Page 80 and really liking it. Fan of Leibovich's writing, and he has brought a ton of snark and scepticism to his look at the league. (But he is also a hugely knowledgable fan).

Sounds like the book is good, but damn that is a terrible font for a major publisher release. #typographysnob

But I'm loving it, Leibovich's insults of the NFL owners in the first couple chapters are fantastic.

I'm slowly getting my way through Everything Trump Touches Dies.
I just recently finished Yes, We Still Can.
Next up is Fear.
Tuesday, I'll be getting The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis.

Re: Fall Reading Thread
A big part of my reading these days is audiobooks while traveling. Started Zodiac yesterday and got about 60% through it. I did not know much about this case at all. Im actually not remembering the movie, which I think I saw but may not have been accurate, so it's kind of a cool thing to be in suspense about a true story.

Leibovich should cover the NFL full time.
His take down of Goddell is fantastic. And his scathing comments about the slime ball owners are worth the price of the book.

I just finished the Expanse series - it was fantastic. And I'm finishing up Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole mystery series (after going through the Wallander series previously).
I need a new murder mystery series or sci fi series or some other fiction that will distract me from the world.

Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch stuff is pretty good.
There's even a series on Amazon featuring Titus Welliver as Bosch.

Yeah, if you've never read Michael Connelly's Bosch series, then look no further. You'll have about 20 books to plow through and they're almost all excellent. George Pelecanos' Derek Strange books are excellent as well.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Thu Oct 04, 2018 4:45 pm I just finished the Expanse series - it was fantastic. Pelecanos was one of the writers on The Wire and co-creator of The Deuce if that moves the needle at all. His novels are wicked underrated.

Cool. It’s on the list.
I bought Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King last night. If that takes, that gives me three long crime books.

It's a genre I'd never thought I'd be into, but Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books are great. I'm down to the last one and holding off on reading it cause I don't want it to end.

Longmire's a sheriff in Wyoming. Recently widowed and best friends with a Native American who helps him solve crimes. Suspenseful and hilarious. There's a TV show based on the novels as well.

it's so good -- I love reading it and then seeing the name of a random old football player who I remember pop into the story being told at the moment.

Like, 6 or 7 seasons of a show which is quite good.Giff wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 7:16 amLongmire's a sheriff in Wyoming. Recently widowed and best friends with a Native American who helps him solve crimes. Suspenseful and hilarious. There's a TV show based on the novels as well.

Re: Fall Reading Thread
The show is almost as good as the books. It ran six seasons...the first three on A&E; last three on Netlfix. All seasons were available on Netflix last I checked but I think I read that the A&E seasons were getting pulled off. The show built a nice cult following...so much so they hold "Longmire Days" in Buffalo, WY every August...most of the cast usually attends. Buffalo is where the author, Craig Johnson, lives.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 9:11 amLike, 6 or 7 seasons of a show which is quite good.Giff wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 7:16 amLongmire's a sheriff in Wyoming. Thanks. I’m also reading the one king did with his son Owen. Sleeping beauties.
Owen is talented too. His debut novel was excellent. Double feature.

Two talented sons. Joe Hill’s first 2 books were great. #3 is meh.

Strange weather is good so far. Halfway through it. For novellas so easy to switch to something else. Fireman was great for 2/3 but definitely fizzled.

New Haruki Murakami book finally came out on Tuesday (Killing Commendatore). Just downloaded it to the Kindle and looking forward to spending a lot of time with it. You can't just race through a Murakami book.

Re: Fall Reading Thread
My personal favorite is 1Q84, but that's a daunting book (about 1,000 pages).
If you're looking for a quicker read that is still "classic" Murakami start with Norwegian Wood or The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Kafka On The Shore is great too and reflects Murakami's move in later years towards more surrealistic and fantastical elements.

Re: Fall Reading Thread
Kafka on the Shore is the only one i've read. It was just OK to me, but clearly talented as a writer. I always wonder how translators can convey things so well that you can still get a sense of awe at the writing ability.

Re: Fall Reading Thread
I've wondered this as well. Interestingly, Killing Commendatore was inspired by Murakami's work in translating The Great Gatsby into Japanese. I do know that especially for A-list type authors the people doing the translating are usually accomplished authors in their own right and probably do a great job of translating the nuances of language.
