Then maybe businesses need to take a hard look at their finances and pay a fair rate to people with certain skill sets? It's probably not that cut and dry, but on a case by case basis there really needs to be a priority of readjusting profit margin to fair compensation.
(I mean, I know that as a member of the military my labor is free. I get paid based on rank. But the amount of work I'm responsible for far outweighs how much my wages are. So I have to be crafty in other areas and see the forest through the trees: 2 more years of this shit = money and medical for life. Plus my next job will utilize my security clearance, experience, and degrees. The problem is not everyone is in this position and has to work a bunch of low wage odd jobs to keep their head above water in an environment where the rent is too high along with everything else -- all while being condescended to about "not working hard enough" from a generation that didn't have to work nearly as hard to live far more easily and save for the future.)

Yeah, we don't want to fuck up our present day meritocracy of pay.degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 2:57 pmI think it does. Your skill set is now equal value to a lesser skill set.

So restaurants are under the same rule? Man when I worked it restaurants we got like 3$ an hour that we had to supplement with tips.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 12:26 pm And....so far...the only businesses hurt by it are the shitty ones that were going out of business anyways (Its become the #1 boogie man when a poorly run restaurant has to close down).
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Absolutely! The minimum wage also serves to depress the wages of others and not just those working for it. A company can tell you you're making twice minimum wage and a lot of people would feel good about that, but they probably won't bump you up to $30/hour if the minimum goes up.Johnnie wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 3:10 pm Then maybe businesses need to take a hard look at their finances and pay a fair rate to people with certain skill sets? But then college education and costs come into play. Colleges promote to invest now and get the rewards later.A_B wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 3:08 pm I can see those being paid near the $15 mark getting squeezed out of raises if a company has a lot of people making less than that that the company now has to make up, but if you're at a job that already pays a decent amount over the minimum wage, but still not in the 40-50k range there is an argument that it's not a high-skill position. It might serve, however, to remove the stigma that working at a restaurant is less valuable than data entry/lower level position at a corporate entity.
Not in all cases but usually a data enterer paid xxxx for a college certificate/degree while the restaurant worker did not.
That's the stigma of educated versus uneducated that seems to be increasing over time.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
And I think that's Mr D.s point...that maybe it shouldn't be such a stigma. Maybe if people could earn better money before/during college they a) wouldn't feel the need to incur huge debt right away or 2) would save up to help pay for college/certification.
And there would be some that don't really want to go to college who could conceivably get in better financial position right away. $15 an hour isn't awesome, but you could live on that with a roommate in a lot of places.

Whereas right now you can make $31.8K doing minimum wage labor for literally half the hours in your year.

It's kinda sad tonight that they have attacked Obama's policies more than Trump's.

Not watching, but is it a tactic to attach those policies to Biden?degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 8:58 pm It's kinda sad tonight that they have attacked Obama's policies more than Trump's.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Also not watching but no one on stage tonight, with the possible exception of Harris, has any chance at catching Biden without taking aim at some of Obama’s policies. Biden did plenty of crappy stuff before 2008 but for most voters that’s just not going to matter because their image of him is as Obama’s trusty sidekick.duff wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 9:30 pmNot watching, but is it a tactic to attach those policies to Biden?degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2019 8:58 pm It's kinda sad tonight that they have attacked Obama's policies more than Trump's.

Missed it tonight due to volunteering at a thing. Apparently Andrew Yang and Julian Castro came out on top? And CNN showed its as again? Nice.

Democratic Socialists won't even endorse Warren if Bernie doesn't win nomination.
This is why people hate Bernie. His cult of supporters is almost as bad as Trump's.

Stepping back a bit... If the game plan for a lot of these folks is to raise their profile and then bow out to run solid Senatorial campaigns...
I said a few weeks back, if you force the GOP to protect seats that they usually don't have to worry about, it fucks them up not just from a national strategy standpoint, but also within that state. The reason there were historic swings in places like VA and TX is that they couldn't take money out of Cruz or other statewide races and focus down ballot.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
DSA seems to be younger, whiter and more affluent than Sanders’s overall cohort of supporters. I thought about joining a few years ago because they do some good grassroots activism but didn’t in part because I think they have some bad political instincts. They’re overly committed to embracing the Socialist label (e.g., using the word “comrade” and the sickle and hammer logo way too much) in a way that I think is counterproductive.
That said, although Bernie will likely need to drop out and back Warren, or vice versa, at some point in the primary process they should not commit to that strategy too soon. A LOT of the people who are currently promoting Warren as a better alternative to Sanders will turn on her in a second if she’s the only strong leftist candidate.

I don't know, man. As a responsible gun owner, I keep a running tally of all my hate crimes so that when I buy a gun I self identify them. Makes the process go a bit smoother, but I get a funny look. Its just commonsense.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Haaa...yeah it's hilarious the suggestions that are just thrown out nonchalant after these incidents. Nobody seems to realize that in the large majority of these cases, prior to his mass shooting spree, the shooter was a responsible, law-abiding gun owner. A good guy with a gun!
And now Geraldo wants armed security in "every place innocents are gathered". Huh?

So...not Congress or the White House? I see what he did there.
So fucking over the "more guns = more safe" argument. Forget the hours and hours of training, handling, and learning about firearms, just give Jethro with the itchy trigger finger a .45 or an AR and we're immediately 100% safer. Complex problem solved via Facebook meme guidance.

I mean, if there was ever a time for Beto to drop out and take on Cornyn, this has to be it, right?

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
1,000%, yes. Beto is best when he's like this and not some fish out of water on a national debate stage.
He'd be jump-started by significant momentum and be able to unify Texas Democrats thoroughly.
And taking into account that in a presidential election year the down ballot effect, it's a strong likelihood he'd make it this time.
Plus... If he drives turnout, Texas might flip blue. Who knows. He'd ultimately help the Democrats get both the White House and a Senate seat.

So Some strategist with the GOP thinks that blaming violent video games is a good move.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Wait, if guns don't kill people, then video games don't kill people either, right?
I get that people have some reservations about these games but right now the biggest shooter far and away is Fortnite and it's more comical than actually violent.

It is a good move, even if its just everyone saying "shut the fuck up about video games". The distraction is the intent there.
