Ear Hustle is a really well-done podcast I just started listening to... Co-hosted by a prisoner at San Quentin and a woman who comes in to volunteer with the inmates. All about prison life, but not in a sensationalist way... Like, the importance of having a compatible cellmate (Cellie) and what can go wrong/right in those situations. Or what it's like to go into and survive in the SHU (the hole, solitary confinement) at Pelican Bay.

I'm only 4 episodes in, but I'm looking forward to the rest.

It's sponsored and put out by PRX... The production is VERY good.

I just started and really enjoyed it the episode "Monrovia, Moldova..." I learned a hell of a lot in 45 minutes, but they are entirely conversational, and not pedantic at all.

Awkward right? I keep my Twitter private, basically using it as an RSS feed, and commenting on random swampers. He mentioned he wanted to go there when we were talking.

Scott Aukerman (from 'Comedy Bang Bang) and Adam Scott ('Parks and Rec', among other things) did a podcast called 'Are You Talking U2 to Me?' where they dissected all of U2's albums.

Now they are doing the same to REM...called 'R U Talkin' REM RE:ME?'. So far they've done Chronic Town and Murmur.

Added. I'll give it a listen today and let you know.

My experience in those countries is going to be wildly different than someone who has actually seen some shit.

But if there's any mention of intra-theater travel and the entitlement amongst redeployers demanding airlift when there isn't any, I'll let you know.

Re: Podcasts

I gave it a listen. The first episode was really rough. Dude joined the Marines to prove to his father and his family that he wasn't going to be a bum after high school. Deploys twice in his 4 years and he gets irreparably fucked up after the 2nd time. When he gets home the, he's broken and changed. Just as he's about to separate at the end of his enlistment, his mom gets cancer and dies. Later on in life another friend dies. Despite making the best out of everything in his life after the military, he has a psychotic breakdown and almost kills a girlfriend.

I mean, that shit is heavy and I cannot connect to it on any level. I've just never had to face life and death the way he had to. And going on 17 years this fall, I'm doing fine. It's callous to say, but I didn't join the Army or Marines because you're a piece of meat and they're a meat grinder.

Though the little things in his story I found some connection with. That "last cookout/hangout" with friends and family where you go away the next day and the next time you're home they've moved on, but still doing the same drinking and work, and you're living a completely different reality away and realize the connections are fading or have faded. The emotions associated with going away and coming back over and over is weird. Tough to explain, but in some way you feel like your memories, while awesome, are dead and never coming back. Nostalgia hurts.

But the main point of the podcast is fear. He dealt with it on a level I'll never have to worry about. My experiences have been mostly good. But I've never been in a serious position to almost die. And I'm in Afghanistan right now.

I found the stories of Boot Camp and War Games interesting. Also amazed how lives can turn in an instant. You think you're going to hang out in Guatemala (have an adventure and meet some women as he says) and then the boss comes in and says you're going to Iraq.

1st episode -England 1990 (Gascoigne)
2nd episode- How Soccer Made It In America
3rd episode- Zaire 74

Probably done better by another company/organization....but like the idea.

Gimlet also launched two others:

Habitat - Which is a reality-based show about 6 people that participate in a NASA-led experiment living in a geodome kind of like what they are thinking will be in place on Mars... For a YEAR! They gave each of them a recorder and got audio diaries and she fed them questions along the way. I'd recommend it with the caveat that I kind of expected more... drama? I don't know. It was interesting talking about basic logistics of living that way, in much the same way as The Martian covered the challenges of the seemingly mundane.

But it's kind of limited in terms of covering the human interaction because they are all trying so hard to be diplomatic and professional. They don't always stick to the script and the curtain is pulled back some... but not as much as you might hope.

Sandra is another of their fictional "we hope this gets picked up by Hulu" shows. And just like Homecoming, it's pretty damn good... until it starts to feel like someone is just writing an elaborate TV pilot. Premise is... pretend Alexa or Siri wasn't a computer-generated response machine, but rather each request was slotted to an individual covering a particular topic. So, right away you've got to suspend disbelief on some pretty glaring logistical issues. Kristin Wiig is the headliner and it definitely has some funny moments sprinkled throughout. Ethan Hawke is another big name.

I plowed through it and it's REALLY good when it just kind of settles into a series of kind of short story/vignettes with people asking questions that lead to endearing or just thought-provoking dialogue. It kind of goes off the rails towards the end, in my opinion. I'd give this another qualified recommendation. I enjoyed it, but it had some issues along the way.

Slate's Mike Pesca has just published a book called "Upon Further Review". The idea is what if A happened instead of B in sports.

From Amazon
o announcer ever proclaimed: "Up Rises Frazier!" "Havlicek commits the foul, trying to steal the ball!" or "The Giants Lose the Pennant, The Giants Lose The Pennant!" Such moments are indelibly etched upon the mind of every sports fan. Or rather, they would be, had they happened. Sports are notoriously games of inches, and when we conjure the thought of certain athletes - like Bill Buckner or Scott Norwood - we can't help but apply a mental tape measure to the highlight reels of our minds. Players, coaches, and of course fans, obsess on the play when they ask, "What if?" Upon Further Review is the first book to answer that question.

Upon Further Review is a book of counterfactual sporting scenarios. In its pages the reader will find expertly reported histories, where one small event is flipped on its head, and the resulting ripples are carefully documented, the likes of...

What if the U.S. Boycotted Hitler's Olympics?

What if Bobby Riggs beat Billie Jean King?

What if Bucky Dent popped out at the foot of the Green Monster?

What if Drew Bledsoe never got hurt?

Upon Further Review takes classic arguments conducted over pints in a pub and places them in the hands of dozens of writers, athletes, and historians. From turning points that every sports fan rues or celebrates, to the forgotten would-be inflection points that defined sports, Upon Further Review answers age old questions, and settles the score, even if the score bounced off the crossbar.
He has a podcast to support the book. First episode is "What if Richard Nixon was good at football". He does a good job on his Podcast the Gist and was great on Hang Up and Listen.

Love that show, and, yes, that episode is really disheartening.

I'd listened to a very similar story on another podcast... I think it was Reveal... And John Oliver just did something on it, too. Not sure what's driving this recent coverage, but I'm glad it's getting a spotlight. it's despicable.

Via recommendation from someone on Twitter, stumbled onto a podcast called 'Cocaine and Rhinestones", about the history of country music. I've only listend to one episode so far, about Ernest Tubbs and how he got pissed off at the guy who ran the Grand Ol' Opry and tried to kill him, and it was great.

I also endorse this podcast. Some are better than others (personal interest in the subject may have something to do with that). The one on Cassius Clay is excellent.
