In the video above, I think the Byrds were then using Eight Miles High as a vehicle for extended instrumental jamming, rather than playing it in their '3 to 5 minute pop hit' mode (which you can see in earlier videos). This may be an edited fragment of an even longer jam.

Below are some more performances of the all-to-brief Clarence White era of the Byrds, the year after the 1970 Fillmore East show. The first venue is The Beat Club, a tremendous West German TV show of the sixties and early seventies. Two sessions are represented -- in 1971 and 1972. The second is a Belgian concert from the same time as the first Beat Club session.

Two things stand out to me. First, Clarence White is playing some sweet licks that sound like he's got a pedal steel guitar in his hands. If you look carefully, you can hear string bends that coincide with downward movement of the neck. That's the just-invented -- by drummer Gene Parsons -- "B bender." The B string is being stretched by a mechanism Parsons installed in the hollowed-out back of the Tele, actuated by a lever on the guitar body that is moved by the shoulder strap when the neck is pushed down slightly. White is using this to do string bends that cannot be done manually. For example, while playing a chord. The effect is stupendous. I think I've discussed Gene Parsons before here; we lived in the same part of rural Northern California (Mendocino County) in the '70s. Remarkable musician, remarkable man.

Second, has there ever been a more versatile band than this group? The can play straight-up rock and roll in either the brief verse-chorus-verse 'radio hit' mode or the extended Coltrane-influenced jam. And they can play straight-up bluegrass, with drummer Gene Parsons switching to the banjo and Clarence White showing the chops that made him the nations top bluegrass guitarist prior to joining the Byrds. Incredible band. It's my favorite American rock group of all time -- and this is my favorite Byrds personnel grouping.

West Germany, 1971 & 1972

Belgium, 1971.

Here's the audio only from a Byrds concert in late 1971. This clip has the advantage of making it easy to jump to specific songs in their set list.

I will never in my life hear enough versions of Chestnut Mare. Interesting to know that McGuinn's co-author on this song was a psychoanalyst. This is a great version, featuring Clarence White going crazy with the B bender behind McGuinn. White is great on the sublime studio recording of this song. But a live venue allows him to go farther out on his limb. This is White at his best, merging his purist bluegrass roots with his new-found rock and roll influences.

Aesthetic tastes in musicianship are only that. But while I love Hendrix and Clapton, I love Clarence White's playing just a little bit more.

I look out my bay window sipping coffee this morning and notice the lawn has a series of rabbit holes to either fill in or explore.

I think I’ll choose the latter.

Many, many thanks, DC!

That’s some good swamp right there!

One thing I miss about getting older (wife, kids, often my mother-in-law watching "Ellen" in the next room) is that I don;t often get the chance to get ripped and put on old-time party music.

Old Story Editor of mine who lives in Burbank was neighbours of Lux and Poison Ivy. Sadly, his best story involves seeing Lux Interior taking in his garbage cans.

I'm currently loving a posthumous Ian Dury release called "Ten More Turnips From The Tip."

This is the best album of his I've ever heard.

Since we aren't doing the draft thing anymore, I can go back to posting videos of old music here. I don't know why this popped into my head. The Runaways doing their cover of a fun Slade song. Teenage SCK definitely had a thing for Joan Jett and Lita Ford.

Funny how many famous guitarists have similar names - Alvin Lee, Albert Lee, Albert King, Freddie King, B.B. King...

Not that far removed from slavery/sharecropping. No "proper" surnames so they took, or were given, the name of their former owner or the landowner.

I'm currently listening to Fleetwood Mac's first album, Fleetwood Mac. I've heard before about how their earlier stuff was much different. And man, what a great blues album. There's no way anyone unfamiliar with this would identify it as Fleetwood Mac. Completely different band.

Nice.
The Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac was a great blues band, though largely forgotten now. And, the second iteration, the Bob Welch-era Fleetwood Mac brought some nice pop to mix in along with the blues. Of course the third iteration, after Buckingham and Nicks joined, is all most people know ever existed. And, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie were there for all three versions of the band.

For the benefit of those who might care - the first video below is my favorite Peter Green era FM tune, "Oh Well". The second video is my favorite Bob Welch-era FM tune, "Hypnotized".

Rolling Stone Magazine's Scathing Review of "Led Zeppelin I"
“Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” alternates between prissy Robert Plant’s howled vocals fronting an acoustic guitar and driving choruses of the band running down a four-chord progression while John Bonham smashes his cymbals on every beat. The song is very dull in places (especially on the vocal passages), very redundant, and certainly not worth the six-and-a-half minutes the Zeppelin gives it.

This guy's great. Check out this review of Neil Young's Harvest. It may be the most pretentious writing I've ever seen.

This is a single sentence!
While some respond to commercial prosperity as a means to realizing all those brainstorms that a lack of loot formerly made impossible, to expanding and growing as an artist through the exploitation to heretofore unattainable resources, others either wilt artistically in the face of a mass audience’s expectations — resorting to conscious imitations of what was once instinctive and spontaneous — or greatly relax the standards by which they once judged themselves, having concluded (usually quite correctly) that once one attains superstar status the audience will eagerly gobble up whatever half-assed baloney he pleases to record.

DVR alert. Tomorrow morning at 5:15 am EST, TCM is airing an old documentary about Lightnin’ Hopkins. I have never seen this film so I have no idea if it’s any good. But it sounds like something worth taking a chance on.
