Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Judge does seem genuinely good, to the point where I read an article about him revamping his swing and saying something to coaches like "if you aren't going to work with me, get the fuck out of here" and I was glad he had it in him. But he's also goddamn huge and plays the OF on the relative reckless side, so there's a ton of breakdown/injury risk. I wouldn't bet on him being an all-star in 5 years, let alone 10, just because of all the things that could go wrong. Torres, on the other hand, is one of those guys who just plays the game beautifully. I haven't been this confident in a player since Correa and before him since Machado and before him since Sizemore so fuck off, everyone.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Also re: Jeter ... I wonder how exact Jeter coming up to the majors right now would play out. No one hated him because he was the platonic ideal of neutrality. That's getting harder and harder to do these days as neutrality becomes ("perceived as") a flaw.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Good point, that's the one big question with him. He strikes me as a somewhat more athletic (and early-blooming) version of Travis Hafner, in terms of skill set, and I can't help but recall the way Hafner sort of fell off eight or 10 years ago. He was still a very good hitter, but 50-60 points off his best OPS+ years.mister d wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 12:40 pm Judge does seem genuinely good, to the point where I read an article about him revamping his swing and saying something to coaches like "if you aren't going to work with me, get the fuck out of here" and I was glad he had it in him. Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Perceived as a flaw only by people who see the world through the distorting lens of present-day hypersensitive nonsense.
Jeter, Paul O'Neill, and Rock Raines are the only non-Jays players I ever really rooted for.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Judge is like half a foot taller and far more athletic than Hafner. The only comp I've seen that works more than halfway is Winfield, but even there its closer to "relative to his peers" than an actual body/skillset mirror.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Oh, Judge has a huge edge in physical tools. I think of Hafner only because he was a large-ish, .400 OBP/.300+ IsoP sort of fellow at his best, which is basically what Judge has been thus far. Of course, Judge also did that in his *rookie* season...

That one might annoy me the most. If it makes sense, Sexson was a "tall guy" whereas Judge is a large freak because he's in massive proportion.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Is "games in hand" a benefit in a sport where standings aren't based on "points"? I think it's a drawback, because it means "fewer off-days remaining."
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I dunno. Isn't it more accurate to say that the benefit is from the 2-game lead, not the games in hand?
Is a team better off with a 2-game lead and the other team having to play more games? (Does it really make a difference?)
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Either way, the Yanks are projected at about a 70% chance to the win the division. Which makes me happy, because the Sox are one of the only two teams in sports I truly hate.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Tigers fired Chris Bosio as their pitching coach after he directed "insensitive comments" at a team employee.

Or none of the above? My guess: something entirely benign that no rational person would take offense to, which was subsequently blown entirely out of proportion by one of the hypersensitive prats that seem to roam every organization nowadays.
I could certainly be wrong :). But nothing gets me to the point of rage more quickly than this sort who go out into the world looking for a reason to be offended...

Yeah they’re not going to fire a fucking pitching coach for something innoucous. Especially before it went public.ImaginaryMan wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 5:51 pmOr none of the above? Conversely, I get angered by bigots/homophobes/misogynists who excuse their own boorish behavior by blaming others and saying people are just too worried about being politically correct.ImaginaryMan wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 5:51 pmOr none of the above? I don’t have a dog in the fight. I don’t give a fuck about his performance as pitching coach which was incomplete since he just got hired. But MLB teams do not fire coaches this early for on-field reasons masqueraded as something else

Yeah, I should have explained that better. Didn't mean to sound like an insensitive ass, though I might have done. :)
As a disclaimer: I, of course, know nothing beyond the minimal information that's been reported. Also, I have never worked as an everyday employee in an organization of, well...any kind, so it is entirely possible that my position is ill-informed, completely untenable, and inconsistent with reality.
However. I am absolutely convinced that the biggest problem with society today is the drastic, drastic overuse of the phrase "I am offended." If someone is your direct superior, and makes an off-color remark intended to be derogatory to you, then of course that can't be allowed to stand. Similarly, if another person in your organization makes a comment to you that is *intended* to offend or demean, then sure. However, I detest the notion that people now can be, and regularly are, fired and raked over the coals in public, for making a remark *without* malicious intent, that gets overheard by the wrong person.
I have no specific reason for assuming the latter to be the case here, of course, except that I have a hard time imagining a major league pitching coach cornering a random club employee and laying into him. So, I guess, I really should have waited to find out if my comments were relevant to the situation before posting them, but unfortunately, my mind has no censor and my keyboard has no delete key... :)

And to sancarlos' point -- of course, I would always try my best to avoid offending anyone I have discourse with, because I am (I hope) not a horse's ass. I am just bemoaning the fact that being a horse's ass seems to be a fireable offense nowadays.

It's like that stuff in the Mavericks office where the guy didn't get fired until he like jerked off on one of his coworkers. I mean people get offended by anything these days and then it's fired time!
