Just commented on Brian's facebook post about a Mountain Goats song (No Children). I've become sort of infatuated with them recently. A lot of their lyrics are similar emotionally to NMH, IMO.

If you are just getting into the Mountain Goats, check out the 'I Only Listen To The Mountain Goats' Podcast. John Darnelle and the guy who does the 'Welcome To The Night Vale' break down each song on the first Mountain Goats album, with another artist joining them and doing a cover version. Its great.

Smashing Pumpkins is on my Mt. Rushmore of "Wait, how do you like (names 5 bands) and not like (them)???"

I kind of figured I'd get mixed reviews for picking them because:

a) Like Nirvana, 2 or 3 of their songs got played the fuck out by FM radio.
b) Corgin is a fucking dick.
c) I feel like there a couple of other bands I won't name for reasons that got a bunch of shit for "going mainstream" or whatever, so the hipster of the day shit on them. I don't give a fuck about that stuff, so I'm picking all those bands if they're still on the board.

But, yeah, that album in particular is ridiculously good.

Redefining the term, power trio, Ben Folds, Robert Sledge & Darren Jessee drop bombs of wit throughout the LP, and while the disc is fucking full of fantastic take-aways that resonate with several archetypes at the party, the opening track (One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solemn Faces) is about a guy whose success in life is cause for a good comeuppance at those laughed at him in school (you know, instead of coming back to kill everybody).

Oh, you FUCKER! Dammit.

Understood. I think the Mountain Goats and this Neutral Milk group are similar. If you don't want nasally, often-monotone style that drifts into some caterwauling, you're not gonna sit through an album.

I debated Pet Sounds internally, but looked back at the track listing and at some of their others and decided I like the beach boys greatest hits more than any single album (duh). Some real forgettable songs, but overall a band I still like to listen to, kind of like how I couldn't pick a Clapton album.

Have to look at when it recorded. It's influence on other artists at the time, and since.

It's a concept album, it's album to sit and listen to. Neither of those really existed before.

Also, the things that Wilson did in the studio were a great leap forward in terms of using the studio as a tool in recording rather than just a place to go and play and be recorded.

Huh. The weekend I proposed to my wife*, it just so happened that this was our CD (remember those!?) of choice. We were driving around VA wine country** and blasting the Blue album and we still smile when one of the tracks off that album pops up.

* - I surprised her with a trip to a b&b in VA horse country for NYE (Middleburg for those familiar). She was so floored by the surprise nature (I packed her and everything) that she didn't see the proposal coming. Popped the question in front of fire right as the clock hit midnight, Times Square on the TV in the background.

** - Yes, there is an actual VA wine country. It's in the same basic latitude range as CA wine country with similarly humid conditions. But not the best soil and ultimately it gets too hot, so the wine is average at best.
