It's a Friday Music Discussion!
This song sticks with me, and every time I hear it, every time!, I can picture myself waking up in my senior year dorm room, lights blazing, TV on, me slumped on the couch because I was too drunk to get up to my loft (but not drunk enough to try anyway, I guess) to hear and see poor, devastated, writhing and written upon Jewel being manhandled by some 90s dude in a ruffled shirt. God damn she was pretty.
Why can a song so easily take you to a place and time? What songs do that for you, and why? Both great questions but not why we're here today.
What we're after today is which section of the song is the most achingly sad? Feel free to watch the video multiple times and use it as a reference (maybe you can pinpoint the exact moment her heart breaks in two).
Verse 1:
I hear the clock, it's six A.M.
I feel so far from where I've been
I got my eggs, I got my pancakes too
I got my maple syrup, everything but you.
Verse 2:
I break the yolks and make a smiley face
I kinda like it in my brand new place
Wipe the spots off of the mirror
Don't leave my keys in the door
I never put wet towels on the floor anymore
'cause
Chorus:
Dreams last so long
Even after you're gone
I know that you love me
And soon you will see
You were meant for me
And I was meant for you.
Verse 3:
I called my mamma, she was out for a walk
Consoled a cup of coffee but it didn't wanna talk
So I picked up the paper, it was more bad news
More hearts bein' broken, more people being used
Verse 4:
Put on my coat in the pouring rain
I saw a movie it just wasn't the same
'Cause it was happy or I was sad
And it made me miss you oh so bad
'cause
{chorus}
Bridge:
I go about my business, I'm doing fine
Besides what would I say if I had you on the line?
Same old story, not much to say
Hearts are broken, every day.
Verse 5:
I brush my teeth, I put the cap back on
I know you hate it when I leave the light on
I pick a book up and then I turn the sheets down.
And then I take a deep breath and a good look around
Verse 6:
Put on my pj's and hop into bed
I'm half alive but I feel mostly dead
I try and tell myself it'll all be alright
I just shouldn't think anymore tonight
'cause
{chorus}
The plaintive little "yeah" right at the end:
Yeah, you were meant for me and I was meant for you.
Author's note: I'm not sure if the video version of the song was always a slightly different recording from the album, or if she re-recorded it at some point, but the cut from Pieces of You on Spotify is not the definitive version as included above.
