Final Jeopardy! Challenge, November and TOC '19

Post by L-Jam3 »

Big win for Pru winning October! New month, and yesterday started the Tournament of Champions.

Friday, November 1:

CATEGORY: RELIGION

CLUE: This denomination took its name from this day, as told in the New Testament, when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles

ANSWER:
[+] spoiler
What is Pentacostalism?

Monday, November 4, Tournament of Champions Quarterfinal 1:

CATEGORY: ANCIENT HISTORY

CLUE: According to Herodotus, a messenger was sent 150 miles from Athens to Sparta, just before this 490 B.C. battle

ANSWER:
[+] spoiler
What is Marathon? Yes, sometimes it's just that easy.
So I missed them both,
[+] spoiler
with me overthinking Marathon, saying to myself "they're just throwing the messenger hint in there as red herring. I'm going with Thermopalye."

And it looks like they are pumping it up to All-Madden level. Opera and Ballet in already a category, although there were a couple easier ones. There should be a Wild Card coming from this game.

Got Marathon but definitely thought they were trying to throw you off making it too easy. Gut response is usually the right one.

Wednesday, November 6, ToC Quarterfinals Day 3

CATEGORY: 20TH CENTURY AMERICA

CLUE: In 1939, turned down by 2 local theaters, Howard University was able to get an outdoor venue for this singer's yearly concert

ANSWER:

Who is Marian Anderson?
Anyway, today James Holzhauer played, and to really no one's suprise, had the win locked up by FJ. One of the categories by total coincidence was "'ALL' IN", his catch phrase for Daily Doubles. At least I think it was coincidence. Because before a regular game is played, that day's categories are picked by lot; each taping of 5 games has 6 games at the ready, and the producers select which game by the contestants taking a numbered card at random. I assume they do the same for the Tourneys, albeit with tougher boards.

So I got that one right and move back to .500
