Thing is, you kind of want your fellow regional rivals to do well in these tournaments.
Tons of scenarios, but we want to win outright by a couple of goals to feel safe. Because of GD, a tie or a one goal win leaves us open to Nigeria if they tie or win. A Ukraine win allows for a US draw to be enough. Dicey proposition, because I think Nigeria is probably a better team than Ukraine.

To get to the knockout you need to be 1, 2 in your group or one of the 4 best 3rd place teams. A tie should do the trick. Group B and Group C have big +/- deficit. Group F could also be in trouble.
US currently top of the 3rd place teams.
The ranking of teams in the group stage is determined as follows:[16]
Points obtained in all group matches (three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat);
Goal difference in all group matches;
Number of goals scored in all group matches;
Points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
Goal difference in the matches played between the teams in question; (not relevant for 3rd place)
Number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question; (not relevant for 3rd place)
Fair play points in all group matches (only one deduction could be applied to a player in a single match): (US actually not in a great spot on this tie breaker)

Drawing of lots.
Good call looking that up, I always forget about the 3rd place finishers.

WEAH!!!!! Pounced on a defender's heavy touch, beat the defender with a sweat move, cut it back through the defender's legs, pulling the goalie to his left, shooting across to the goalie's right. Much needed, as Nigeria and Ukraine are tied at 1-1 in the 79th.

MMMM..not sure if 2nd place in the group is good. 2D plays 1E (which will likely be Le France who are favorites in this tournament).

3rd place will get Senegal, Italy, or Uruguay.
Ugh, I was just looking up who the US plays next. Going for 3rd place concerns me with the lack of certainty, but that would have been a better path.
As for Norway beating Honduras 12-0, WTF??! Norway lost their first two matches, so this looks a little match-fixie to get Norway a 3rd place spot. Honduras had 2 red cards, but the first was in the 57th minute, when the score was already 7-0, and the second was in the 92nd minute.

Video highlights are posted. Looks like Hondo was not really trying. The 2 reds were legit (elbow to head on a header challenge and 2nd yellow on an ugly tackle). Goalie and D looked WEAK. https://www.fifa.com/u20worldcup/matche ... ras-arrive
I'm too lazy to look it up, but a lot of times what happens in the third group stage game is the coach starts a bunch of dudes that hadn't played much. Which, is nice in theory, but quite often those guys are already disgruntled for not seeing the field, so they don't come out and play very well.

I just watched the highlights. That goalkeeper was fucking terrible. Not that his defense did him many favors, but he flat whiffed on at least three goals he should have stopped.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.
US will go into the round of 16 without Durkin (DC United) and Mendez (Frieberg). Interesting to see what roster they roll out. Everything I read questioned roster moves because the US looked tired and now go into a big game without 2 key cogs due to card accumulation.
Ukraine stomp on Panama, Ecuador beats Uruguay (who will play US or France), Colombia over NZ in PKs, Italy over the hosts 1-0, Nigeria up 2-1 against Senegal with just under 40 to play.
