My MIL is back living with while we adjust to the new schedule and/or we move to Denver, and we got into it last night about this. She started pearl clutching about Pete Davidson and I told her how as a Trump supporter how extremly hypocritical that was. I hadn't even seen the bit, only read what he had said. I'm surprised I'm still surprised at how transparently idiotic conservatives are when it comes to just about everything, but especially shit like this.

Crenshaw had a great response. Nobody should be upset or demand an apology, because it was a joke. The real crime was that the joke wasn't funny.Giff wrote: ↑Tue Nov 06, 2018 8:53 am My MIL is back living with while we adjust to the new schedule and/or we move to Denver, and we got into it last night about this. Gotta say that one of the things that I can not understand that intelligent Americans stand for is the electing of judges.

Re: Random Politics
For the record, I'm not suggesting passing up a chance to step on their necks. But they have to be put into that position first. The idea that a relatively narrow House majority is carte blanche to do whatever they want despite not having control of the other legislative body, the executive branch or the judicial branch is kinda silly.
There's a lot of work to be done before then and some of it is going to involve occasionally eating a little shit to get something better accomplished (or to stick with the war metaphor, sometimes losing a battle to get in position to win the war.)

Re: Random Politics
There are actually a fair number of Democrats who are regretting their straight-ticket vote due to Harris County judge Ed Emmett being voted out and replaced by someone who has zero experience.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 10:38 am The mood in Texas (well, Houston/Harris County).

Yeah, it'll suck too when this lady is an unmitigated disaster when her job as an interpreter at a hospital doesn't translate into being a top judge in the 3rd most populous county in America.

Re: Random Politics
Good thread on The Problem With Ohio. (My quick take -- it's basically overrated as a swing state. It's essentially Indiana just with some bigger urban areas that trick people into thinking that it's got a lot of Democratic voters. So like Indiana but with three Indianapolises instead of one.

My gall is sufficiently mitigated. Thank you for your concern.
Re: Random Politics
Sure, though that goes into the column that argues that Ohio is a southern state and should essentially just be treated as such as far as prioritizing where resources go for national elections. Every year, the DNC pours all kinds of money into Ohio and that money could probably be better spent in other places.

Honest question - do people need a law degree to stand for election as a judge?

McConnell:
Will Democrats Choose to Continue Bipartisan Achievements in New Congress, or Put Politics First?
Also McConnell:
Mitch McConnell Just Blocked A Bipartisan Bill To Protect Robert Mueller.
When will Democrats capitulate to our version of bipartisanship!?!?
Reminds me of a podcast I listened to where a former Intel guy was being interviewed and he talked about his time guarding prisoners in Guantanamo. He was there when Khalid Sheik Mohammed was there.
He said he asked him "How can you say that Islam is a religion of peace when there's a significant amount of violence done in the name of Islam?"
KSM said "Islam is a religion of peace. When everyone is a Muslim, only then will there be peace."
Same fucking logic. I swear I'm throwing a party when McAsshole kicks.

Re: Random Politics
Don't forget his conspiring with GOP leaders to make a pact to fight everything Obama wanted to do, regardless of the idea, then actually announcing his job is to obstruct everything Obama wants to ensure he is a one term President. The ACA negotiations are a perfect example. Call for Obama to negotiate, Obama cedes ground, GOP holds firm and cries that Obama refuses to work with them. Obama cedes some more ground, GOP stands firm and demands Obama accept their entire position, complain that Obama refuses to work with them. They all tell the same lie, FoxNews repeats it 30 times a day for 8 years, and it becomes fact in the minds of the cult, and no amount of evidence can sway that.Johnnie wrote: ↑Wed Nov 14, 2018 11:10 pm McConnell:

Re: Random Politics
Its going to be incredibly interesting to see where Pelosi and establishment House Dems go over the next two years. Will they drift left with the newcomers and govern along the lines of what rallied midterm voters or will they try to cut them off in favor of middling "bipartisan" "accomplishments" knowing a drift left might be successful but will cost a lot of them in future primaries (a la Crowley). I know what I'd bet on!
