I would be utterly shocked if there isn't a player opt-out by the third year at the latest.

Re: 2018-19 MLB Offseason Thread
I find it hard to believe he couldn't have gotten a higher AAV. Seems like he just wanted the biggest total dollar amount and in that sense the Phillies got a pretty good deal all things considered. Even if he the declines at an expected rate, that AAV for the last five years of the deal isn't going to be that ridiculous probably.
ETA: And I'll be shocked if someone in the Phillies organization doesn't admit this deal was made with the expectation of the universal DH being in place well before the last several years of this deal.

Most people would regard that as a sentence, not a deal.

I don't know if AAV is really the way to look at this deal. This is basically like the Phillies paying Harper $36 mil per year for 4 years, $28 mil per year for the next 4, and $15 mill per year for the last 5. It's just that the money for those first 4 years is deferred.brian wrote: ↑Thu Feb 28, 2019 3:19 pm I find it hard to believe he couldn't have gotten a higher AAV. Is this the closest baseball has come to Hossa's 12-year contract with the Blackhawks?
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Can I speculate, given the 3 or less year deals and dearth of bidders for Machado and Harper than owners are going to go all in on a true salary cap in the next CBA?

He was an adopted younger brother who Swihart's family took in when he was in high school. Sucks I don't know about these good stories about athlete's families until after a tragedy happens. Then I learn about it from some random yahoo writer.

Curious here ... looking at the Machado and Harper deals, if you were the team, without shifting money where would you cut them to make it as team friendly as possible?

Harper by year:
2019 (26): $30MM
2020 (27): $26MM
2021 (28): $26MM
2022 (29): $26MM
2023 (30): $26MM

2028 (35): $26MM
2029 (36): $22MM
2030 (37): $22MM
2031 (38): $22MM
So if today you could draw a line and say "this is where I'd stop the deal if I could, from the team standpoint", where would it be.

2031. I think him making that in 12 years will be a bargain. After reading a bit about it, I think it's a solid deal.

Right now, guessing at his career and thinking DH by the time it matters, I'm in it for the long haul.
My biggest legit worry beyond the unexpected would be that if he's literally making half of the other stars he supposedly wants on his team and the manager tells him to run or something, he becomes a problem

If I had a worry, it would be his swing. Its insanely fun to watch right now (see: HR Derby reverse angle) but there's just so much going on you wonder what happens as he ages or if he picks up any kind chronic condition, even if its not major.

From a ballpark perspective, is this a good/bad/lateral move? When I played the show, my left-handed power hitter raked at Citizens Bank.

Re: 2018-19 MLB Offseason Thread
Park factors say Washington is better for hitters but Philadelphia sure seems like a great hitters' park. And Harper has 14 HR in 208 career PA there (although he won't get to hit Phillies pitching anymore!).
Re: 2018-19 MLB Offseason Thread
Machado by year:
2019 (26): $30MM
2020 (27): $30MM
2021 (28): $30MM
2022 (29): $30MM

2025 (32): $30MM
2026 (33): $30MM
2027 (34): $30MM
2028 (35): $30MM
I might cut Machado's deal off a year earlier than Harper just because more of his value is tied up in his position and he's only been "good no matter where he's playing" at the plate in half his pro seasons.
