have to pass on that. No idea where he came up with that. My suggestion of "Little Thierry Henrys" didn't fly, either. The other guy is a big Redbulls fan, so I thought that'd tie it all together. He suggested Gunners, but i thought some parents may not like it, what with the guns and all. So, have at it. There are no sponsors, as it is the Police Activity League, but I would accept sponsorship and give naming rights to Reynold's Nap.

Our league names the teams, so my kids have never had a choice. One team did manage to request a name change though and they picked one a lot of kids were jealous of -The Ninjas.

I thought that was a pretty cool name.
Totally Kafkaesque

The one serious answer I could come up with: The Strikers

And now for the jokes...

The Shropshire Slashers

White Punks on Dope

The Sharknados

Kickin' Balls
Orange Whip? Orange Whip? Three Orange Whips!

We always let the girls pick their own team name. They changed it every season. Typically the names were boring.

However one year they came up with The Sardines. Now that was unique. At the end of year party they posed in their bathing suits like sardines packed in a can, head to toe. Someone got a photo from a second floor window. Hilarious. I wear my Sardines shirt with pride to this day.

Coaching my 5 year old this year and the sponsor name sucked (Concord Township, really?). Our color is purple so I thought something regal. Monarchs came up and they all were like "Yeah!" so we are named for a butterfly. I think we are the only team with an actual nickname and not going by the team color. Yeah, we are awesome.

In the league my daughter plays in, the teams are named after countries with the uniforms corresponding to flag colours.

Most of the teams are sponsored, so the sponsor's name is on the uni as well. Te fun part is when you get the schedule and see games like "Triple Star Logistics vs. Portugal"
"beautiful, with an exotic-yet-familiar facial structure and an arresting gaze."

I was a soccer brat growing up. In high school after enough of us started driving we gave up on having a coach for one of our teams. One dad would stand on the sideline (or bench for indoor) and we ran our own team (with lots of success). Anyway, the team name and jerseys were some of the best conversations we had. Basically it was always decided by the person who entered the in the league and bought the jerseys.

My favorites
F.C. Roosters
F.C. Kransics (which we told the league meant "soccers" in sweedish...but was just a made up word one of our friends used for nut shots...."He kicked him right in the Kransics). That was a pretty stylish Adidas kit, that I still wear on occasion.

The Dominators.

Either that or "The Accidents". Make those kids feel special. Our first practice is next week. We're starting some strange developmental program that I don't understand yet. No set teams and players rotate by ability groups.

No love for Little Sybs?

America, america.. i no longer know you.

not to threadjack...

i'm coaching my son's team as well -- town has two leagues, rec and travel. Rec is probably where he belongs right now, but their organization is such a mess I just couldn't sign him up in there (he played K and 1 in rec) -- travel.. still a mess but more organized. Had to get a license.. so did the course and now hold an F license(whohoo!.. meh, nbd)

what a mess NJ soccer it is - the guy running the license class is the director of coaching for NJ Youth soccer..he was pretty good and seemed to know his stuff(except for the goalkeeping, there i had him beat).. turns out what he spouses and teaches.. goes against NJ Youth Soccer, and certainly against what the local travel club directs its coaches to do...
the club is run by non-soccer parents.. very catty atmosphere.. seemed to focus more on the prestige(!!) rather than the substance. flashy uniforms, bags, academy coaches 2xweek to help the parent coaches.. and if your kid happens to be really good and gets into one of the academys (copa, redbull, dst)... and you take your kid out of the club... you'll get shunned..
so why did i join? get in and start making noise! troublemaker i am!

at least the parents are cool so far -- we played one friendly so far and got creamed and the parents were cool. no yelling or anything. four game tourney this weekend. At least it wont prevent me from watching the Washington Football Team or the Colombia WCQ today (qualify with a win with 3 games to go) vs. Ecuador game today. .and no Arse this weekend.. so i'm good.

oh yeah.. the question.. our team was named by the club. Fury. What a joke. the other U8 team was given the good name - Gunners.. plus they think we're the 'b' team (yeah, well, once you get all 2nd graders acting their age, and no prodigies.. i get it)

how about the BR Forest FC?

jeebus.. is this even soccer? wtf? this is the tournament scoring rules this weekend...mind you, they will not keep standings for U8, because "..its not results oriented..." (sure, tell the kids winning doesn't matter) but they will award points... what is this, gymnastics?
2 points for a win
1 point for a tie
1 point for a Shut Out
1 point for a Goal Differential (Up to 4)
0 points for a loss.
1 points for A Goal Differential of Great than 6

Concord Township is awesome. Just pretend it's English and to from there.

The politics are crazy. Many of the better kids left our county wide program to join other travel teams. They spend at least 2 hours round trip to go play an hour long game. Did I mention this is U7? We don't even have goalies.

So is everyone a coach in here? No license yet, but I may need to get one for U8.
