I've never not asked for more. And almost always gotten more. If nothing else, you could ask for non-monetary perks. Extra vacation time, ability to work from home a day a week. Or maybe a signing bonus if they won't do a higher salary. The Sybian wrote:So how do you guys deal with salary offers? Do you accept the offer, try negotiate a higher salary first? Do it in writing or on the phone? I went with an e-mail, since the hiring manager extended the offer over the phone, but said that she won't be reachable until tomorrow as she is at a conference. I don't want to come off as pushy or a dick, but if there is money on the table, I think I need to at least ask. I am a bit hesitant as she already told me the offer is more than they initially budgeted for the position, but everything I read says basically that you are an idiot if you don't ask. When I said I need to crunch the numbers and asked for info on benefits, she sounded a bit surprised, but I made sure to sound enthusiastic about the offer and let her I know that I want to make this work.

Working from home is already an option, but I want to start off in an office, just to learn the business and make connections and what not. They let me choose NYC or NJ. I took NJ, but I want to work out of NYC from time to time just to meet more people. They told me most people work a day or two a week from home. I know one woman in my role works full time from home. They seem like a really laid back outfit. I will probably be travelling a lot anyways, mostly local, so working from home won't be a huge advantage.phxgators wrote: I've never not asked for more. And almost always gotten more. I'm just home from my interview with the Allen Brain Institute. Wowza....super interesting stuff going on, and really impressive group of people. Not sure what I'll do if the BackUpGenerator people offer me a full-time, permanent gig vs those guys offering me a 6 month contract position (with a possibility of it being extended).
Here's something I learned from my interview....did you know that mice can see in the UV range? I had no idea...

Re: Swamp Job Questions
I officially got hired by the Allen Brain Institute today (well, by the contracting agency to go work for them). Start work on Monday. Very excited....3 months of job hunting finally paid off.
The Power Generator people just couldn't make a decision. The recruiter was super frustrated with them, and when I called him today to tell him I was taking this other position he said he had told them that I wasn't going to be around forever, and that they were going to miss out if they didn't move more quickly. Oh well....I think this is the better fit, and I'm just going to look at the next 6 months as an audition for the Allen people. Hopefully I won't be going through all this again in 6 months.
One of the things the Allen people did though was a "social media background check". Never had one of those before.

Congrats! I bet it was the Stop being a Pussy thread, or whatever your threesome stories were in that got you the job. Social media searches is exactly why I chose a pseudonym for The swamp and very rarely post anything on Facebook. I'm also lucky to have such a common name, it is hard to find anything on me. I also do a social media search when interviewing someone or being interviewed by someone. I feel like I got a great feel for my bosses boss before she interviewed me. She posts a ton of stuff on Facebook and has no privacy settings on.
Dave, did they request your passwords or access to your social media sites, or merely just tell you that they were looking at your profile. I have heard of employers making candidates give them access to social media sites, sometimes even passwords. I know there were some court cases, but I don't know where the law stands on that. I think it is overly intrusive, and would be a red flag to work for a company that intrusive.

Re: Swamp Job Questions
I might have had a social media check before, but I doubt it. Before going to Australia, I had been at my previous job since '96, so that pre-dated any social media. And before this new job, I'd been working in such a niche field (accelerator controls engineering) that everyone already knew me.The Sybian wrote: Dave, did they request your passwords or access to your social media sites, or merely just tell you that they were looking at your profile. They didn't ask for any passwords, but when it was taking a while for the background check to go through, I told them which sites I had accounts on to try and speed the process along.
Re: Swamp Job Questions
Soo... it's been a couple years now since my company got acquired and since I had a real job. I've gotten to really enjoy the freedom and the lack of responsibility. And, now my daughter is going away to college. The wife and I can take spontaneous trips, etc. But, I'm 59 years old, and sometimes it gets a bit boring not having a job. Now, with my daughter leaving the house, I know I'll get even more itchy. But, I'm resigned to the fact that I'm done with the corporate world.
I have a couple job opportunities I'm considering. One would be with a tiny family-owned business in San Francisco, but the people running it seem a bit flaky, so I'm leery about joining them. The other one? Don't laugh, but I'm strongly considering becoming a letter carrier for the US Postal Service. A postman. A mailman. How did I get here? Some months ago on a lark, I checked out their website and from that they had my email address. Then, a couple weeks ago, I received an email that they were holding a job fair because they are desperate for letter carriers in my home area (because it is so expensive to live here, they have a hard time filling these positions.) So, I did the fair, filled out their forms, took their tests, applied for the job and interviewed. The guy who interviewed me told me (unofficially) to expect an offer letter soon. So, if that happens, I have to decide if I really want to do this.
What does the Swamp think about this? I'm a bit conflicted.
PRO
I'd qualify for better, and much cheaper health insurance. That matters to me, given my past health incident. (The interviewer told me that I'd qualify to get insurance even though I'd start as a substitute - I'd still work full-time even as a substitute.)
If I stick around five years, I'd get their retirement program. I don't know the details of it yet, but I'm told it's good.
Any wages I make would be more than the <zero> I'm currently earning.
Good exercise, relatively simple job (I think), little stress, no boss over my shoulder, weather here is easy to deal with, short commute.
Having something to do every day.
CON
I'd be low man on the seniority totem pole, and probably getting the worst schedules for awhile.
Because of no seniority, I'd probably have little time off, especially around holidays, which would limit my travel opportunities at those times.
In general, a loss of the freedom that I've now gotten used to.
Job doesn't pay a lot (but that's not a big deal)
I'd be walking 8 miles a day, which is a lot for an old guy, even if he is in good shape.
I feel sheepish for saying this one, but if I'm being honest, I've always had semi-prestigious white-collar jobs, and I socialize with white collar people, so I'll admit I am just a bit concerned about some fuckers looking down on me for being a mailman. It wouldn't bother my own ego - I'm past that point in my life, but you know... (I should note that my wife and best friends are supportive.)

I'm dying to not work so I'm all for not working over working. But I like the broad employment viewpoint. No clue about the postal service. Can you go to the y instead? Good luck.
Re: Swamp Job Questions
How long do you plan on working? If it’s about 5 or 6 years I’d say the USPS is a the no-brainer. You will basically be guaranteed employment for the term you want to work most likely. If you think you might want to bug out for good in two years or so I’d go the other way though.

When I'm done with this military thing I'm so looking forward to not working. I'm staying the fuck away from any job in base. My plan for an eventually job is ID checker at Costco because I want a job with the least responsibility possible.

Re: Swamp Job Questions
I heard an interview with David Byrne once, years ago, where he said if he wasn't a musician he'd want to be a mailman.
I have a real job interview on Tuesday. Like, 'put on a suit/sign an NDA/give a power point presentation/go through the 6 person car-wash routine' kind of interview. Been spending all day working on my power point that I'm going to give. Yikes.
Also, I'm being recruited to work for a Web/Tech consulting firm. They have offices in SF, LA, NY, and Chattanooga. Just opened an office here in Seattle about 9 months ago, with only 5 people for now. Its kind of like an ad agency, where you do 3-4 month long projects for a company and then move on to the next one. It would be really different than what I've been doing, but I'm intrigued. I have a 'programming exercise' with them on Thursday.
And I have a phone interview with The Great Satan (Amazon) on Wednesday, but I may cancel that based on how Tuesday goes. I've already turned down interviews with Facebook and with a company that collects 'click' data.

Poker is somewhat quasi-legal in houston right now, clubs are advertising on tv and radio and we as an industry exist in a grey area until texas law catches up. the legality comes from charging a door fee and equipment rental instead of taking a rake.
i got hired at a club last november, got a promotion in march to head dealer\floor\tournament director. two months ago i took a second job for two days a week because a close friend was opening a club, he asked for my help and its a difference of a 80 minute drive each way vs 25. i explained to my old job why i was doing it and the two days were no big deal, still getting 4 days a week and 48 hours a check from the original job.
the new job closed dwon two weeks ago. instead of giving the two days back to my original job i went to competitor and got hired for the 2 days i had open. the owner of my club calls me in to talk to me today, asks why im at a competitor and wasnt the company good to me. in fairness i make a lot more money here than other places pay as a base rate, but the tips at the new place are much better. i lose about 70$ a shift for each of the four shifts i work at old job instead of new. that being said, when this club hired me 9 months ago i was unemployed and thanks to having worked down in houston poker off and on since 2003 i couldnt find a job. these clubs close all the time and i told the owner i just feel much safer having a second job in my back pocket.am i being unreasonable here? my sxhedule with my old job didnt change so i didnt feel like i had to consult them with what i do withmy off time. am i wrong?

You are not wrong. It is not uncommon for some employers to frown upon employees having second jobs but it is a b.s. response that is hopefully becoming less common as time goes on. If your first job didn't want you to have a second then they should be paying you more, giving you more hours or a combination of both. Unfortunately, some regressive management types throw out things like "aren't we good to you" because they feel some sort of personal affront to you doing something else...in this case it's probably because you are working at a competitor.TT2.0 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 1:56 am So long story ahead beware.

Every day when I hear the mailwoman (she is always on the phone talking way too loud), I think how much I'd love that job. Walking around listening to podcasts and books all day sounds awesome. Doing that in Bay Area weather makes it a dream! Here, I'd have 100 degree days with high humidity, tons of rainy days and blizzards to contend with. Go for it! And fuck anyone who might look down on it.
I don't know what the benefits are these days, but in my government days dealing with unions and labor laws, USPS employees were exempted from just about every federal employment statute, because they had an insanely powerful union, and negotiated out of every restriction on federal employees.

Unless you signed a non-compete agreement (which are rarely enforceable), you don't owe that guy anything. You haven't reduced your availability to work at the second job, and I doubt you are divulging secrets to hurt the business, so don't feel any guilt over it.TT2.0 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 1:56 am So long story ahead beware.

the new job closed dwon two weeks ago. instead of giving the two days back to my original job i went to competitor and got hired for the 2 days i had open. the owner of my club calls me in to talk to me today, asks why im at a competitor and wasnt the company good to me. in fairness i make a lot more money here than other places pay as a base rate, but the tips at the new place are much better. i lose about 70$ a shift for each of the four shifts i work at old job instead of new. that being said, when this club hired me 9 months ago i was unemployed and thanks to having worked down in houston poker off and on since 2003 i couldnt find a job. these clubs close all the time and i told the owner i just feel much safer having a second job in my back pocket.am i being unreasonable here? my sxhedule with my old job didnt change so i didnt feel like i had to consult them with what i do withmy off time. am i wrong?

Re: Swamp Job Questions
sancoarlos, the only thing that would give me pause is losing your vacations/days off around the holidays. If you are okay letting those go in short term, I agree with others, sounds pretty great.

Re: Swamp Job Questions
is this a common enough sentiment on employers to try to find a way to fire me? we spoke again today and he told me that he understands i have a family to think about and while he doesnt like me working for prime he understands it, but he also told me as long as i worked for him i would be employed, that if the poker room got shut down he would give me a job at one of his other businesses and that i would never have to worry about finding a job as long as him or his son was around. From my experience Arabic employers really takethat "treat employees as family" concept literally. i asked him for a half day off to go to my girlfriends dads funeral. he gaveme two days off to be with her and asked me what i was gonna wear. i told him my work clothes and he hands me 500$ and says to get a suit because it shows proper respect for the departed. not a loan, just a gift 500$. hes that kind of good boss to work forGoodKarma wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 8:45 amYou are not wrong.

I would tell whomever at your first job to pound sand...if there are no rules against working for a competitor then you are free to do as you choose.
