Uncle Dirk.
I'm sure there are hundreds of these stories, especially this time of year, but I wanted to throw this one up.

yeah... decision was made last night to post the fundraiser link all over last night -- they are leaving for ireland (where he's from) to be with family for a bit.
not like they have some grand life style, or some such big careers, so they need all the help they can get. i believe some of the boys will be closing up their place and all. no clue on long term plans or if they'll come back... important thing is they be surrounded by family (there) and friends here to help them eventually get on.

There should be legislation forbidding 5-6 year olds from singing "We're Going to be Friends" at kindergarten graduation.

I don't know that one and I don't want to listen. They also did that "One Call Away" song which is complete garbage except she likes it and she looked over at her little sister and smiled during it too.

about 26 rows directly above Larry Baer (yellow tie, white shirt in background) is my location when that photo was snapped. And I didn't need this news story to feel old, as I saw Dusty play high school hoops. When the children of guys I saw/knew/played against in my youth start retiring, and managing, I'll feel another level of old I suppose (Will Venable, I'm looking at you.)A_B wrote:From the Dusty Baker files

BTW, as we've been going to the vet a lot for my dog going through chemo ... man, I've seen some things I can barely think about, much less type up. I don't know how folks who work in those places don't become raging alcoholics. Maybe they do.

I firmly believe that there is a special place in heaven for the people who work and volunteer (!) in the palliative wards at hospitals. Sadly, it's a place that we will all visit at some point with the heaviest of hearts. Just imagine getting up every morning to spend a full working day there. Those nurses are saints.

I'll call those two and raise you a class of special needs kids, some impacted by autism pretty heavily singing and dancing to:Ryan wrote:One Small Voice here. This was at a school where I was presenting, not my son's class. There was one little boy who sat there with his fingers in his ears swaying to the music, but not singing. A minute or so into the song I see him start singing, but he isn't singing what everyone else is singing. I move over to hear what he's singing and I realize he is doing the background vocals, perfectly, in a beautiful voice. He kept going for about a minute and then went back to swaying quietly. Music reaches kids, even when they seem completely tuned out. My son gets music therapy weekly and absolutely loves it. He writes songs and performs them with the therapist and sends them to us via text on Mondays during the school year.

Re: The Dusty Thread
Yeah, I was familiar with that story but that was brutal. I think I almost appreciate how brutal, like it didn't take the standard "he's in a better place", things-are-looking-up approach that just seems impossible every time I read it.

Medical staff stopped what they were doing to line the walls of a hospital in Idaho, joining family and friends in a powerful show of respect for an organ donor.
Video of the moment shows dozens of people paying silent tribute to the 53-year-old man in what is called the "Walk of Respect" as he was moved from the ICU to the operating room, where he was then taken off life support and died.

Re: The Dusty Thread
That’s a great story. Barkley is one of those frequent visitors to Las Vegas that I’ve heard only good things about in terms of how they treat people. You might (or might not) be surprised to learn casino workers in Las Vegas often get treated worse than workers doing similar jobs in other cities. I guess many people (not just celebrities) figure they can do whatever they want here and treat the locals like dogshit.
(The other guy who is universally loved by every casino employee I’ve ever met is — also maybe somewhat surprisingly — Ben Affleck. You will not find a single employee at my wife’s casino with a bad thing to say about him.)

A former work colleague of mine got to hang out at a hotel bar in Boston with Barkley and the other TNT guys (plus Bill Russell!) after a Celtics game about 5 years ago. He said that Barkley was very friendly to everyone and very much acted like a regular guy.
Re: The Dusty Thread
i put this on fb, and its a long story so im just gonna cut and paste, but i cried real tears yesterday
I'm not the best at expressing feelings, but let me tell you guys a story. This is gonna take a minute, so indulge me. Im 33. For the past 32 Christmases, every year my godfather would pick me up and we would go look at christmas lights...to the point that he flew out to florida when i lived there just to do it. it was tradition, and it really fucking mattered to me. He passed away last christmas eve, and I had mentioned this tradition to ashley last year in passing. i never said a fucking word about it after he died. i did realize our tradition died with him and this year was gonna be really fucking hard. So Ashley Anderson, my fiance', the woman who will one day be my wife went out and got us tickets to the light festival. Just to keep a stupid tradition alive for me. Just to make a very brutal time of year for me better and easier. How do you thank someone for having that much heart? THIS is why i'm marrying her. Every single day its a million little things like this.
