Someone on Twitter posted that this whole thing is tracking the plot of A Few Good Men. We're about a couple of days away from Sheriff Goodell barking at Philbin: "Did you order the Code Red?!"

Another point is that considering the Bountygate penalties, the door is open here for similar action against the Dolphins. Though if this report is true, Philbin's career is probably over anyway.

When these "quiet at first" stories unravel, you see a lot of people taken down at the end.

The Monday Night game is Miami -at- Tampa. Yeehaw.

Schiano is no longer the most embattled coach in Florida. Hilarious.

2009 - Incognito named the NFL's dirtiest player. Here's a recent nfl.com article about how Incognito has been turning his life around.

http://www.nfl.com/incognito

Fun quote:
after Miami’s recent preseason game against the Houston Texans, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin pulled his players into the team's main auditorium and started a meeting by projecting a play onto the big screen in the front of the room.

The play has since drawn national headlines: Texans defensive end Antonio Smith, apparently antagonized by Incognito’s relentless needling, ripped off Incognito’s helmet and swung it at his head.

“This is how you respond to this situation,” said Philbin, rewinding and replaying the moment over and over to show Incognito’s passive reaction. “We have to keep our composure and not retaliate.”

Multiple players say Philbin was fired up during that meeting, proud of Incognito and center Mike Pouncey for walking away from a provocative situation that later resulted in a three-game suspension for Smith.

In a watershed sense, this was validation of Incognito’s turnaround: He walked away from something that, in the past, would have surely sucked him in.

I don't think that's fireable, even if he did order the code red. Isnt a reasonable action of a coach to try and get "team leaders" (I know) to make a soft OL tougher? Its one thing if he suffocated the kid but talking isht and calling someone a half-nigga isn't all that bad. Enough to justify retaliation, sure. But that was the intent, to get the guy to stand up. And he miserably failed. Id just as soon have him gone anyway. The only problem is choosing Incognito to do that sort of thing. You don't pick a particular douche to do that.

I'd be less concerned with the slurs than the death threats.

But that's just one honkey's opinion.

ETA: definitely fireable. And it'll happen quickly and thoroughly.

I have little doubts the coaches mentioned "toughening up the rook" to Incognito.

I have many doubts that they suggested he call him a nigger and offer to fuck his mother.

In addition to the death threats (which were allegedly more than the innocuous "I'm gonna kill you"), extorting $15,000 and forcing him to fund a trip to Vegas he didn't even go on... that is a fireable offense if the coach ordered Incognito to toughen up the kid. I doubt the coach knew the extent, at least I really hope he didn't, but that was still done under his order. The Dolphins have to fire him.

Richie Incognito considered 'an honorary black man' by Dolphins teammates

Maybe that's true, as ridiculous as it is, maybe it's true.

One thing we can take from that article is that if Incognegro really was respected by a significant number of his team, it may well be impossible for Martin to return to the Fins. Evocative of a certain incident in the NHL a few years back, which shall go un-named, wherein the actions of one guy resulted in the downfall of several careers.

Oof.
Per multiple league sources, Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland received a call from Martin’s agent, Rick Smith, before Martin left the team on October 28. Smith complained to Ireland about the manner in which Incognito was treating Martin.

Ireland, according to the sources, suggested to Smith that Martin physically confront Incognito. Ireland specifically mentioned that Martin should “punch” Incognito.

Yeah. It was Dez Bryant.

degenerasian wrote:This story is getting weirder than Manti Te'o.
What I'm not clear on is how all of the extortion stuff from last week fits in. Otherwise, it seems pretty straightforward. The coaches and front office liked Martin, but wanted to light a fire under his ass. They picked Incognito because he plays on the line and he's a team leader (it seems like there is nothing but respect for Incognito coming from the players). Unfortunately, they picked either the wrong tool, or the wrong method, (or both) to do fix Martin, and it's blowing up in their face.

Good point - how does making Martin pay for a trip to Vegas he wasn't going to go on, "toughen him up"?

How do you guys see the future? I'm willing to bet that Martin will never play a down in the NFL again awhile Incognito certainly will.

I'll take the opposite, degen. There are locker rooms in the league where Martin can do just fine. No one will touch Incognito, even the new Raiders. I also think Philbin is done, along with the culpable position coaches.

Ryan Tannehill Awarded “Honorary Black Guy” Title in Special Dolphins Ceremony
In fact, the Honorary Black Guy ceremony was simply Tannehill reading rap lyrics with the N-word in them, followed by his real black teammates declaring him “not racist.”

Philadelphia wide receiver Riley Cooper has reportedly repeatedly applied for Honorary Black a Guy status this season with the Eagles, but has been denied each time.

I've seen Incognito at the local beach bar where he is currently shown going all crazy in all over the interwebz. I knew his history (this was over the summer) and figured he might punch me for looking at him wrong. This is the same bar where the bouncers beat the hell out of that dude at a few months back.

Fun place!

Martin is actually like, good at football so I hope the Steelers pick him up and no one tells him that they'd like to cum in his sister's cunt.

That's excellent.

We'll probably never find out the full extent of what happened in Miami but it is a safe bet that a pile of stories will crawl out of the woodwork sooner rather than later. I'd be surprised if anyone was "out of football" permanently over this. Martin will get a shot with a more Dungy-like team or at least in more liberal environment, to whatever degree that exists; there are far too many Dolphins standing up for Incognito for Martin to functionally return there. After the NFL investigates this and eventually fines and suspends the one guy upon whom this is currently falling, someone will sign Richie Honorarynegro although this developing story about sexual harassment won't help him much; the dirt is just starting to get thrown around. Philbin might be fined and suspended as well but if Miami fires him it will be because he has a losing record at Miami.

This even has guys climbing out of the dustbin to get their two cents in. Now Warren Sapp is claiming, ages after the fact, that Incognito called him a nigger during a game. Although Sapp also said it didn't bother him. Sapp, of course, was known as the biggest mouth in the game back when he played. I'm not trying to defend Incognito in any way but I'd wager that Sapp's treatment of his own teammates would be no less reprehensible than Incognito's. And remember his soul stinks.

Then, some time in the off-season, the NFL will send out an official memo to all the teams informing them that there are now new behavioral standards to be met, punishable by league discretion (as all PC things are discretionary, vague). "Inappropriate conduct" and "conduct detrimental to the league" will get a tougher definition, in some fashion, to discourage future incidents. And, oh yeah, y'all gotta stop making rookies pay for $10,000 meals.

I doubt by a mile that this is the only intimidation/harassment, call it what you will, incident that occurred in the NFL in recent, or current, time. But it is the one we are hearing about and thus it is the one that will get the loudest reprimand. It would be naive to believe that the other 31 teams don't have a similar pecking order among veterans and rookies.

Not at all.

My reason for consideration of that thread as the appropriate home is not so much for Martin's reaction to whatever harassment he was subjected (since we still don't know the full laundry list of shit ladled upon him). Rather for much of the reaction of the media and public as being pussified. Not all, not even a gross characterization of the overall public reaction.

But there has been some very pussified reaction. Which brings me back to my initial confusion and discomfort over the word 'bullying'.

The word has a much broader, less specific range of meaning than it used to. Two people are likely to have very different concepts pop into their minds today than a generation ago.

For me, for all the upside and benefit of the societal, cultural and institutional recognition of and reaction to bullying, there is a whole downside, which is (imo) way too close to 'pussified' ills such as hate speech, hate crimes and other PC bullshit. This is a general opinion and general response when I hear the word bullied; I have read or heard nothing at all around the facts of this particular incident in this vein. Only some particularly ignorant commentary here and there. But I expect it.

Again, this is me expecting the worst. Projecting several moves in advance of the facts in hand. An institutional 'no tolerance' policy on hazing from the NFL (and trickling downward through football culture) might be a hugely positive great thing. A ban on the word 'nigger' (nigga, and other forms as well) in the locker room resulting in immediate severe penalties, not so much.

Judging from some of the pussy commentary I have heard (and I have also heard plenty of neanderthal hyper-macho commentary which I rank as worse than what I have heard on the distaff side), and judging from how far we have regressed as a society in matters I think are not far removed (hate speech, pc laws and regulations, et al), the mere word 'bully' causes me to think 'pussification'. Even if you completely substituted 'hazing' or 'harassment' for 'bullying', I'm still thinking 'pussification'.

Again, also. I do not think Martin is a pussy. Not enough facts for a final determination, but on the facts revealed so far, insufficient to indict much less convict. The millieu surrounding this story--definitely pussified America.
