Re: Getting the spins
"Swim Until You Can't See Land"
I salute at the threshold of the North Sea of my mind
And I nod to the boredom that drove me here to face the tide
And I swim, I swim, oh swim
Dip a toe in the ocean, oh how it hardens and it numbs
The rest of me is a version of man built to collapse in crumbs
And if I hadn't come now to the coast to disappear
I may have died in a landslide of rocks and hopes and fears
So I swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Are you a man? Are you a bag of sand?
Swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Are you a man? Are you a bag of sand?
Up to my knees now
Do I wade? Do I dive?
The sea has seen my like before, though it's my first and perhaps last time
Let's call me a baptist, call this a drowning of the past
She is there on the shoreline throwing stones at my back
So I swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Are you a man? Are you a bag of sand?
Swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Are you a man? Are you a bag of sand?
And the water is taller than me
And the land is a marker line
All I have is a body adrift in water, salt and sky
So I swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Swim until you can't see land
Are you a man? Are you a bag of sand?
Swim until you can't see land

Re: Getting the spins
I don't think I had really comprehended how many of their songs are about death and suicide.
It was dawn and the kitchen light was still on
I stepped in, found the suicide asleep on the floor
An open mouth screams and makes no sound
Apart from the ring of the tinnitus of silence
You had your ear to the ground
White noise
I don't know if there's breathing or not
Butterflied arms tell me that this one has flown
Blood seems black against the skin of your porcelain back
A still life is the last I will see of you
A painting of a panic attack
He died in his sleep last night
He died in his sleep last night
He died in his sleep last night
He died in his sleep last night
You died in his sleep last night
You died in his sleep last night
You died in his sleep last night
You died in his sleep last night
You died in his sleep last night
You died in his sleep last night
Death dreams you don't forget
It's been a while since I dreamed this but
Even now, when asleep, I'll tread with care
Death dreams you don't forget

Even now, when asleep, I'll tread with care

Re: Getting the spins
I love that song so much. I'm certainly predisposed to like anything that has Aaron Dessner's touch on it, but this is such a great album opener. I hadn't known much of Frightened Rabbit at all before seeing them at Shaky Knees 2 or 3 years ago. They were fantastic live, and I ended up standing next to most of the band while (pretty sure neither Hutchison brother was there, and certainly not Scott) watching At the Drive In's headlining set. I don't think anyone else recognized them. That album really worked its way into my personal heavy listening rotation since then.

Re: Getting the spins
I really don’t mean to sound indifferent, however, while I appreciate depressive lyrics to be woebegone in nature, there’s got to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Or else you’ll wake up one day to find your hero exited this world on his own terms, leaving you high and dry.
Maybe that’s what Warren Zevon did. Who knows.
I just know he managed to write hist angst into songs while smiling out the other side of his mouth.

Confirmed as him, found at Port Edgar in the Forth. This is incredibly sad, and my heart goes out to his family and friends.

Hard to listen to, to be honest. Especially hearing the "This is Scott, from Frightened Rabbit..." station id bumper. Just so sad...mister d wrote: ↑Fri May 11, 2018 8:04 am Just like whenever this happens, www.kexp.org is probably going to get through it better than anyone else.

Re: Getting the spins
Went back last night and read the lyrics to a few songs. Reading them on the page is such a different experience to listening to him sing them. Perhaps its the upbeat nature of the music that belies the darkness of the lyrics, but man is it much harder to read them.
There's something innately detached when hearing lyrics sung. There are so many amazing songwriters that take artistic liberty, and talk about things that are metaphors or exaggerations of their feelings. It's almost like everyone else is crying wolf.
It's probably a bit too on the nose to make this comparison, but rereading Scott's lyrics reminds me a lot of how I felt after hearing about Elliott Smith's suicide. Like, it was all there all along, and this shouldn't be a surprise. Still, fuck me, this hurts, and sucks.

New Lucero album announced for August 3rd. The first two songs can be heard here.
Suppose I should find something life-affirmingly poetic in one of my favorite bands ending while another one keeps moving forward, but I'm not there yet.

Can't let this go unmentioned, so yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Robert Pollard's no-hitter for Wright State.

My ex-wife had a friend that evidently hooked up with him back in the day. I recall a story of him chasing the woman around with his hand coated in Crisco.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: Getting the spins
I know this isn't the style of a lot of you guys, but it is a new song and video that I think is great. Dave Alvin was the lead guitarist for a cool old band called The Blasters, and Jimmy Dale Gilmore did a bunch of solo albums and was in The Flatlanders with Joe Ely. (Jimmy Dale Gilmore also known in movie trivia circles for his role as "Smokey" in The Big Lebowski.)

Still listening (watching really, because the videos are so great) the Tobe Nwigwe album. I also really like the new Courtney Barnett. The riff that starts "Charity" slays me.

Listening to the Nick Offerman's Shop Music Spotify playlist. How come none of you sat me down and forced me to listen to John Prine? "In Spite of Ourselves", "Sweet Revenge", "Clay Pigeons", "That's the Way the World Goes Round", and "Paradise" are on here, and they're all great, especially "In Spite of Ourselves".

Man, John Prine has tons of great songs, including some you've mentioned there. Also, some other favorites of mine are Illegal Smile, Pretty Good, Dear Abby, Grandpa was a Carpenter, Hello in there, Donald & Lydia...govmentchedda wrote: ↑Fri Jun 01, 2018 3:54 pm Listening to the Nick Offerman's Shop Music Spotify playlist. Re: Getting the spins
I love In Spite Of Ourselves, but I can't play it anymore, at least not in earshot of the wife. She heard it on a CD that I made back in the day for the previous Mrs. Rush (though I think she may have listened to it once.)
A friend gave me a copy of John Prine Live and his ST debut back in college. I wore those babies out. Suprised that HDO's love of Prine (and Scottie's hatred) made you give at least a tertiary listen back in swamp 3 or 4.
ETA Iris Demente (the duet on In Spite) is pretty great in her own right, but the twang can keep you from binging.
