Basically, that was a failure. Candidates ran roughshod over the moderators and spoke way longer than they were supposed to, the questions were largely a bunch of "dance for us", non-policy driven TV, the answers were standard empty platitudes, sound bites and anecdotes, and they talked more or less not at all about jobs and the economy, other than a couple of pivots from questions not directly about jobs and the economy. And Biden, who started well, really fell apart as the thing went on, which (along with the protestors interrupting him) is probably 90% of what people will talk about following tonight.

I'm sure this debate helped some candidates' chances to get the nomination and hurt others', but it sure as hell didn't do anything for the Democrats' chances of beating Trump.

Is this really the point of the primary season debates though? The point of these debates is to appeal to Democratic voters, and to distinguish oneself from the other Democratic candidates, all of whom the primary electorate views as clearly superior to Trump. The biggest “highlights” of the 2016 GOP Primary debates were Trump calling his opponents names (Lyin’ Ted, Little Marco, etc.) and Trump’s “debate” with Rubio about whether his hand size means he has a small dick. It’s still only September 2019 and if the Democratic candidate cannot articulate his or her case vs. Trump in the several months long general election campaign that will come next year, then we’re in even worse shape than I realized.

It is when the number one priority of Democratic primary voters is, according to them, finding someone who can beat Donald Trump.

I had a couple Bernie Bros friend me on Facebook because of my anti-Horsford rant the other night and I already had to mute them. All they do is bitch about Warren (no joke like 10 posts a day). I’m on record that I prefer Warren but I have no interest in dragging Bernie in public (if you don’t believe me check out my FB/Twitter feeds.) I’m honest here with you guys but we’re all voting Dem and we can afford to not spare any criticisms amongst ourselves.

How do these people think this shit is at all helpful to their cause or the country? (And I’m legitimately asking you guys to tell me to fuck off if I diss Bernie or the eventual candidate on social media.)

Politics is a horseshoe, not linear. These dudes aren't self aware. Those same types cannot see how they are exactly like the right wing versions of themselves.

I had an English teacher in high school that was out of his mind liberal in the most insufferable way. Green before green was a thing. Self professed male feminist. Worshipped Ani DiFranco. He was never wrong, ever.

And my class would hear the stories from other teachers about how he and the history teacher would go at it over politics at lunch, in the break room, wherever. This was in 1999/2000 before political radicalization was confined to white bread militias in Idaho.

Later on once Facebook and Twitter became things, I added him as a friend. Every fucking post was anti-Bush. Later on Obama walked on water. I had to mute him.

Then one day he bitches about how "Trump sent a NUCLEAR CAPABLE B-52 to show force over Korea and blah blah blah." I, having worked on those planes and was present in Korea when Obama did the same exact thing, politely pointed it out to him. His reaction was ridiculous. I reacted back. And he basically accused me of being some conservative shitbag and basically a brainwashed dude.

Unfriended. Unfollowed. And I haven't thought about him until this very moment. Basically, what I'm saying is these dudes could be Warren Sisters and they'd be the same person. Ultimately your point is right, but people love to be in a tribe so they can feel acceptance and FUCK YOU IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE.

I do think — and Trump is absolutely one of them — there are just some politicians where people are just out of control with their zeal. Maybe because I am (and most if not all of you are) fairly realistic and live in the real world I realize there’s shades of gray to most things but I think I have to automatically question candidates that get people that riled up. EVERY candidate has their zealots. I totally get that. But it somehow just seems outside the pale with Trump and Bernie. People weren’t this apeshit about Romney, McCain, Bush, etc or really even Obama (though to be fair maybe close in the 08 election but that was happening in a slow-moving national crisis and there was the black thing but even if that’s true nothing like that existed through his term or the ‘12 election).

Look I’m voting for Bernie in November 20 if he’s the guy and I’ll donate money and I might even phone bank or something but there’s a weird cult of personality around him and I absolutely do not fuckin’ get it.

Strongly disagree with the bolded as it applies to Bush and Obama. Bush’s popularity plummeted post-2005 but he had some seriously zealous support before then. I remember my parents getting sent chain emails from Republican friends of theirs that literally compared GW Bush to Jesus. Obama also had (and still has) tons of very, very loyal supporters. Everytime he got outfoxed by the GOP in a negotiation, or bailed on a progressive policy, we had to hear that he was really just “playing the long game” and not to question the 4-D chessmaster.

Even if that’s all true, there’s apparently a whole cottage industry of these wacko “fake news” sites on Facebook (and I am NOT using the term ironically) spreading crazy ass shit about Biden and Warren and Beto (and maybe others) though those were the Big Three targets I saw from these guys and I don’t see that shit from anyone backing any other Dem candidates. (I have seen some weird Gabbard propaganda stuff to be fair.)

ETA: To be further fair, I have to almost wonder if it’s some kind of nutty false flag thing but I’m almost certain that’s not it and I don’t see the end in it if it is.

Purity of message behind their -ism, be it racism or socialism. And Hillary had the same (misplaced) cult of feminism.

And to the false flag, maybe it’s the circles I run in, but I’ve never met a real live “Bernie bro”. I don’t even fully get how a “bro” would be for Bernie.

Yeah, when Trump held a rally in STL back in 2016, there were way more prototypical “bro” types in his crowd of supporters than you’d see at a rally for Sanders (or any other leftist politician). Sanders has a diverse group of supporters, by gender, race and socioeconomic background, and the whole “Bernie Bro” nonsense was made up from wholecloth by the Clinton campaign to dismiss a legitimate primary challenge to her as a sexist endeavor.

Stank, ragged and entitled? I've seen those before. Actually most Bernie fans I know are new England liberals. So yeah, stank, ragged and entitled.

Yeah, the Bernie Bro moniker is an unfortunate head fake. It's really just Bernie Zealots.

Anyone at this point that is tearing down other candidates with fake news bullshit online to lift up their candidate is a complete and utter asshole that can't see the forest for the trees (to put it in the most extremely mild way.)

Bernie Bots is probably closer to the point. But this kind of explains that the Sanders campaign is starting to attack Warren now, so that honestly explains a lot of what I've been seeing.

Just one of those things I wonder, given that seemingly all "Bernie Bro" "harassment" occurs online. Which isn't to say there aren't those types at all, but enough to have their own sub-genre that drives public perception?

I don't have the time to go find it, but I'm pretty sure in the reporting and investigation around Meuller it was found that a significant part of the Russian efforts were creating fake Bernie supporter accounts to get folks on the right stirred up. So, just going by that, there's no other real impetus for anyone else to get this treatment... yet.
