Re: 2018-2019 NHL Season
Nate Schmidt gets 6 years, $5.95M AAV extension. Like most of the other recent extensions probably a bit on the high side right now, but could be a steal two or three years down the road (though he's much older than Tuch and Theodore and GMGM isn't buying any arb years).
Vegas shouldn't have any cap issues for the foreseeable future and still has more than enough powder to re-sign W. Karlsson and easily sign Panarin or E. Karlsson if either make it to free agency.

Probably. And Karlsson will probably re-sign for 8 years after the trade deadline in SJS, but money can change things pretty quickly so those guys might want to listen to offers where they'll save $10M in taxes over the life of the deal.

I think Erik Karlsson and the Sharks already have a handshake deal in place that they will formalize when he can sign a max deal.

I basically said as much.sancarlos wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 11:40 amI think Erik Karlsson and the Sharks already have a handshake deal in place that they will formalize when he can sign a max deal.
But at this point, he'd be doing himself a disservice to not go to FA and at least listen to all of the offers from other teams like Tavares did.
The two main reasons to sign a long extension early is comfort with a team/franchise and security, especially related to injury. He'll only be getting about 30 to 40 games of security for the latter and while I'm sure he likes it fine in San Jose and the long-term prospects for winning are good there as well, it's hard to imagine he's already all-in on the former yet either.
An 8-year deal in San Jose at $12M AAV is worth about $4-5M less total than a 7-year deal in Vegas or Tampa at $11M AAV. Plus he's still "only" in his age 36 season after that point. If he and his agent are smart, they'll just let it go to July 1 and see what happens. For what it's worth, I would say the same thing if it had been Vegas that swung the deal without a long-term extension being involved. If he were playing on Vegas right now without the extension, he'd still be foolish not to get an offer from all 31 teams on July 1 if he's not going to get hardly any security from a devastating injury outside of one that happens during the playoffs.

Re: 2018-2019 NHL Season
Your points are valid, and he could still change his mind. But, I've seen it implied in print that Doug Wilson wasn't going to swing that trade without that understanding in place.brian wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 12:59 pmI basically said as much.sancarlos wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 11:40 amI think Erik Karlsson and the Sharks already have a handshake deal in place that they will formalize when he can sign a max deal.

I don't know the answer to this, so it's an actual question not a rhetorical question, but couldn't SJ have done a sign-and-trade with him and Ottawa to get the 8-year term without having to wait until after the trade deadline.

(Not like they’re too stupid to sign a contract and make a trade, but I wouldn’t for a second put it past them to leverage the contract into demanding more, especially post-Hoffman debacle.)

Re: 2018-2019 NHL Season
I don't believe anyone has ever done a sign and trade in the NHL cap-era.
What would be the advantage other than the extra year? For example, could the Islanders have signed Tavares to 8 years then trade him to Toronto? What would they get? a draft pick? The way team manipulate contracts, they're front loaded anyways.
So in the SJ example. is it worth it to give up more for the extra year? Would Ottawa do it? Then what if Eriksson balks and doesn't want to be traded?

Re: 2018-2019 NHL Season
In that hypothetical yeah, the extra year to the player is very valuable and theoretically worth some compensation to the team making the trade. I assume your scenario is a post-July 1 theoretical as opposed to a situation like Karlsson's where he had one year left on his deal, but if the extra year was important enough to Tavares to sweeten the deal, would be worth sending a late-round pick to the Isles to make it happen. I don't know all of the rules around it or if it's even possible to do it, but could see it happening one day if the current CBA has similar restrictions around contract length extended into the next CBA.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 2:49 pm I don't believe anyone has ever done a sign and trade in the NHL cap-era.

Re: 2018-2019 NHL Season
I'm sure SJ and Karlsson have a handshake agreement. I'm also sure SJ are happy to use that extra year to have him under their medical staff's eye to make sure his ankle is worth an eight year contract.

If DOPS gets a better angle on this play, Coburn's gonna be sitting a few games.
ETA: For context, the hit knocked Pacioretty out for at least the first period so far and I doubt it was because of a hit to his chest.

Everyone has suggested that the Flames are the worst run sports organization on earth. From PR, to game experience, to pre-game ceremonies. Heck they can't even retire numbers properly.

Using a four-star rating system for transparency, administrative and fundraising costs, cash build-up and social outcomes, CIC gave most foundations one star, placing them in the bottom 20 per cent of over 700 charities that have been put under the group's microscope.
Only those foundations supported by Toronto-based teams — the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs and Raptors — scored two stars.
The report criticizes how much the foundations spend on fundraising, relative to what goes toward charitable causes.
It found, for example, that for each dollar raised by the Calgary Flames Foundation only 30 cents goes to a charitable cause. On the high end, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment — owner of the Leafs and the Raptors — and the Vancouver Canucks for Kids Fund are in line with other charities, in the 70-cents range.
The average for all charities examined by CIC is 75 cents, leaving 25 for overhead, Bahen said.

The Athletic had a good piece on Quennevhlle's firing. The headline tells you all you really need to know:
Fall guy: Joel Quenneville takes the heat for Stan Bowman’s roster decisions.
Surprisingly, now-retired former brainless goon Daniel Carcillo has turned into an occasionally thoughtful writer. He had a couple tweets on this firing:

Re: 2018-2019 NHL Season
Tomas Tatar on a tear.
Funny, in the summer we were all in agreement that Vegas won that trade, but in this young season, Tatar has been a scoring machine for Montreal while Pacioretty hasn't done much (partly because he got hurt).
I read a couple articles about the Ottawa "Uber scandal" and the NHL Network guys are in a froth about it, but it seems like a tempest in a teapot to me. The guys were bitching about their coaches. So what. It's something every employee/player does about their boss/coach at times, especially if they are on a losing streak. But, this gets noticed because they got videoed. And Ottawa always seems to have some sort of mess afoot.
As usual, the Sharks are driving me nuts. They look like world-beaters one night, then shit the bed the next. Too much coasting. Lather rinse repeat. But, I'm encouraged because Erik Karlsson is starting to look like Erik Karlsson, Joe Thornton and his beard are back, the Big Pavelski is rebounding from his off-year, Brent Burns, Evander Kane and Logan Couture are looking like they deserve their big contracts, and best of all, 22 year-old Timo Meier is blossoming into a star power forward.

From the quotes I read, it was a pretty tame, borderline factual, takedown of a coach who isn't getting results. Coaches say worse shit about their players postgame on a daily basis.

Malkin, yeah absolutely. Though I really don’t know where Oshie thought he was going there.
And yes again to your final statement. He stole that game.

Directly to the puck-carrier?
Re: 2018-2019 NHL Season
Yes. But Malkin didn’t even change direction. And absolutely Malkin knew he was coming and what his slight movement was going to do. It was just odd because you’re used to seeing that when guys are going different directions and one clips the other as they pass.

There looked to be a good bit of shenanigans that the TV may not have caught. Thought the officiating crew did a good job not letting the game go south.
Also at this point I get Ovi is very good but how do you not cheat more on the Power Play to him. The only question on the caps PP is if Ovi is high point of closer to the circle for the pass to one-timer.

Oshie is cutting around behind Malkin, you see him put on the brakes and try to shimmy behind him. Malkin dips back and pretty clearly makes a deliberate move to Oshie's head.rass wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 8:52 am Yes. But Malkin didn’t even change direction. And, look, I'm on record multiple times calling out Wilson for being a shithead. That was a shithead play from Malkin.
