2018 NHL Offseason

Post by degenerasian »

Sharks have reportedly signed Evander Kane to a 7 year deal at $7M/AVV

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/eva ... -1.4673923

This also means the Sabres gets the Sharks first round pick in 2019. The pick is lottery protected.

At least he’s still relatively young but seems like they have a lot of money to dole out to young guys in the next couple of years and not an insane amount of cap space to spend. If this deal means they have to let a guy like Hertl walk in a couple years then I hate it.

Seems like this is the starting point for contracts where the next amnesty is in mind. Evander Kane is the new Brad Richards.

I like the deal. Kane was a clear difference-maker for the team when he was healthy. He brings a few different things that the Sharks needed. One expensive stud is worth the risk and provides way more benefit than four cheap pluggers. And I really doubt he is Brad Richards (although I understand your dislike for big free agent signings, given the really poor results of Sathers’ signings.)

Right now San Jose has ample cap room.Thornton and Vlasic both make a lot of coin and won’t be around that much longer, so that will offset future contract needs to some degree. In Doug Wilson I trust.

To be clear, I meant Brad Richards like "the contract wouldn't have been signed without a future escape clause", not Brad Richards like "will produce at a 59 points over 82 games pace before being bought out".

Threadjack - speaking of Richards and the Rangers, I just read Sean Avery’s autobiography. It’s clear he loves two things: A) himself, and B) his time as a Ranger. (He says he is big buds with Richards.)

Does this mean they let one of Pavelski or Couture walk after their deals are up next year? Because by my count they've got $22M/yr tied up in three guys through the second Trump administration (Burns, Vlasic and Kane), but presumably Pavelski and/or Couture are going to expect to continue to get paid at that same level as those guys (they are now) and that's before you start paying some of the younger guys who are going to deserve decent money deals like Meier and Hertl (you could throw Donskoi in that group, but personally I'm not a huge fan and letting him walk maybe isn't the end of the world).

(In case it's not obvious, I'm not criticizing the Kane deal on its own merits as much as I am that it seems to not give Wilson a lot of options once he finishes paying some of the younger guys on the team in line for raises. There's enough money for all of that, but nothing else and nothing else for a few years it would seem. He's basically pushing his chips all-in on Evander Kane, for better or worse.)

I think it is worth the risk. Kane improves the team significantly, well beyond goals and assists, because I think he makes other guys better with his capabilities, talent and style of play. Of course they are screwed if he goes in the tank, but I don't expect that! I'd be shocked if they let Pavelski or Couture walk - those are key guys. Based on his history, I'll bet Doug Wilson will find a way.

That is insane. Pretty damned unlikely Karlsson would even consider staying in Ottawa. (Unless Hoffman shot his girlfriend to the moon, and even then maybe only if Hoffman also is traded.)

I assume this isn't anything that Ottawa's front office didn't already know, which makes it even more insane. Not sure how you can justify keeping Hoffman and any leverage it might have had to try and move Hoffman (or even to a lesser extent, Karlsson) is gone.

So, this story is like a car wreck that I cannot stop myself from watching.

No players are talking, aside from Karlsson and Hoffman each supporting their wife/girlfriend side of the story. But, I think some comments, and more comments by wives of former Ottawa players are enlightening.
“Oh man, if you only knew how unsurprising this actually is,” wrote Marlee Hammond, wife of former Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond, who was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in November. “Horrible just horrible. And the worst part of this is how she just wanted to keep this private because she’s THAT nice of a person even when a person can be this cruel to her.”
After the reports of the protective order spread Tuesday, Kodette LaBarbera, wife of former goaltender Jason LaBarbera, tweeted: “Her fixation with Mel has always been unhealthy. Then it became scary. So glad Mel is protecting herself. No team will welcome this girl to the room.”
Those commenting included included Julie Turris, the wife of forward Kyle Turris, who was traded to the Nashville Predators by the Senators last November.

“This crossed the line from cyber bullying to something entirely different in April,” Julie Turris wrote on Twitter. “Unfortunate that this private matter has become public. Incredibly proud of my girl for standing up for herself and her family, it took courage.”

I get why, talent wise, this is a mess. But I also kinda wonder if in 2021 Galchenyuk will be moving to his 4th team and still carrying his rep on talent.

(So, I’d be mad, but in no way Hall for Larsson mad or anything like that.)

Lots of guys gonna be coaching this season with the Sword of Damocles hanging over their head in the form of Trotz. Unless he really wants to take a year off, he'll be back coaching someone by the New Year.

Saw on Russian Machine Never Breaks that he had an extension that kicked in for 2 years if he won the cup. So he was technically under contract, but that was below market value. Lots of conversation about him not being happy with his assistant Todd Reirden (who the caps would not let interview with other teams). Have also Trotz has a great relationship with Minnesota's GM.

If you just piece together everything from twitter today, its very plausible Ottawa's entire offseason will be built around finishing like 24th instead of 30th so the pick they lose to Colorado next year is lower than the 4th they could turn over this year. Disaster franchise.

So dumb. Just give Colorado the pick this year in a weak draft.

I've read exactly zero reports of this being a weak draft. I'd get still giving up #4 because that could be #1 next year, but not because this draft doesn't have talent.

(Also, you wonder if a good GM could get a little back from Colorado here. 4th overall is huge value, so would they send a 3rd or something back to assure its not 2019's 10th overall and get someone in the system now? Sakic probably has about as much security as any GM, but good GMs fuck up that calc all the time anyway.)

I wouldn't call it a weak draft, but from people who follow it, I've heard 2019 and especially 2020 are supposed to be better. So maybe just by comparison better to lose the pick now even if it's 4th overall.

It's a strong draft year for Europeans and defensemen. Weak for North American forwards. The 2019 draft looks to be the opposite.

In most mock drafts Ottawa is taking Evan Bouchard, the London Knight defenseman. So unless they really like him, they should give the pick to Colorado and tank for Hughes.

Gawd, I'm glad the Sharks don't have Hoffman. Don't want that stink on a team I root for. Boedker isn't as good as Hoffman but he had a solid bounce-back season for San Jose and was good in the playoffs. But, he was bad the year before and he is overpaid, so effectively trading him for draft picks is some of that cap relief the Sharks need. Wouldn't be surprised now to see them take a run at Kovalchuk (who has already been in town for a visit with the brass) or maybe even Tavares. Got to figure out how to keep room to sign Couture and Pavelski, though.
