Just curious, has Brian G. ever commented to you how he feels about Vince Russo? Seems like some in the wrestling community really like him but others despise him with the passion of a thousands suns.
I've never talked to him about him, but I never really knew about Russo until the last couple years. Brian G. is rather non-confrontational and really interested in keeping his privacy (like how Edge and Christian didn't mention his name when he was at the live Jericho podcast in NYC), so I doubt he'd ever publicly discuss him.

I would guess Brian is not a fan, though.
Just getting back to this, I looked at Russo's wikipedia and I am pretty sure Brian's hiring was when Russo left. It said Russo was back for a little bit in 2002, so I think that would be the only time they overlapped.
When Brian was on Jericho's podcast, he said when he first interviewed with the WWF, he had several interviews with folks, including Shane, Linda, VKM and Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara. He said the only interview that went well was the one with VKM, which is really the only one that matters. IIRC, he said he was called back by the WWF for the writer's job after Russo and Ferrara went to WCW, but I assumed Brian and Russo worked together at some point. I think Russo came back to the WWE briefly after WCW closed, but I could be wrong about that.

Russo's an interesting character in pro wrestling. He was in charge of creative when WWF was at its peak and when WCW was at its peak, but it sure seems like he pissed off a lot of people along the way. A lot of wresters I've heard on various podcasts have buried Russo because he had some really stupid ideas (such as making David Arquette the WCW champion).

Brian had earlier scripted some MTV stuff when they had a few WWF guys on for a one-off thing, which is how he met some of the guys, including Rock, and eventually got the job interviews. If my memory is correct, after the interviews, it was a "we'll let you know" situation and Brian went home. The day he got the call, Brian's roommate, another friend of mine, told him he had seen online that the WWF fired their writers. Later that day, Brian had a message on his answering machine.

I was listening to Prichard's "Wrestlemania 15" podcast over the last couple days. He said it was Russo's last one and that made me think about the dates. He was knocking Russo for all the swerves they did in that show, so he didn't seem to be that much against him (seems like some stuff was good and some stuff was bad). Schiavone likes Russo, mentioning in his podcast that Vince supported his style of announcing.

Current WWE and former ECW wrestler Rhyno ran for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives last year, but lost. And I think Rick Steiner was on a school board, too. And of course, Jerry Lawler ran for mayor in Memphis years ago but lost.

Sabo, let me know if you want me to get Big Poppa Pump's autograph for you when Big Time Wrestling comes to Syracuse. $30 (plus service fee) for the meet and greet, in addition to an event ticket.

Sting's meet-and-greet is $75, but doesn't feel more overpriced than Gangrel's at $20.

Prices like that makes me wonder how they can only afford lawn signs for advertising around town.

Do those normally get sourced locally? I ask because I suspect the staff photos are not legit.

Just finished watching GLOW last night. I really enjoyed it. The three leads are good (Alison Brie, Marc Maron, and Betty Gilpin). As soon as it was over, I said to my wife that my three year old would probably love to watch wrestling.

Coincidentally someone emailed me today and offered me tickets to Summer Slam this Saturday. Hopefully the little guy can stay awake long enough to enjoy it.

I haven't watched wrestling since Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior, and the Junkyard Dog were still at it. Any tips on what to look for?

Don't know. IIRC, the "hos" for The Godfather in the WWE were all local strippers, so there's a precedent for acquiring local talent.

Just go and have fun. The modern pro wrestling style is more athletic and acrobatic than the 80s and early 90s, so it might seem more exciting. But I haven't watched the WWE hardly at all since Wrestlemania, so I couldn't begin to tell you who's facing who at Summer Slam.

They never even mentioned how poor the commentary was. Of course, trying to put that over would have been a colossal waste of time.

At one point, Cyrus mentioned the commentator said Bulldog was from "the province of Winnipeg", so it was touched on briefly.

I've watched a couple for other Bulldog matches before and they are all equally awful. I completely understand why they hated the guy.

Despite not being much of a wrestling fan, after hearing so many stories about Ric Flair's partying glory days* I'm looking forward to this 30 for 30.

* - One of the tamer stories involved Flair running up a five-figure bar tab one night before a PPV and attempting to stick Eric Bischoff with the tab. After Bischoff refused to pay it, there was a tense standoff and Flair threatened to not perform and it took some United Nations-level negotiating to work out who would pay what and to convince Flair to perform. The night after the PPV, Flair did it again (and this time Bischoff just sucked it up and paid.)

Rough day for former pro wrestlers. Nikolai Volkoff, Brian Christopher (aka Grandmaster Sexay from Too Cool) and Brickhouse Brown (a long-time heel in southern promotions in the 80s and 90s) all died today. I haven't seen a cause of death for Volkoff, but Christopher hung himself in jail after he'd been arrested for a DUI a couple of days ago, and Brown died from prostate cancer.
