The Best Nation in the World...

Post by DSafetyGuy »

"Donation". Or at least that's what that panhandler told me on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade and it took a significant amount of self-control to not start a fight.

But seriously, our "keep the Swamp alive" fund that was started over eight years ago has now eroded to the point where I now have to come to you, hat in hand, and ask for you to throw a few bones onto the pile so we can keep Jpops in the black (if only howard was around to remind us how much Jpops sucks).

Preferred method of donation is to PayPal funds to SwampDSafe at the email of the googles. If you desire another method of contribution, you can email me at that address, send a DM, email me at my normal email address, or whatever.

This will remain an announcement until we raise enough money to keep the hosting going for another few years. What's your assessment of how much that would be, DSafe? I'll send some money your way as soon as I figure out my PayPal password.

Ditto. What's the damage. And how much to buy Zipper a front page so we can be the new Deadspin?

The first round of donations in 2011 netted $1,131.79 and we haven't had to ask for more money since then (looking at my records for paying out, Jpops hasn't asked for money every year). Based on what we have now ($148.14) and the current cost of keeping the lights on for a year ($228), if we get another $1,000 in donations, that would keep the site up for about five years.

We'll leave this up for a few days. If you've already given, thanks and let's give the folks who haven't been around today yet a chance to kick in over the next few days, but I think we should set a goal of about $1,000 before we call off the pledge drive for a few years. If we're not there by next Friday we'll discuss next steps at that point.

To be clear, jpops has never asked for this money. And in fact, multiple times he has said he doesn't want the repayment. But I get the yearly notices from A Small Orange too so I know when to tell DSafe to send him some money.

Yes, drop me an email or PM, as my sign and I are not going to be on College Gameday this week.

Weird how I don't have the email from PayPal or a record of your earlier donation in my spreadsheet.

I wonder if that lurker who donated on 2011 is still lurking. Hello, choateward (screen name he gave me "in case I ever do join"), wherever you are.

Is there a line on your spreadsheet to account for blowing JPops? We each give in our own ways.

Your three donations have all been for different sums.

This is where you lord it over the rest of us that you randomly made a donation in 2016.

Received, sir.

To update, I've received almost $850 thus far with more on its way and I'm waiting until the end to make my donation and add in that one on its way and a couple than have been venmo'd to me. Balance in the account will be over $800 after that point and the reimbursement to Jpops, but you can continue to send them in.

Jpops has been reimbursed, account will be over $1,000 once everything is settled, even if we receive no new donations from this moment.

There's not likely to be an excess. The money will pay for about four to five years of hosting, so DSafe will transfer money as need to reimburse JPops (who pays the hosting provider). But it means we won't have to send any more money again until the Donald Trump Jr. administration!

I thought Dsafe was going to make perfect bets with it so we can treat the hosting like an annuity. I mean there is no way that Northwestern will lose to a former D2 team playing its 2nd D1 game ever.

Got it, bengal.

And, yes, the money just sits in the PayPal account in the interim. JPops has not hit us up for every year of service in years past, so we seem to be a little more insistent on reimbursing him... meaning Shirley is now cc'd on the receipt sent to Pops and emails me to send the reimbursement.
