Swamp Photography

Post by Scottie »

That is to say, our own photos. Too often, photos taken by the lads get lost in Random Images or "At the . . . " threads. So post your pics!

These are nine quickies from the enormous "International" Night Market in Vancouver last night. And by "International" they mean "Chinese". Not so easy to shoot at night (I never use flash) with the Sony CyberShot I brought along but a few turned out alrightish. Wasn't up for lugging the bigger gear around. And those Sony's take a worthy snap.

1. The night market is much, much, bigger than it used to be. And far more crowded. It's also annoyingly brighter. The lighting on each vendor's stall is now just glaring. They switched the booths to some sort of planet friendly bulb that has the consequence of blinding anyone who looks directly at one. And the crowds this year have been huge. There's also loudspeakers on the streetlight poles (far right upper corner on pic below) that are turned up to distortion level so everything sounds just like a street market in Beijing or the ceaseless propaganda one hears at the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas. And there's fifty of them all torturing different announcements or pop music at the same time.

Image

2. Typical vendor. Although sellers of cell phone covers, those rubber things with cutesy images, are omnipresent; three bucks per. This is a knock-off jewelry vendor. She also has a booth that sells knock-offs of Hermes and Louis Vuitton purses which (authentically) run hundreds if not thousands of dollars; she sells them for $40.

Image

3. Knock-offs. Sock-offs. Who wouldn't want Gangnam Style socks? Or, better yet, Shin Ramyun socks (Upper right corner). Those are ten pairs for eight bucks. Pretty cheap when you consider that they were made somewhere in Taiwan or mainland China, sold, put on a container ship, crossed the Pacific, sold again, sold again to whoever that vendor bought it from, ended up at a market for eighty-cents per pair. What a world.

4. Food. The food court takes up about half of the space at night market. It is massive. The smells are incredible. Squid on a stick? You betcha. Anything and everything on a stick. Cup'o'octopus? Yup. Every type of quickie Chinese food imaginable. Kimchee pancakes. Bubble tea. Roasted corn. Deep fried anything. Dukk. Duck. Fish-flavoured ice cream. Various unidentifiable street market staples. Grilled fish, whole, ungutted. Spit roasted mystery beast. Ramen gelato. Red hot spicy pepper soda.

Image

5. More . . .

Image

6. Steamed pork buns in the shape of piggies and porcupines. Clever, eh.

7. The loneliness of the Pokemon-costumed, Ren & Stimpy knock-off purse wearing, soap-bubble gun wielding sales girl.

Image

8. Making "Dragon's Beard" candy apparently takes years and years to learn. I can see why; it is certainly delicate looking stuff, thinner than silk or angel-hair. Then powdered, dyed, and shaped into some fascinating edible art.

Those are cool. My best shots would all be family. I don't do a lot of shooting the surroundings.

I bet PDX would have some nice sumbissions.

Thanks guys. As per AB, I usually just end up taking pictures if my kids, and in this case was trying to get the camera set to get a shot of them leaning against the railing there in the foreground.

This is a shot of my son climbing on playground equipment right by the London Eye. (hope it's not too huge)

Like others, I normally just use my phone and take shots of the family, so it's rare to take a "good" picture.

Cheating a little bit, because he's not a swamper, but good friend of Oiler and I, James Boone, had a few of his weather shots retweeted around the webs a bit in the last few weeks. It was strange to see Erin Andrews and a Washington political reporter retweet a good friend's work.

The lightening shots are really cool.

Ferris wheels are cool, huh? I tried taking some shots like Shirley managed to nail, with the wheel blocking the sun. As you can tell from the picture above, the wheel is West-ish from the boardwalk, but it was too far away to entirely block the sun.

Walked around Vancouver's Chinatown for a couple of hours this afternoon; it was a gorgeous Autumn day. Took a few shots with a tiny little Sony Cyber-Shot (14.1 megapixel) just to play around with the camera. Here's a dozen of 'em:

Thanks. I got very, very, lucky on that shot for a couple of reasons. One is the guy sitting bottom center as if he just finished painting the mural or was posing for an album cover and second, which is almost unthinkably rare for bustling Chinatown, there was nobody else around thanks to the holiday.

Here's a few shots from the Vancouver International Buddhist Temple, a remarkable (and lavish) temple down in Richmond, BC, from a couple of days ago. It was done up for Chinese New Year:

I did earn this one. I rolled out of bed a little after 5AM, biked down the boardwalk to the primary route out of town, and ran over the bridge connecting the island to the mainland (and back, about 5 miles total). There was a great view of Atlantic City to the right/East, but it was a little overcast in that direction and I couldn't get a great shot right at sunrise. I rode the bike back down to the beach, took a quick swim waiting for the sun to climb above the clouds, and got a couple of pictures once it did.
