New Order: Power, Corruption & Lies
My copy of that disc has ‘Blue Monday’ on it (most do not), which was essentially the track that let everybody know the direction Hook / Sumner were taking them after the demise of Joy Division (Curtis’ suicide). The rest of the disc still contains shades of the post punk gloom Joy Division was known for.
Of course, the best track on that disc is ‘Age of Consent’.
Covered by many an artist: notably by Built to Spill here:
Oh and here’s a version of them covering the same song that makes me realize I’ve never truly had a great time at a pub before. Holy hell that looks like a great fucking time

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick - ENOCHROOT (228th)
That was on my list. I wondered about them being the remnants of a band that has already been chosen.
A great album, but truly one of the absolute worst concerts I have ever seen. Maybe an off night, but there were 5,000 pissed off New Order fns that night in Toronto.

Fuck. For the past couple rounds, I've had almost a dozen that I prefer in different orders on different days so I've been trying to pick unique relative to my existing group versus risk of someone taking.
Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick - ENOCHROOT (228th)
I mean, I dunno if there was a particular incident or reason that night in Toronto, but I find that bands that rely on a heavily synthesized sound come off largely stale on stage. Case in point: MGMT.Pruitt wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 11:10 am That was on my list. I wondered about them being the remnants of a band that has already been chosen.

No energy. Shitty venue and they were off stage within an hour. No encores requested. I mean, we were out at a hall by the airport and the drugs had barely started working.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 11:47 amI mean, I dunno if there was a particular incident or reason that night in Toronto, but I find that bands that rely on a heavily synthesized sound come off largely stale on stage. Yeah. That’s gotta hurt. Seems like a band like New Order needs to be experienced with a string of similar artists at a festival or some type of rave. Madchester scene type stuff.Pruitt wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 11:52 amNo energy. Shitty venue and they were off stage within an hour. No encores requested. Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick - GIFF (230th)
wikipedia is the best
The album's themes are partying ("Nothin' But A Good Time" and "Your Mama Don't Dance"), lost innocence ("Back to the Rocking Horse" and "Fallen Angel"), lost love ("Every Rose Has Its Thorn"), anti-social behavior ("Bad to Be Good") and sex ("Love on the Rocks", "Good Love", "Tearin' Down the Walls", and "Look but You Can't Touch").
Vocalist Bret Michaels allegedly wrote the band's most successful single, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", in response to a failed love affair with a Los Angeles stripper. Poison had been playing at a cowboy bar called The Ritz in Dallas, Texas. After the show, Michaels called the woman at her apartment and heard a man's voice in the background. Heartbroken, he wrote the song with an acoustic guitar in a laundromat.

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick - GIFF (230th)
So many albums to choose from. This one stands out because not only does it have a whole bunch of great songs, but unlike every other Fall album, there isn't a single horrible experimental "song" or something that sounds like it was recorded in the back room of a pub at 4 am.
Loved this band.

The eponymous first album of the Pretenders was going to be my next choice. Great album. Love me some Chrissie Hynde. And, since Ryan didn't post the cover:

Other than Rush, there's probably no one here who's heard of this guy. Only one album that I've been able to find (the only other thing I've seen repackages a few of the songs on this album), but it is a monster!

Is that the "Shout Out Loud" album? That's a pretty great song to have randomly come on places.

It isn’t. But you are correct. This one is my favorite by a hair but all his stuff is so good.

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick - PRUITT (237th)
There's no doubt in my mind that the Talking Heads' Remain in Light has its roots in African funk like that. Curious if Pino met up with Ginger Baker when he did his trek across the African continent playing music where he could in the early 70s..

Not with Pino, but with the King of African music (who cited Pino as an influence).

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick - GIFF (239th)
According to Disccogs, he's only released 3 albums. Boogie Fever, Let's Have A Party, and Soco Soul Live. (Heavy, Heavy, Heavy is a compilation)
Lots of EPs and singles, which is par for the course for "World Music" in the 70s.
ETA He's sort of the Desmond Dekker of Africa. Influenced the guy that everyone has heard of. (Though a few more frat bros know Marley than Fela.)

(I need to check, but this is atleast the third album you've picked where I'd take the artist but only if I could shift it one, if not two, backwards. Weird trend.)

Wow. That’s one hell of an album. I would’ve thought with all those hits it was a Best Of.
But fuck the song Don’t Walk Away, Renee.
