Aging

Post by The Sybian »

Watched a clip of Don Rickles with Carson last night, and I was absolutely shocked when they mentioned their age. I know most people feel a lot younger than they are, and when you were young you thought your current age seemed really old, and now not so much. But looking at old movies, shows, and news footage, people looked a lot older 30+ years ago. It's not just plastic surgery and hair dying. Anyways, I couldn't get a good image where Carson and Rickles were both looking at the camera, but how old do these guys look in this picture? Don't try to guess the year and their age, just say how old they look.

Cigarettes are a helluva drug.

That's a great point. Shocked me for a second that Carson was smoking a cigarette during the interview. Another clip, they had an enormous ashtray on the coffee table and several guests were smoking. Amazing how normal that was back in the 70s, and now my kids think it's a huge scandal because my neighbor was outside smoking a cigarette (he is about 70) , and my daughter confided a huge secret that she saw another neighbor about my age sneaking a cigarette outside. That guy might be hiding it from the wife and kid, but my daughter acted like she confessed to witnessing a murder.

My wife and I watch a lot of old movies on TCM and we often comment on this fact, too. You'll see some actor on tv and look him up on IMDB or Wiki, and say, "Wow, he was 35 when he made this movie, and he looks 55!" I think every generation has "a look" that looks much older to the following generations.

Also, "if you're balding, clip your hair short or shave your head" not really being a thing then.

They look like current mid to late sixties to me. Curious about IRL then.

The thing flying around twitter in the last week is the note that Wilford Brimley was younger in Cocoon than Cruise is in the most recent Mission Impossible.

Guessing mid-late 50s.

I used to watch this era of Carson, and man, these guys seemed so old.

Not only that, but 6 years younger. (Brimley was 51 in Cocoon.)

The clip was from 1973. Both men were 47.

Diet, exercise, smoking, etc. were all much less known/espoused/whatever.

Those guys probably ate heavy salad dressing, gravy (or a similar sauce), and some sort of bread and butter with dinner four or five times a week, thought fried foods were fine (especially a breakfast with eggs and bacon), and probably rarely drank anything other than coffee and alcoholic beverages.

I was talking with someone at work today who went to the Pearl Jam show last night. He was saying 'God...Eddie Vedder is so damn old. I looked it up...and he was born in 1964! That was so long ago!".

I just looked at him and said "ummm...I was born in 1964".

There was a video about the first games of Magic the Gathering caught on film in 1994, someone tweeted at the person showing the clip that they were 2 when that video came out...

I distinctly remember being at Tmobile in 2008 when I first worked with a kid at a full time job who was born in the 90's

(sorry to the actual olds in this thread, age is relative.)
