The Athletic wrote:“I’m not on their medical team, so I couldn’t tell you,” Trotz responded. “All I say is I saw the hit. Both guys braced for it. Shoulder-on-shoulder, and I don’t know the extent of (the injury). So I don’t think I should comment on it.”

Aston-Reese wasn’t able to comment either, because his jaw was broken.

Some explain to me Pens Nation's thoughts on Wilson running another one of your guys in consecutive games.

FWIW, the first one we were talking about a few days ago I thought was kind of an unfortunate hockey play but they guy involved has history and that makes it more visible. This one he should be done for the rest of the year. Can't have this crap in this sport anymore.

The guys I was listening on the radio said this was a clean hit and kept going back to saying it was clean. When I look at it, I don't know. I just can't tell what is a clean hit in this league. But you start to wonder why Wilson is always involved. Is it because he is 6'4" and that is above average height in the NHL? Is he dirty? Does he make more contact than others? If is is suspended that will be a big deal for the Caps.

Also go to the bottom of this link for a good view of the hit...but notice the official during the hit. He did not see it (Linesman I think).

I've got no dog in this fight as far as Pens/Caps go -- but that's not a clean hit in any way shape or form. That's intent to injure.

Sullivan's (stated) philosophy has been to not retaliate. Effectively, winning is the best revenge. Hard to argue with that during the last two seasons. Might be harder to take if they end up on the losing side of a series against Wilson, and could get ugly if the true hot-heads on the team (71 & 58) have no reason to keep themselves under control. The NHL is dumb sometimes.

It's dumb all around. I've read some reaction on blogs and /r/hockey and it's all "well if he had been suspended, this wouldn't have happened". That ex-post-facto shit drives me nuts. Wilson isn't going to change his behavior if you suspend him for a game so that's a non issue. But I don't have an answer either. I understand he's a big guy but you don't see Zedeno Chara running guys like this.

Yeah, probably that. Like how Brian Boyle drills a dude in the head pretty much every third shirt because he's even taller. C'mon.

Also, Tom Wilson will get one (1) game for his second headshot of the series and breaking a dude's jaw. And the only reason he'll get that is because Ovechkin scored to put the Caps up in the series.

No excuse for it, he needs at least one game for that hit.

That's the exact kind of hit I've been talking about. He needs to figure out how to avoid that hit, period.

Rarely is a guy such a perpetual shithead that you can say "if he'd been suspended like he should have, this injury wouldn't have happened" and not be speaking to behavior modification. He literally shouldn't have been allowed to play this game, DoPS gave him another pass and now Aston-Reese has a broken jaw.

It is very fucked up, not at all surprising, but fucked up that he made that hit, given all that is going on around him.

Needs to sit down for a few games.

DoSP scheduled a hearing.

1 game is my bet, given the refs didn't put him in the box.

DOPS hearing means he's getting at least a game, so question now is how many games. (But probably 1).

This is a real situation where you could make an example out of him and fix this problem 90% of the way same day. You line a guy up like this and continue avoidable head contact through the play, it's 15 games. But we all know how serious they really are about this.

brian wrote: Tue Apr 24, 2018 10:17 am I wouldn't bet any real money on it, but just have a weird feeling it's going to somehow be the Golden Knights and Capitals in the Finals. I think I said that during the regular season thread, but going to throw it out there now just in case.

(And if that happens, it will be fun to watch the rest of America fall in love with Nate Schmidt like Washington and Vegas fans have.)
I had thought about the Nate Schmidt angle, the George McPhee angle and the difference in inaugural seasons angle* but I hadn't even considered the Bryce Harper angle

That inaugural season was historically bad. It took them about 10 years just to get into the playoffs.

It just so happened that I moved to the area right when the Langway trade (and a few other moves) really started to payoff. I'm glad I didn't have to suffer through those early years. I had enough of that shit with the Red Wings.

Bryce Harper wearing a Golden Knights jersey to a Stanley Cup Finals game in DC in the season before he leaves Washington to play for the Yankees or Cubs or Dodgers just seems like something the universe would make happen.

I know I'm not breaking any news here, but just for the record, Wilson got 3 games.

Repeat offender status surely played a role here.

I don't have any problem with it. Dude needs to figure out how to play without annihilating people in the face.

It'll be interesting to see what the league does with Rule 48 in the offseason. I just don't know if they are prepared to make such a game-altering move by (attempting to) eliminate headshots.

Hockey wants to be as fast as possible and as safe as possible with hard hitting intense action. It's not possible without some sort of damage.

Imagine if in order to speed up traffic you were forced to park your car at 30mph. Eventually you'd be able to do it but you might wreck a few cars in the process.

How many concussions is the NHL willing to accept for the product it wants?

Burns cheap shot on Carpenter was bullshit but the real punishment is going to be having to pay a guy who is already a traffic cone on defense $8M a year for six more years.
