MI playing Tex Tech right now for shot at going to the 2 of 3 title series. They are 2-0 and a win this afternoon would do it. Lose today and they play again tomorrow.
They are up 2-0 going into the T2. Lots of game left, of course.
Anyways, I just heard a nugget that was pretty amazing. Because the way the regionals, super regionals and now CWS set up pretty far from home:
Since May 12th, the MI baseball team (and everyone involved) have spent 5 nights in Ann Arbor. That's insane.

Well, not to take a valid point and kind of shit on it, but...
MI's "winter" semester wraps up end of April and Commencement is typically the first week or of May. I have no idea how things work out for others schools that end later.

My daughter's school (Washington) is on the quarters system, and she finished taking Finals for spring quarter just last week.

The hockey team only went that route some time in the late 80s (I think?), definitely wasn't like that when I was a rink rat at Yost in the 70s and early 80s.

First CWS final for MI since 1962.
Absolutely dominating on the mound. First team since 1990 (GA) to get to the final using only 3 pitchers.
15-3 against a TTU team that swept them earlier in the year.
Pretty unreal.

Rooting for chaos on the other side of the bracket, so far so good.
L'ville and Vandy tied at 2 in the bottom of the 9th. Vandy wins, and it's a nerd final series. Cards win, and they play again tomorrow.
As I was typing, Vandy now up 1.

MI continues it's crazy ass run with a fairly dominant 7-4 win last night. They did so while being not so great with runners in scoring position.
They face Kumar Rocker* tonight for a shot at the title. Dude threw a no-no against Duke in the Super Regional, so... Challenging foe, to be sure.
* - If you tuned in for a nanosecond of the CWS while Vandy is on the screen, you've been reminded that Kumar is the son of Tracy Rocker, former Auburn stud and currently the DL coach at Tennessee.

Hard to doubt Michigan at this point, but that's a rough matchup. Thinking it's gonna go to a winner take all game. (That said, that Kauffman kid who is probably pitching for Michigan today is damn good.)

Re: Ping! College Baseball Thread
MI lost a close out game to Creighton and came back and beat the tar out of them in the next game. Thing is, that came down to MI being in the driver's seat due to not having to go to their bullpen or waste a starter being in the winners side of that bracket. Not only is Vandy's bullpen and starters a LOT better than anything MI faced (even UCLA), they are also on the winner's bracket path, and haven't really had to wear anyone down on their journey.
The hidden secret (though it was referenced last night) of MI's recent success is their D. They've made play after play after play on this run. Not necessarily spectacular diving stuff... Just making clutch plays, like Brewer throwing a guy out who was trying to extend a single going first to third. That guy gets on and it's 1st and 3rd with one out (I think, pretty sure one out). Now it's a guy on 1st and 2 outs, which is just night and day.

Re: Ping! College Baseball Thread
Pretty amazing run for Michigan. They were unranked in polls going into the 64-team tournament, 3rd seed of 4 in their bracket, which means they were ranked by the committee somewhere between 33 and 48 (analogous to a 9-12 seed in March Madness). They beat the #1 ranked team in the country (UCLA) twice to get to the CWS, and now are looking to beat the #2 ranked team (Vanderbilt) twice to win the title.

Sucks that TSU was one of the last teams out though. They had an argument for an at-large bid.

I get what M is doing with the pitching tonight. I get it.
But fucking hell. This hard to watch. Giving momentum to Vandy is suboptimal.

7-inning perfect game for CMU's ace against one of the better teams in the MAC, Miami. His stats this year have been ridiculous, Coming into the game he was 5-1, 1.95 ERA, 50Ks in 55 innings.

So South Alabama is beating the snot out of host #15 Florida in their home ballpark in Gainesville. 19-1. Currently undergoing a weather delay.
Next up, Miami v my alma mater, South Florida.

After such a great start to the season last year before everything got shut down, the Gators really shit the bed this year. Just never got things going consistently. What a sour taste to end the year.

As far as I could remember, wouldn’t they shuttle the regional between Tallahassee, Coral Gables and Gainesville, and it all depended on who was the better team that year?

Sometimes 2 would host. It's possible all 3 did at some point when they were all top-10 teams.

Dude on UVA threw 5.2 innings in relief in a do-or-die game. He had 16 Ks. The team as a whole threw 24 Ks, the third most in an 9-inning game in college baseball history.
Totally Kafkaesque

Can we make this a softball thread now too? That play by the JMU pitcher Friday night is one of the most exciting sports plays I've ever seen. I hope they can pull it off tonight, but I have a feeling OU will blow them out.

Same. I really enjoy watching the WCWS.
James Madison was the first unseeded team to win their first two games in the WCWS and Odicci (pronounced "odyssey") Alexander was terrific. I was watching that game against Oklahoma State and didn't realize they had already beaten Oklahoma, an offensive machine, in their first game. They (JMU) were fortunate in last night's outcome (FSU beating Alabama) in that it set up a second elimination game, meaning the tournament got stretched out another day and they did not have to play a second game against Oklahoma yesterday (they were watching FSU-Bama while in uniform and got to go back to the hotel).
