Except for the simple, unavoidable fact his response was broadcast for all to see and hear. I’m not sure what’s endearing about that, at all.

I agree - and it shows that even doing the simplest things, when it would behoove him to be nice, he has to prove that he's smarter than the person he's speaking with. Even if it's a 7 year old kid on Christmas Eve.

We all struggle with all of the Santa Claus bullshit. People project a lot of their own issues on to Trump but I can relate to talking to some random kid and not knowing if they still believe in Santa or not and not wanting to sound like an idiot if they don’t. But I don’t have kids. You’d think a father of five might do better.

He sired five kids. Not sure how much of a father he is/was.

He’s the President of the United States fielding an annual call from some random, small child about Santa Claus. It’s a really simple way to act the part of the benevolent, American president: ask the child if he’s been a good boy, and then let him know that NORAD was on the phone and it would appear that Santa had left the North Pole en route to bring gifts to kids just like him.
But no - he tries to tear down yet another institution. Fucking dumbass.

You always assume the kid still believes if there are under ten or so.
You know what you need? A lyrical sucker punch to the face.

1. The story was funny
2. It was funny in the way that stories about your alcoholic uncle are funny.
3. There’s a non-zero chance that he got Santa and Jesus confused.

Yeah, I don't and didn't really give a shit about this. Though it's interesting that he can apparently be shamed into doing something he doesn't want to do.
I really don't give a shit about the draft dodging either to be honest. There was plenty of rich kids who ducked the draft to avoid going to Vietnam. It only matters when he tries to opine on military matters by insinuating that he has any personal experience with any of it. But he's really not been too bad with that stuff. Hell, Reagan ducked service in World War II and then had to balls to institute some of the shitty things related to returning salutes to servicemembers, etc.

IMO, one of the last things liberals should want is for a President with strong fascist tendencies to do more symbolic events with the military. The more he stays away, the better.

Media has been mocking him for a year that he didn't visit a war zone. Now they have to double down.
Why didn't he go sooner?
Why did he bring his wife?
Why was he only there two hours?
Why was he signing hats?

Yes we did, that's how Obama created ISIS. Trump and Fox say it all the time. Obama pulling out of Iraq was the most horrible thing ever, but instantly deciding to pull out of Syria against every experts' judgment is Presidential brilliance. At least a lot of voices and politicians on the Right are showing a modicum of consistency and integrity by not agreeing with pulling out of Syria.
While we are talking about Obama pulling out of Iraq, wasn't he following Bush's negotiated withdrawal plan? If he failed to follow Bush's plan, the same politicians and pundits would have killed him for that.

While the point about the hypocrisy is true, I don’t agree that “every expert” thinks we should stay in Syria. It’s just that you’re a lot more likely to be deemed an “expert” if you argue for an indefinite US military presence in the Middle East than if you argue for disengagement. We never should have been fighting a covert regime change war against Assad in the first place and that, along with Libya, is among the worst missteps of Obama’s Presidency. The Sybian wrote: ↑Thu Dec 27, 2018 12:54 pmYes we did, that's how Obama created ISIS. What every expert will agree to is that whatever decision you make, especially wrt foreign policy that involves dozens of other countries, you don't just make a unilateral, shoot from the hip decision without consulting your top advisers.
Trump is a fucking moron. You can disagree with Obama, on solid ground. You will never convince me that he would ever pull something as stupid as what Trump did last week on Syria.

On the issue of Trump consulting with his foreign policy team, I’m with Rand Paul:
Yeah, Trump’s a moron and his process is garbage. But we should disengage from Syria and Afghanistan and I’d rather a moron get us there than that we keep following the disastrous bipartisan foreign policy that has resulted in the utter devastation of Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya and Yemen.

More devastation probably isn't possible without just dropping a nuclear bomb. Doesn't matter how, we need to get out of the Middle East period.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
Yeah, you are correct. I didn't carefully articulate my point, but Nonlinear's response covers what I should have said. Totally agree with you, that military hawks are going to call for war, and Trump surrounded himself with the biggest hawks around, so I don't want him to strictly follow their advice. But as Nonlinear said, there is a correct way to pull out, and that isn't making an emotional hissy fit and Tweeting that you are withdrawing without consulting with your staff or allies fighting with you. Again, you don't want to just do whatever the Kurds want you to because they are our ally, but you can't just pull the rug out from under them without warning. It's pure insanity! What are our other allies thinking? Do they trust that the US is going to stick with them when it matters? Fuck no, even the UK and Canada would be foolish to think they could rely on us for anything at this point.Joe K wrote: ↑Thu Dec 27, 2018 2:05 pmWhile the point about the hypocrisy is true, I don’t agree that “every expert” thinks we should stay in Syria. This is true and is probably the only defensible rationale for staying. But it’s ironic that many of the same media and political figures expressing this view just got done praising George HW Bush as the great foreign policy of his time when he completely left the Iraqi Kurds out to dry after the first Gulf War.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Thu Dec 27, 2018 7:40 pmEspecially considering that Trump made the rash decision after talking with Erdogan on the phone.Square Rob wrote: ↑Thu Dec 27, 2018 6:32 pmI get all of that.
