Re: Movies
I’ve seen that with my cousins, of whom the oldest has autism. He’s about 6 years older but until this year were in HS together because you can go in AZ until age 21. But she’s constantly being pushed aside because of her brothers needs. Fortunately she’s a great kid and loves her brother to death. But it has an impact. I was heartened to see how awesome all kids are (by and large) with special needs kids. It’s nothing like when we went to school. In a lot of ways this country is on the right track.

Re: Movies
We finally watched 'Get Out'. What a great movie, on a whole bunch of levels.
And there's no way in hell its going to win Best Picture.

Yet to see Lady Bird or Shape of Water, but Get Out would be a richly deserving winner of Best Original Screenplay. That script is air tight.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Thu Mar 01, 2018 12:23 am We finally watched 'Get Out'. What a great movie, on a whole bunch of levels.

Re: Movies
I hope Shape of Water doesn't win that category just because there's a chance it's plagiarized. Get Out would be my pick in that one. I was underwhelmed by Lady BIrd, but I think that's because I've lived that movie the past few months.

Re: Movies
Normally, I dismiss these plagiarism cries. But in this particular case, it sounds like there's something to it.
And there's a Canadian version of Lady Bird showing nightly at my house.

Re: Movies
Yeah, I wanted to be happy that Abe Sapien was getting work again, but it sure seems too similar to warrant a "original screenplay" nod, let alone a win. For the unintiated, here is The Ringer's rundown of the case.

Re: Movies
I thought Lady Bird was excellent, but I've seen that movie (or close to it) before. I've never seen anything quite like Get Out before. Closest we could come up with was a 'Woke Shaun of the Dead'.
Re: Movies
And I thought Get Out was basically like every horror movie ever (with an admittedly great twist).

Re: Movies
Horror is an inaccurate word. Let me revise that to "thriller".
Either way, I'm not shitting on Get Out. It was a very good movie. I don't think it was in the top 10 best movies of last year though.

Re: Movies
I should say that I didn't have the best viewing experience...it took an hour to watch the first 11 minutes due to a friend of the wife who is becoming a source of constant drama so the woman was constantly checking her phone.

Drew Magary in Deadspin wrote:Here is yet another disposable Tom Brokaw wet dream, featuring white journalists in bad pants saving the world from all the Bad People by doing some Good, Old Fashioned Shoe Leather Journalism. The DVD of this movie includes a commentary from Aaron Sorkin where he freebases coke and then screams “WHERE ARE TODAY’S EDWARD R. MURROWS?!” at the top of his lungs. I wouldn’t watch this even if you told me the Trump pee tape was hidden inside it.

One of the other contestants waiting to appear on "Jeopardy!" was a young writer who had a crew job on Sorkin's The Newsroom. Sounds like he's a complete lunatic and a total asshole to his staff.
FWIW.

Re: Movies
That's a good question.
Saw Baby Driver last night. Good fun. And while there's no point in expecting anything vaguely realistic from such a mental film...

I’ll probably never see The Shape Of Water so Oscar-wise last year might as well never have happened.

Re: Movies
Was that 1 the Lord of the Rings?
I've seen 6 of the last 20. But that was 5 out of 6 from 1998-2003, plus The King's Speech. And Lord of the Rings is probably the only one I saw before the award was given (or in a theater).
I think I've seen every one of the winners from the 1990s except the English Patient, though almost all on video.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I've not seen 7 of the winners since 1950 counting Shape of Water which I haven't seen yet
i think the worst one I saw was Dances with Wolves. Absolute snub to Goodfellas (i think they were the same year)

Re: Movies
That one doesn't bug me as much as Crash. I'm no Dances With Wolves fanboi and Goodfellas is definitely better, but DWW is at least a very, very good film in my opinion. Crash is just garbage (though the other candidates that year weren't that great. Brokeback Mountain should have won though.)
ETA: If we're going to get into the weeds, DWW has a pretty horrible script and Costner is not a good actor, but it's a gorgeous movie and that counts for something.

Don't even get me fucking started on Crash. Fucking garbage.
So I'm at 54 total. Oldest I saw was All Quiet On the Western Front (1930), most recent was Moonlight (2016)
By decade:
30s: 3
40s: 2
50s: 7
60s: 5
70s: 9 (all but KvsK)
80s: 6
90s: 9 (all but DWW in one sitting)
00s: 10
10s: Only 3, but there are mitigating factors there.
My longest streak is 20 (Silence of the Lambs to The King's Speech), second longest is 10 (Midnight Cowboy to The Deer Hunter).
And Steve, don't waste your time on The English Patient. Go spend those three hours refinishing your deck.
