Watching the Leafs game, and my god is SN exponentially better than NBCSN between periods.

Millbury is equally horrible, and Jones doesn't add much either.

Luckily/strikethrough Millbury is in the booth (for at least as long as Olczyk is out).

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
Tappen is the only redeemable part about NBC broadcasts at this point. Get her, Kevin Weekes, and Darren Pang on a broadcast together and I'm in. I also don't mind Liam McHugh, but Tappen needs more recognition for what she brings to the table.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2018 8:08 am Millbury is equally horrible, and Jones doesn't add much either.

I somehow didn't realize until they mentioned last night that the earliest NYR's season has ended with Henrik was during a Game 82 shootout. That's pretty insane. And this is definitely the right move.
(Actually issuing a release either means they think the fans are a little more attached to Nash/Grabner than we are OR that McDonagh and/or Zuccarello are on their way out at in the next few weeks.)

There's been a lot of McDonagh talk around here. To be fair, their was a lot of Karlsson talk around here during All Star Weekend as well. Do I want McDonagh on the Bolts? What do you think it will take to get him?

That letter looks and sounds like the one I receive from the Sharks right before they announce a ticket price increase for the upcoming season.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
Oh absolutely. The dude plays like a 3 zone, 1st pair D despite AV heavily skewing his usage AND saddling him with Girardi and Holden over the last 5 years or whatever. The cost should probably be higher than you can pay competing with other logical choices unless you do something really painful to your NHL level roster. This trade is going to singularly define both Gorton's (already shaky) tenure and the shape of the rebuild.
Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
At least half the teams in the league need a guy like McDonagh, so his price might get bid up (if he is on the block).
Thornton and Nash are buddies, so people discuss whether he would be a fit with the Sharks. I say no, because the one thing they have plenty of is wingers. We need a playmaking center and a top-4 defenseman.

Nash is going to be so good for someone in the playoffs assuming they use him middle six and as a PK specialist. I'm assuming we'll pay down his deal too so he fits anywhere and returns more.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
I'm a little bit skiddish on the potential of repairing Girardi with McDonagh. I don't want 2015-2017 Girardi, I want the Bolts version who isn't heavily relied upon. I'd think one of Johnson, Gourde, or Point would be required in return, and I'm not so sure I want to let any of those three go. That being said, we've got a ton of F depth in Syracuse. Can I interest you in an Alex Killorn and Andrej Sustr? I'll buy their plane tickets for them.mister d wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2018 1:58 pm Oh absolutely. I can assure you that if Johnson or Gourde is the headline in a Ryan Fucking McDonagh deal, I will lose my goddamn shit.
(My best case scenario is Winnipeg sees a window and decides its worth it to flip Trouba for McDonagh to get healthy for the stretch/playoffs.)

Johnson's no trade kicks in come July. Both he and Killorn got way too many years on their deals this offseason. Both TJ and AK have been streaky. How about you take Johnson, Killorn and Sustr? I'll throw that music party we've been discussing.

In Reno and kind of excited for the Vegas/San Jose game. Going to a bar to watch and I’m told these parts are basically split 50/50 between the two teams these days.

Frustrating first period. Sharks outshoot Vegas 16-3, but it's 1-1 after one. Fleury looks sharp.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
Well, shots on goal flipped and favored Vegas in the 2nd, but it's still tied - 2-2, now. 3rd period should be great.

That first period was about as bad as Vegas has played all year. But if you shoot at the king, you best not miss.

And yeah. Sharks played well. I knew Vegas was good when opposing fans leaving T-Mobile would start saying their team played well and still got beat.

Maybe this will be the case where noted scumbag Dustin Brown gets adequate punishment. It didn't happen on the recent incident with Justin Schultz. It didn't happen in previous knee-on-knees with Michael Roszival and Tomas Hertl. Hearing upcoming with Player Safety spinning wheel o'justice.

I was looking around the innerwebs and stumbled upon an old Reddit thread discussing "underrated cheap shot artists". Basically, focusing on good players who give a lot of cheap shots, but for various reasons (usually because they are talented) they don't get lumped in with the usual suspects. Sure, enough, Mr. D's favorite guy, Shane Doan was mentioned. As were guys like James Neal, Jamie Benn, Gabe Landeskog (all of whom wore "C" or "A"). Can't really argue with any of those.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
Poor Todd McLellan has to get fired. Edmonton has so much talent but has been such a huge underachiever this season. Losing Sekera hurt, and Talbot's been bad. But, they've got so many good forwards that I don't get their poor performance.
I hope the Sharks get Patrick Maroon at the deadline. They don't need wingers, but they really do need a talented big guy with a mean streak. I'm not a fan of that kind of hockey, but it was discouraging to see the fucking Coyotes take so many liberties with them on Saturday, with no pushback. It'll only get worse in the playoffs.

I will win my bet with Oilers fan in the office ($10 per point) for the 9th out of 10 years. Last year was an outlier.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
Bad as they are, the Oilers are still the only Pacific Division team to have beaten Vegas this year. Vegas is 13-0-0 against everyone else in the division and 1-1-1 against Edmonton.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
As good as the Knights have been, keep in mind that playoff history is littered with great teams that lost a short series against a big underdog. The year the Sharks won the President's Trophy, they lost in the second round. But, twice they've won playoff series' as a #8 seed.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
Yeah, I know how the playoffs work. But getting a Pacific Division tomato can in the second round (if Vegas can get by what will likely be a wildcard team from the Central in the first round) will help.
I still don't think Vegas will get home-ice in the Western Conference but I'd take the two seed in a heartbeat even if it means drawing a team like Saint Louis in the first round.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
That's not a dig on San Jose necessarily. They're probably the second-best team in the division (maybe Anaheim if they get their shit together -- which doesn't look likely at this point), but it's just not a good division this year. That's one of the reasons Vegas is winning it going away. Getting 29 points from 16 games from one division with almost half of the division games yet to play. Put Vegas in the Central and they're probably hanging two or three points above the wildcard line like Saint Louis.

Re: 2017-2018 NHL Regular Season
Almost as surprising (to me) as Vegas' record against the Pacific is San Jose's. Take away the 0-2 versus Vegas and the Sharks are 15-2-3 against the Pacific (including Saturday's loss to Arizona!)

Butthurt Brian upset his adopted team got toasted at home. I feel bad I didn’t catch this one sooner, though I did see a similar note in the other thread.
