Damn, that’s how you respond to getting CONCACAF’d
Re: World Cup 2018 --Pre and Group Stages
That’s the real root of it I think—they’re in competition with Telemundo in a World Cup without the USA in it. I suppose they are trying to win the niche market of second and later generation Mexican-Americans who primarily speak English.degenerasian wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 11:07 am Does FOX cheering for Mexico even a money making strategy? I would disown my non-existent Mexican son if he watched a World cup game on FOX.

Re: World Cup 2018 --Pre and Group Stages
Yeah, Telemundo is pretty ubiquitous even in middle America, but there are still places in the US for Mexican natives where Fox would be their own real option. Of course, that doesn't apply to the places where viewership is going to be the highest (anywhere within 300 miles of the Mexican border, NY, Chicago, Philly, Miami, etc.)

These guys don't do ANYTHING that isn't built around trying to broaden the audience. There are millions of Mexican Americans, many of whom pull for the US and MEX, many of them that speak English as their first language. In fact, one of the guys on my team here at work is from California, parents are from MEX. He pulls for both teams and is in Russia right now. He would've seen both teams play, if the US didn't shit the bed. (He planned on going long ago.)degenerasian wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 11:07 am Does FOX cheering for Mexico even a money making strategy? There are ZERO Mexican fans watching the world cup on FOX. This is what ppl in my generation and older struggle to understand. The US team has been CONCACAF good for so long, many of the kids of immigrant families cheer for them as much, or more, than they do their parents origin country.
(I was talking about this potential future over on Bigsoccer in the late 90s. Back then, it wasn't a given the US would get this "good" or that MLS would survive.)

Anyways, watched chunks of this PAN -BEL game... I hope Panama comes out the next game flying around, knock off this bunker bullshit.
God, I hate the bunker. When you put ZERO pressure on the other team, particularly when your formation dictates that you never have a real forward option... What's the fucking point? And even after Belgium scored, they were still sitting back.
Not until 60 minutes are gone did they start trying to press and push guys forward. Came up with a few good chances. They have some talent. Play the fucking game.

Just realized I'm going to be in Thailand for the World Cup Final and the start time there will be a very perfect 10 p.m.

I'll be in Ko Samui by then, but I'm sure it shouldn't be too much trouble finding a place to watch the game.
ETA: Though honestly that is helpful since I'll be in Bangkok for the semifinal games.

And the way Switzerland was kicking the ball around in the back made me start to think that soccer needs a half-court rule.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 9:04 amYeah, I don't understand people dismissing ANY European team that got to the WC. But the Swiss have proven over time to be an extremely tough out. To be fair, though, Brazil were very dangerous and unlucky not to be up by 2 or 3 goals by the time the Swiss scored.Pruitt wrote: ↑Sun Jun 17, 2018 4:17 pmI have historical reasons for rarely cheering for Germany.
But more seriously, I realize most of you guys hate the Mexican team, but that was an incredible, dare I use a bogus cliche?, inspirational performance.
The feed of the Brazil-Switzerland game here featured an English announcer who spent the time up until the Swiss goal basically slobbering over the great Brazilians. And while they looked really strong for the first half hour, if their offence is going to run through Neymar and Neymar alone, when he is that easy to defend - I mean, he goes down easier than (insert prostitution related punchline here).
The Swiss are clearly pretty good, and really well coached.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I am in Orlando and can’t find the regular fox channel so I am using telemundo exclusively. It’s kind of fun.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

If Queen Elizabeth dies in the next week, would England be the first country to play two different national anthems during one World Cup?

Subbing your goal keeper in the 14th minute while being down 1-0 seems less than ideal.

SBI has some interesting nuggets
1.) I think Croatia is being diplomatic with Kalinic going home
2.) William (Denmark) hopes to return to cup.....after two broken ribs and a punctured lung
3.) Lucas Hernandez admits to faking injuries...Even thought it is part of soccer, I hope he does not get a call the rest of the tournament.

Watching soccer in Spanish is always more exciting. I think it's because they have so many extra syllables to get in that they have to talk so much faster.
I watched my first World Cup entirely in Spanish, on a Chicago UHF station in 1982.

Re: World Cup 2018 --Pre and Group Stages
It's never the players' fault, of course. The English media doesn't help at all and most North American media thinks that because England has the "best"* domestic league the national team should be a World Cup contender every cycle when in reality the best English players can't compete with the best from other countries like Spain, France, etc. **
* - Best being subjective but really it's hard to argue with the attendance, viewership and TV contract figures.
** - The UK giving up most of its colonial possessions before many of its European neighbors didn't help w/r/t the ascendancy of French soccer (and to a lesser extent some other countries like Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Holland) either. The real lesson is that maybe England should have had more colonies in Africa.

Interestingly, my wife's Dad, a lifelong Canadian, vehemently agrees. Probably one reason he didn't *completely* lose his mind when we first met. ;-)

They're certainly not doing their part to produce world-class talent for England like Mali is for France and Cape Verde for Portugal.ImaginaryMan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 2:18 pmAs far as I'm concerned, I still live in a Crown colony. ;-)brian wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 2:16 pm ** - The UK giving up most of its colonial possessions before many of its European neighbors didn't help w/r/t the ascendancy of French soccer (and to a lesser extent some other countries like Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Holland) either. Curious decision for that Tunisian player who was trying to waste time to dribble the ball past the backline since England have only been really dangerous on set pieces.

Re: World Cup 2018 --Pre and Group Stages
As soon as the US failed to qualify, Fox went with a strategy of making Mexico a second favorite team for US fans, in hopes that we would latch on to Mexico as a rooting interest and watch the World Cup. I didn't see it, but Lalas was supposed to do a special on the Mexican team introducing the players and back stories in hope casual fans watched. I don't think this strategy worked, at least I didn't see any of it, and haven't heard anyone discuss rooting for Mexico.
I was surprised to find myself rooting for Mexico. I feel like the US/Mexico rivalry isn't what it used to be. I hated Mexico (in a soccer sense) throughout the 90s and early 2000s. They always destroyed us in the 1990s, and had huge homefield advantages when playing in US stadiums. Seeing 90% Mexican crowds in games played in the US pissed me off, mostly that US Soccer preferred the money grab of packing a huge stadium in California, rather than making less money, playing in Columbus, and giving the team an advantage. The Mexican players used to play dirty and play to injure. I hated just about every individual player on those teams, except Jorge Campos. He was awesome. Once we started beating Mexico and playing in front of pro-US crowds at home, the rivalry started to fade. They don't have a single player I hate as an individual, and the violence and rivalry feeling doesn't seem to be there for the players, either. Fans at the Azteca can fuck themselves, though. Throwing bags of urine, batteries and coins at players is inexcusable. I still haven't gotten over the Osama bin Laden cheers Mexican fans would do in the years after 9/11. That was a line too far.

Re: World Cup 2018 --Pre and Group Stages
As you all know, I love Harry Kane, but other than his two goals, he was defended amazingly. However, that is a big "but." Spurs fans are used to seeing him roam all over the place. Weird to see him playing like a typical striker. Sterling should have had much more of an impact.
Trippier played well, Ashley Young, Stones, Maguire all solid. Deli was - as he usually is - hot and cold.
England looked mediocre for most of the second half, but Tunisia defended well. They aren't a bad team. AND that ref was abysmal. Harry Kane was tackled in the box, and nothing.
A late win was ultimately deserved however and the England team could do some damage in this tournament, but Rashford should be in there instead of Sterling who seemed pretty much helpless against tight defending.
And I have to respectfully disagree with NLFC - Panama is not good at all. I'd wager that they go home without a point.

You touched on it, but not all the way home so... That team that lost to the US in Columbus were a bunch of cunts. They were presiding over what is now a given in CONCACAF... America's rise to the 1b in terms of dominance in the region. And they were embarrassed about it, so they got even more cunty. The highlight of this behavior was when they literally tried to kill Cobi Jones at the tail end of the most humiliating of the Dos-a-Cero losses in Korea. The Sybian wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 4:11 pmAs soon as the US failed to qualify, Fox went with a strategy of making Mexico a second favorite team for US fans, in hopes that we would latch on to Mexico as a rooting interest and watch the World Cup. Since that time, the arrogance and shitty demeanor has faded. They still expect to beat us... sort of. The dominance is a relic, and they know it. They've accepted the new reality and this batch of players just doesn't act like a bunch of assholes on the field at all times. Not saying they aren't assholes, but God, that iteration from the 90s were so bad... Constantly diving and the refs giving them calls. Tons of elbows and shitty behavior off the ball.
They are still our bitter rivals, and I highly doubt their fans would cheer for us on any level. But it's nowhere near the same level of animosity coming from US fans down their way. It would be almost impossible to match how much we hated them back then.

That was a crazy second goal. Player waved onto the field and straight into a breakaway. It seemed odd.
