The government electing to legalize weed and sell it themselves instead of just turning it over to the free market and regulating it is indeed a very Canadian thing.

Officially had it up to here with Lil' Trudeau. Run the government, stop taking gifts from rich friends who get big governmental deals and don;t hector people in one of the 5 most liberal countries on earth.

Nice!
No, she was Canada's Rosa Parks.

My daughter wondered why she wasn;t put on the $20 bill. Would have been very fitting. She bought a ticket, entered the theatre and took a seat on the main floor, unaware that tickets sold to African Canadians in this town were for the balcony and the main floor was reserved solely for White patrons. Theatre staff demanded that she go to the balcony, but she refused, since she could see better from the main floor. The police were summoned immediately and she was dragged out, which injured her hip. She was charged and held overnight in jail; she was not advised of her rights.
Maintaining her dignity, Desmond remained sitting upright, wearing her white gloves (a sign of sophistication and class at the time). The following morning, despite not having done anything wrong, she paid the imposed fine of $20. Besides being fined, she was charged with defrauding the Government of Nova Scotia of the difference in the tax between a ground floor and a balcony seat, which amounted to one cent.

This was the original short list and who she beat out.
Viola Desmond (1914-1965): A black businesswoman from Nova Scotia who famously challenged racial segregation at a film theatre in her home province.
E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913): A poet and writer whose performances reflect both English and Mohawk traditions and who is recognized as helping to shape Canadian literature.
Elizabeth (Elsie) MacGill (1905-1980): The world's first female aircraft designer. She worked as an aeronautical engineer during the Second World War.
Fanny (Bobbie) Rosenfeld (1905-1969): An Olympian who won gold in the relay race and silver in the 100 metre dash at the 1928 summer Olympics.
Idola Saint-Jean (1880-1945): A Quebec journalist, educator and feminist who fought for the women's vote in Quebec.

Man's lifetime ban rescinded after 17 years following seagull incident at the Farimont Empress hotel in 2001:

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/lifetime-ban-lift ... -1.3868384
VICTORIA - A Nova Scotia man banned from Victoria's stately Fairmont Empress hotel is welcome back after apologizing for an incident more than 17 years ago in which seagulls hungry for pepperoni trashed his room in a rock star frenzy.
Nick Burchill of Dartmouth, N.S., says in a letter to the hotel he was young and immature in 2001 and unaware of the aggressive nature of West Coast seagulls, especially when tempted with a suitcase full of fresh pepperoni near an open window.
“I remember walking down the long hall and opening the door to my room to find an entire flock of seagulls in my room,” stated Burchill's letter. “I didn't have time to count, but there must have been 40 of them and they had been in my room, eating pepperoni for a long time.”
He said he startled the gorging birds, which is when things really got out of control.

Best part of that story was that he was visiting buddies in the navy and brought them pepperoni sticks from Halifax (a local specialty). No fridge in the room so he spread them out on the table in the room and then opened the windows to keep them cool so they wouldn't go off.tennbengal wrote: ↑Tue Apr 03, 2018 8:10 am Man's lifetime ban rescinded after 17 years following seagull incident at the Farimont Empress hotel in 2001:

From the CBC story -
Complicating matters was the fact Burchill had just started his job three months earlier. His employer had booked the hotel and he needed to attend a dinner with customers. There were two seagulls left in the room and he had to get them out.
"One was just bouncing around on the windowsill and I was kind of losing my temper at this point, so I took off one of my shoes and I threw it in the direction of the seagull, and both the seagull and the shoe went out the window," he said.

Two things in about five minutes during the drive home from the in-laws' outside of Pittsburgh yesterday:
1. Passed a Great Canadian Coach yesterday, but the speed make it too difficult to figure out which great Canadians were airbrushed on the outside of the bus.
2. Passed an SUV with Ontario plates and a trailer hitch cover that was a moose.

Re: Most Canadian Thing Every
Didn't watch it, but just reading about it this morning is making my blood boil.
Premier Wynne spent the past year pushing her debt-inducing government further left fiscally than anything you could imagine, but now that she's discovered that stealing NDP-style policies has not made her more popular, she is suddenly calling the NDP "radicals," and pitching herself as a moderate, responsible middle force between the others?
No wonder people loathe her.
I will tell you, if the NDP wins a majority (which I doubt), this province is fucked. And not because their policies are unnecessary in a province where the minimum wage is going up to $15 in a few months, where prescriptions are free to those under 25 and over 65, where post-secondary education is basically free to students over 21 and where it is nicely subsidized for others...
No, we would be fucked because not a single person in that party has any experience. 1990, the NDP emerged from deep 3rd party status to win a majority (60% of the seats with 38% of the vote.) What followed was a government of such incompetence that five years later, the province whipsawed as far right as it's ever gone.
The fact that this Horwath, who is in her 3rd campaign and has never led her party to more than 24% of the vote, is being shown way in front in a couple of polls is due to the fact that she is running against parties led by people who the vast majority of voters find hard to even look at.
Also - polls are ridiculous things to follow - one of the polls getting major media play is one of those automated calls where you have to push a button to register your choices. Out of curiosity, I started taking one a few weeks ago - I tried pushing the button for the answer that wasn't "Doug Ford" and it didn't accept my choice. Back to the question!
A logical voter has to ask how she has gone from a decent second in a conservative-majority government to a dead heat and now to an NDP majority WITHIN TEN DAYS! Polls.
The night before the last provincial election, the projections based upon polling data was that the Conservatives would form a strong minority or even a majority government. The Liberals won a majority.
I am in the "wait and see" camp. And I will be disgusted if the result is anything but a bare Conservative minority. (And yes, Doug Ford makes me nauseous. That is the level of imbecility that I am watching unfold)

If cops aren't allowed to use lethal force, that just invites people to run away from them, tackle them with a human shield, attack them with a bag of trail mix, escape through the ceiling crawlspace, and god knows what else. IMO.
