This one is for Pruitt and Degen (and Scotty, if you're lurking). Could've put it in the Most Canadian thread, or the Facebook thread, but I'll just drop it here, to show you that right-wing posts on Facebook by old relatives aren't limited to Americans. This comes from a post by my father's cousin's wife, in Saskatchewan.

Well, the following things are being done - anthem (a movement to make it gender-neutral), some refugees have been temporarily placed in hotels (obviously, NOT the Four Seasons), one terrorist (as defined by the Americans who stuck him in Guantamo) was paid a legal settlement because " the Supreme Court of Canada had ruled that the Canadian government's interrogation of Omar Khadr at Guantanamo Bay "offend[ed] the most basic Canadian standards [of] the treatment of detained youth suspects".
Abortion is still legal here and Trudeau came under fire for vacations - but not for spending "millions" on them. He spent time on the private island of the Aga Khan who does business with the government.
The other stuff - debt, taxes are more due to incompetence than maliciousness. The rest is - as you'd figure - complete and utter nonsense. Like most countries we have or share of right-wing religious zealots. Luckily, they are still on the margins and haven't yet succeeded in fucking things up.
Hatred of the name "Trudeau" is firmly entrenched in the west. I'm not a big fan of the guy, but Sharia law is not on the horizon.

It wasn't until my sister moved to D.C. and I'd drive through the western part of the state that I began to fear the place. All I can say is that I would never do that drive after dark.

I remember part of a road trip driving through PA. It was gorgeous. Trees everywhere. Pretty sure it was this very long toll road. Now that I think about it, it was the closest to what driving the autobahn in some parts of Germany was like.

We drive from Reading to Pittsburgh about once a month to visit our daughter and her family in Pittsburgh; It is an easy and really pretty drive at anythime of the year. It makes you realize how heavily forested PA is.
We also drive once a month to visit our other daughter in Newton MA. That drive is more tedious, more difficult and significantly less scenic

You need to drive on the turnpike some more. It sucks. Not as much as I80, but it's close. Dangerously narrow at times and way too expensive. I think it's around $10 billion in debt with an annual budget of $500 million. Almost 10 straight years of raising tools. US 30(Lincoln highway) runs parallel most of the length. It's much slower, but more scenic.

Trudeau is in more trouble. He and the Justice Minister tweeted that a jury came to the wrong verdict. They are politicizing the verdict. They wanted a sacrifice more than a verdict.

I followed the case over the last few weeks and the prosecution's case was very poor and the testimony of the other 4 people in the car kept changing. I don't think the jury could have reached any other verdict.

The temptation is to make this into Canada's Michael Brown case - you're right, but there were inconsistencies on both sides of the trial, my feeling is that the prosecutors did a really bad job. In my mind, Stanley should have been found guilty of manslaughter at least.degenerasian wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2018 11:15 am

To me the witnesses were not reliable. They admitted on the stand, under oath, to lying in police statements and lying under oath at the preliminary hearing. Not to mention the stories changing, or the admission that they were drunk.
On the other side, a loaded gun is a loaded gun and pointing it anywhere is negligence .
But the onus is on the Crown and they never could make a case.

Re: Random Politics
You'd think of all people, Israelis would be leery of embracing right-wing fascist governments but guess Bibi is naive enough to think Trump's racist buddies won't come for the Jews next time.

Re: Random Politics
It is a lot more complicated than that. Obama was very unpopular in Israel. He was perceived as being not supportive and of course he and Bibi didn't exactly hit it off. OTOH, Bibi made a huge mistake by allowing the Israeli issue in the US to become politicized. In the past suport of Israel (for good reasons) has always been widely bipartisan, but Bibi was so opposed to the Iran nuclear deal that he accepted a Republican invitation to speak to congress against. A mistake on both sides. The US still voted for the treaty (despite Bibi's urging them not to) and most Jews voted D in 2016 ( the R's thought that by being so supportive of Bibi that the Jewish vote would go R. It didn't.
Politics is different in Israel, and government policies in Israel are considerably left of ours. The Rs here would not be comfortable with the right wing in Israel. They would be considered far to liberal (that is how bad we are here).
Trump did agree to move the embassy. That is huge. It still amzes me that Israel is the only country that isn't allowed to choose the location of their own capital in the eyes of the world.
Re: Random Politics
I legitimately do appreciate that background and in fact already knew some of it, but I think my overall point still stands despite being (admittedly) overly simplistic.
Lots of people who are very close to Trump would very much like to see every Jew in the world killed, even if they don't admit it in polite company. And Trump himself doesn't really seem to have an issue with those people and those groups.
For this fact alone you'd think that associating himself with Trump would be political suicide, but that doesn't necessarily appear to be the case.

Israel was built by secular/reform/conservative Jews, but it is being dragged down by the Haredim.
Spend a couple of hours with some really, really orthodox Jews and you'll understand. These guys think liberal Jews are just slightly better than Polish men in uniforms. Honestly - burn the entire world down, as long as Israel is still letting them read Talmud all day, they don't care.
And of course, a lot of these guys would never dream of serving in the military or starting businesses or doing any of the things that has helped Israel to survive and even thrive. Netanyahu is their boy - doesn't even wear a yarmulke, but he panders to these guys like a pro.

The hard-core Evangelicals love Israel because once all of the Jews move back there, than Jesus can return and the rapture can begin. Either the Jews convert and take part in the great times to come, or they get incinerated - that part is secondary.
So at the root of it, their love of Israel is part of an effort to rid the world of Jews.

Yup. As crazy as this sounds, many American Evangelicals are hard core Israel supporters because they literally view the establishment of Israel as a necessary prelude to Armageddon and the rapture.Pruitt wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2018 6:23 pmThe hard-core Evangelicals love Israel because once all of the Jews move back there, than Jesus can return and the rapture can begin.
