The Senate Tax bill is significantly different than the House bill, so there is some big politicking ahead of us yet, but both are going to hurt us badly in California.

Either way, we are looking at elimination of the deduction for state and local taxes (a big deal in a high tax state), and either elimination of the property tax deduction or limitation on the mortgage interest deduction (a big deal in a state with high housing prices and, again, high local taxes.)

Would be lovely if there were some “states rights” recourse to wipe out giver/taker states and balance everyone.

Failing NY Times article, with link to how every Member voted. Out of every District with a Republican Rep in the entire country, my District will be hurt the most by losing the State tax deduction. Yay! My rep voted against it, but I think this has to hurt him come reelection. Most people will know the GOP tax plan cost them an average of over $21,000 in state and local tax deductions, but they probably won't care that he voted against it. I hope. He is such a fuckuing weasel, and we actually have some solid contenders seeking to challenge him.

Trump going in on Franken is potentially good if the Dems and/or Franken do the right thing.

Speaking of random politics... Lesbian, who is married to a black woman, just flipped a state senate seat in OK. In a district Trump won by 40 points.

4 seats have flipped in the Okie state this year.

You know - they stick to that summation in all campaign literature in 2018, and the Democrats clean up. A copywriters' dream slogan!

I don't want too many stories like this coming out. The Dems best bet is to keep their voters scared that if they don't show up, they won't win.

Conyers is not a surprise to most people in the Detroit area. His personal life is a disaster. Plus he was a dottering old man in 1993 when he spoke at my high school baccalaureate. He’s way past the point where he should have retired.

His district is solidly democratic so the party doesn’t have much to lose by cutting ties with him.

Yeah, I would have been more surprised if he wasn't shady. On top of this, I'd bet my life savings he probably takes bribes and stuff like that too.

His wife was convicted of taking bribes while on the city council. There have long been rumors about Conyers being dirty. As you've said, City Hall is a cesspool. I find it really hard to believe he's not caught up in that in some way.

He's gonna win. He was always going to win. Question is if he's seated. This could blow back on the GOP big time come next November.

Another lesson in this is that Republicans will always vote for the GOP candidate, no matter how awful he is. And it is utterly pointless for Democrats to seek to court support from "reasonable Republicans," because that group simply does not exist in any significant magnitude. The focus in 2018 and beyond needs to be on voter mobilization and fighting GOP suppression efforts. Any notion that Republican voters will abandon Trump in any meaningful way is a pipe dream.

That's true, but remember all the predictions that the GOP was committing a nationwide, down-ballot electoral suicide by nominating Trump? Alabama or not, the fact that GOP voters would rather vote for a serial predator than a well-respected Democrat is telling.

I agree with that for the most part, but I don't think you can extrapolate this race to the entire nation no more than it was fair to do it for the special elections for the House in Georgia or Montana.

Moore is a reprehensible candidate for a bevy of reasons, but he's still running about 15 to maybe even 20 points shy of what a "normal" GOP candidate should look like in a state like Alabama, which tracks to how Democrats have performed in other special elections since January. There's obviously a lot of energy and momentum moving towards the left, but they have to pick and choose their battles as far as the national "platform".

I think they should be focusing more on populist ideas like a higher minimum wage, health care reform including Medicaid For All and destroying the GOP tax plan (whether it passes or not) and even marijuana legalization. Trump and the Republicans will try to get them to take the bait on abortion, LGBTQ rights, immigration, etc but those battles have already been won for the most part (though not immigration) even if they try to chip away at them and drag it back into the debate.

A consistent and unified message from the party would be nice and it would be even better if someone would take the mantle to say -- "this is what we're fighting for" and not even mentioning Trump's name except when absolutely necessary. I think that would resonate with a lot of the people who for whatever reason do go back and forth between the Democrats and GOP.

Having lived in Louisiana around the exact type of Republican that would vote for Moore, it really isn't -- to me anyway. Just be a Republican and you are "better" than any Democrat.

I honestly thought that it would take a child pedophilia type of scandal to create enough shame to force resignation for Trump (and thereby and Republican). Completely wrong.

I'll have to push that to cannibalism. And when I'm proven wrong there, it'll be cannibalism post pedophilia. And at the point I give up.
