And while they've made it easier to rise regardless of the confederation you are in, which was a problem with the previous system, advancing to the Hex or whatever still isn't going to get you as many points (due to competition level) is it does in S.A. and Europe.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2019 3:41 pmI just looked at the new SUM formula they use, and I think you're probably right. The formula takes into account the relative ranking of the teams that beat them and there's (obviously) nothing about the severity of the losses factored in. That said, they started 2018 in 55th place and ended it in 71st. That's a pretty precipitous slide, no matter what system you are using to rank. The new ratings were put in place or calculated using the new formula in August of 2018, taking the WC results into consideration after having rank ordered everyone using the positions they were in July 2018.
I actually think the new formula is a decent improvement, mainly because it factors in the range of competitions (friendly all the way up to WC). It also devalues friendlies played outside of the FIFA calendar, which I really like. Those games are often bullshit. Oh, and you don't lose points for losing in knockout stages of championship tournaments.
Anyways Panama has only dipped a few more slots over the course of 2019. The new formula doesn't do some average going back a year from the current date. It is what is as you win or lose going forward. I like that, too.

I think you want qualifying to be more games not less games due to the multiplier. The US is not going to get seeded in World Cups when they play 10 games compared to SA who play 18. That just means more death groups.

I agree in theory, but we are a long way off from the US getting anywhere near a top 8 seed. BTW, how is 2026 going to work, are US, Mexico and Canada all getting automatic bids? Does that leave the rest of CONCACAF to battle it out for one playoff spot?degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2019 6:34 pm I think you want qualifying to be more games not less games due to the multiplier. Lichaj named captain of Hull City for this year. When was the last time an American wore the arm band in England? I am guessing Jay DeMerit with Watford.
Kyle Scott joins Newcastle (after getting cut from Chelsea..1 1st team appearance with the blues).
Dest got the start in Ajax's Dutch Super Cup win and almost scored.

Got tickets for USA v. Cuba at Audi field. $24...pretty happy about that. Cheaper than a DC united match for the same seats. Also the return match will not be in Cuba (electricity problems), so Cuba is hosting their games in the Cayman Islands.
Re: 2022 is a long way away USA Soccer Thread
So there is a story that is starting to come out now that says Darlington Nagbe has turned down call ups by the USMNT for the gold cup (as a replacement for an injury) and again for this September. He has made comments that point to him not being selected instead of this story...
Also saw something that Paul Arriola will not be called up for September games. WTF? He has been one of the best players to date for the US team. Are they giving DC United a break as they fight for the playoffs?

Seems ok assuming its going to be kids getting the minutes. Arriola will be there when it matters and Nagbe's time has probably passed.

US U-17s beat the Mexican U-17s 2-1. Goals by FC Dallas' Pepi and son of Reyna. Giovanni is a special talent.
USA v. Mexico in a friendly tonight. Dest gets the start...he has been getting some calls from the Dutch national team recently. Hope the US cap tie him in October.

Completely disagree, especially for baseball. How much time is spent at commercial breaks? The rare times I watch live games on TV, I usually pause the game for 30 minutes, to FF through commercials and breaks. Even with soccer, I hit the 30 second FF button on goal kicks and injuries.

I don't mind watching a game on DVR as long as it's a game I don't have to worry about people texting me during it to give away the result. Baseball and football are perfect for watching on DVR (soccer, less so though there's less chance of someone giving away the result of a random regular season MLS game probably).

Re: 2022 is a long way away USA Soccer Thread
So we have a slightly lesser team vs a slightly lesser Uruguay squad tonight.
U-23s beat Japan 2-0 (Brooks Lenon and Mason Toye scored)
U-20s beat the UAE U-23s 3-0. ohan Gomez, Cole Bassett, and Matteo Ritaccio scored within 9 minutes of each other.
U-17s lose 4-1 to Denmark. 8 changes in the roster to the team that beat the Dutch 3-1 over the weekend.
Plus Dan Flynn retires after 19 years at CEO and Charlie Stillitano's company sues US Soccer over antitrust behavior for approvals of games in the US.

* - Am I the only one?
* - Am I the only one?
- * - Yeah, so, I don't have anything against Brad Guzan, truly. Seems like a decent guy, solid MLS goalie. He needs to be expunged from NT duty. He is gaffe prone, pure and simple. You simply can't have that guy in net when shit is life or death WC-level stuff. Sorry, Brad, but I'm done with you.
* - What the actual fuck are we doing playing on these types of HORRIBLE fucking fields. It's embarrassing that one of the richest countries in the world puts soccer games on fields a Rec coach would fire off a nasty email to the league. Seriously. It's. Fucking. Embarrassing.
* - I like a lot of what we're doing going forward. Morris looks really good. The Dutch kid. Sargent. It's starting to come together.
* - So, tactically, Uruguay is playing a really tight zone defense (in basketball terms). You have to skip the zone to break it down. At least 6 instance I counted where Morris or someone else is WIDE OPEN on the "weak side" (american football parlance) and a 25-40 yard pass hits a guy in space with no defender near.

Re: 2022 is a long way away USA Soccer Thread
US Defense still a bit weak against quality 1-1 players. Long and Dest had a few gaffs. Not giving up on them yet, but we need to develop some top notch backs and killer defensive midfielders.
Re: 2022 is a long way away USA Soccer Thread
I thought Morris was the best player on the field last night. He would've had an assist if Tyler Boyd didn't miss an absolute sitter in the first half. I would much rather see him on the field than Zardes (yes, I know I am stating the obvious). Dest played well for the most part, but he was burned a couple of times defensively. Add Sargent, McKinnie and Pulisic to that attack, and they look promising up front. But they still need better service to be effective.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:00 pm R U Gay* first half thoughts:

The field was terrible. Any time they lay grass turf over a baseball infield or artificial turf, the field becomes a clusterfuck. FIFA (and MLS) should require all fields to be played on grass, but that will never happen because of money.

The thing about the field and money is that they can literally play these games anywhere they want. Anywhere. It's preposterous that their first level filter isn't "excellent grass field." Just make a spreadsheet of all the best stadiums in the country and then you can lay whatever marketing/promotion/logistical issues they want on top of that. Fucking ridiculous.

Close:
My biggest takeaway from the game was that the Federation is still a complete joke. I get the desire to play in St. Louis, which has always been a hotbed of soccer and for a long time ignored as a site for games, but if we can't play on a high quality field, what is the fucking point? I'd be pissed if Guatemala or Caribbean Island made us play on a field that shitty, its just not acceptable and a fucking embarrassment. Are superstars (or their clubs) from other countries going to refuse to play against the US out of fear of injury on a shitty field? It wasn't just the pitch, but the sight lines didn't work on TV, and they didn't even have a proper bench! They put chairs on a platform on the middle of the baseball field. The US must have at least 50 top quality fields to play USMNT games on, this is unacceptable.
I'm sure with a little age and experience, Guzan will learn the position and stop making disastrous mistakes. Let's be patient with him.
