The Chipmunk in My Garage

Post by The Sybian »

The stone blocks that dge my garage and driveway boundary settled a bit, and there is enough space for a chipmunk to get in. I've seen him in there a handful of times over the years, and never really cared, because he is cute, bolts out the garage door when I walk into the garage, and doesn't get into any food or damage anything. My father, asshole that he is, told my daughter 3 or 4 years ago that chipmunks attack people, so she is terrified of to go into the garage by herself. Yesterday, we all got out of the car in the garage, and for whatever reason, the kids lingered. I left the door between the garage and house open, thinking they would come in behind me. I hear the kids screaming. They are in the car and see the chipmunk. They scare the chipmunk, who runs into my house. I walk towards the garage, and see the chipmunk run back into the garage. This doesn't bother me, because it's a chipmunk ffs. My wife saw the chipmunk run into the house, and she is ready to move.

I've mentioned this to our pest control service in the past, and they don't handle chipmunks. Anyone every remove a chipmunk? I imagine a mousetrap would work, if I research the best bait, but I don't want to kill him. Trapping him is probably pointless, unless I release him miles away from my house, because he will just come back in. I guess I could fix the garage door situation, I've found two tiny snakes stuck to glue traps in he garage over the years. So, do mouse trap and kill the little guy, or try to trap and remove him?

If you change your mind on killing him, just get a cat, or borrow a neighbor’s cat, and that chipmunk will be gone in no time. Cats love nothing more than hunting chipmunks.

It seems to me that this wasn't a problem until your dad told the kids that chipmunks attack people, so I think simply telling them that grampa is full of shit should do the trick.

Hav-a-hart traps. peanut butter with a couple of seeds on the bait lever. Had to snag one in my attic a few years ago.

Even something like this would probaby catch a chipmunk. Put it along a wall or in a corner.

Been telling them Grandpa is full of shit for years, but he buys better gifts.

My wife ignored the kids being afraid of the chipmunk, because she probably never saw it. The biggest issue was that she saw it inside the house.

This only really works in dry climates, but it is effective. Fill up a 5 gallon bucket half way with water. Chipmunk is thirsty, reaches in and falls in. because it's a smooth surface, they can't climb out. They drown.

Right now, I have a lake in my driveway and my entire lawn is covered in 2 inches of water. Probably not the best time for this trick. Used this trick at a friends house in HS to catch a mouse. Damned thing was screaming while thrashing in the bucket, so we ran the bucket down to the woods, dumped the mouse, and he was back in the house the next day.

we had one get in the basement last year (no more way in - i cleaned out the dryer vent, put a new grill on the outside of it... and sealant foam around the bricks.. so that's done) -- saw it, it saw me and ran into the laundry room - thought i had it trapped after not finding it for an hour - went to bed.. next morning come to find .. that the mutt had found it and killed it.. the mutt has stuffy squirrels she plays with --chipmunk was the right size and color.. thing must up snuck up in the night.. until the dog pounced on her. no puncture.. probably suffocated and beat up to death. fuckers stay outside now.

Peanut butter on a coke can with a stick poked through it length wise will work. make sure the can rotates freely, high chance of them falling off and into the water and drowning.

Went with the old school mouse trap. After 3 or 4 days, found a dead mouse in the trap, but that must have been enough to scare the chipmunk away. Haven't seen him since. For some reason we have an extremely high number of chipmunks and squirrels this year, particularly squirrels. Been seeing a lot of wild rabbits, too. I think the baby foxes need to step up their game. Not sure if I posted those pictures. Someone posted pics on the town FB forum of newborn foxes in their yard. Adorable. Come to think of it, I haven't seen the fox that lives in my neighborhood in awhile...

Definitely a mouse in the house. I put some poison out where no one/thing/dog else can get it, and traps over night the last few nights.

This morning the first two I checked were empty and the bait was gone. The third trap was missing completely! I checked around a bit and couldn’t find it, and pondered while I walked the dog, then came home and realized it must have gone under the fridge or the stove. The trap was wedged under the stove, way in the back, no mouse.

I read your other post in the random thoughts thread and thought it was about the mouse when you said "She Left. It wasn't my fault."

Hey if you're lucky maybe that poison will also kill that owl that keeps you up at night.

If you're going to kill the rat, then snap its neck. Don't poison the predator that winds up eating the rat.

Yeah, a couple neighbors' cats got poisoned in my neighborhood a few years ago. Probably from poison aimed at rats.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

As for poisoned bait not killing the rat...It’s not like you left a note by the poisoned bait letting the rat know it was just for him. Poison all but guarantees unintended consequences. Google what it does to raptors (eagles, owls, hawks, falcons etc).

Sup ER? You’ll be happy to know I killed a mouse tonight, no poison. The brazen little fucker has been coming out from under the stove with the lights on and us like 10 feet away eating dinner. I saw him scoot out a couple of minutes ago while we were in the next room on the floor playing a game. So, I put a trap down.

Not even 5 minutes later, SNAP SQUEAL.

Got him, but it wasn’t a killing blow. And it would have taken awhile. Youngest kid starts bawling. So I filled up a bucket with warm water, grabbed some pliers and dunked him. Tried not to watch.

Need a drink. Me. Not him. He’s good.

Oh, also a female cardinal must have hit a window in the back of the house because she was laying dead on our patio this afternoon. Learned about that and had to clean it up after I got done showering after I returned from the supermarket.
