Ha, though I'd settle for them replacing some of their on-air talent, just not with xenophobic bigots, hopefully.
You heard it here first. I'm predicting that Cherry is dead before the end of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The crazy thing is that Cherry is racist, has been for years, and this has nothing to do with poppies. It's ok make fun of Swedes and Russians but Canadian immigrants must have been the line crossed.
I see more poppies now than ever so I don't know why this was the year he went off.
I work with a guy from Saudi Arabia. This year was his first remembrance day in Canada. He asked what the red flower on my jacket was, so I explained to him about the symbolism it has from Belgium and Northern France, and the significance of 11:00am on Nov 11th.
The next day he'd bought his entire family poppies to wear

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Yeah, there was another American journalist who happened to be on assignment in Toronto last weekend and said he had actually noticed how many people of color were wearing the poppies by way of noticing that literally almost every man was wearing one, which has usually been the case in my experience as well, but I haven't been to Canada in November in about a decade.
So this was probably just Cherry being Cherry. He probably literally saw like two guys in his neighborhood without one and went off from there.

Always hated the guy.
One of Rob Ford's earliest public supporters - an indication of the type of mentality at work here.
One less cro-magnon to worry about.
I was at the grocery store today at 11:00. An announcement was made that it was time for a moment of silence, and nobody said a word. Everyone wears poppies here, as Brian said, he might have seen one "foreigner" not wearing one.

There's also a story here about how forced displays of patriotism are not patriotic, but a form of fascism.

Amen.
There's a very fine line though, and recent years here have seen an increase in the "commercialisation" of Remembrance Day.

It's easy to "defend*" his bias against Europeans, because it can easily be shrouded in Hockey Rivalry type emotion. yeah the rant about the poppy is so dumb.
What if I bought a poppy and it fell off, those things are flimsy.
Or I decided to switch coats.
Or already donated to something else military.
Cops and Military is Cherry's soapbox. Good Canadian boys.

Well, not what the Kings imagined anyways. Just barely into the second year of 3x$6.25! I'm hearing most of that was front loaded though, and some time soon, (Dec1?), he's only owed 700k more this year and $4.25 next.

The rumors have been out there, but I really didn't think they would come true.
Babcock would look good in teal.

Firing DeBoer for Babcock would be a big balls move. High risk, high reward. Maybe VGK can get two coaches fired in a week after Thursday.

His seat is warming, for sure, and anything compared to last year would be a let down. That being said, they've only played 18 games (Tor, Det, Wsh, Edm, Vgk have all played 23, and Cgy has played 24), and 12 of those games have been away from home (10 true road games, 1 road Sweden game, 1 home Sweden game, 6 games at Amalie). They're also trying to focus more on defense, whatever that means. I think Coop has a lot of rope here.mister d wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 5:07 pmI really thought you meant Cooper?govmentchedda wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 4:59 pm I certainly wasn't expecting it to happen today, but you're right, the rumors were out there.

What's his relationship with their GM/whomever replaced Yzerman in their front office? I ask because the Athletic had an article about if there is any possibility of Babcock coming back to Detroit and it, of course, got into the "this GM didn't hire this coach" line as it related to Yzerman-Blashill and the possibility of Yzerman-Babcock in Detroit, citing their Canadian Olympic team link.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 5:52 pmHis seat is warming, for sure, and anything compared to last year would be a let down. I can't see Detroit turning to Dan Bylsma, who is on their staff, if they decide to move on from Blashill (Yzerman has been positive about Blashill and the team in the one time he has spoken since the beginning of the season, so it hasn't been speculated beyond the preseason levels to this point). Special teams have been part of Bylsma's responsibilities with the Wings and they have been grotesque more often than not, even considering their overall lack of talent.
In other words, what are the usual coach-GM politics bullshit in Tampa?

Coop and Brisbois worked together as coach and GM in Norfolk/Syracuse. Technically, GM of Norfolk/Syracuse is assistant GM for the Lightning. I believe the organization is high on Benoit Groulx (current coach in Syracuse) though.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 10:19 amWhat's his relationship with their GM/whomever replaced Yzerman in their front office? I don't think Coop has lost the room. He seems to get on well with the team. What irks me about him is that he's sort of trying to fashion the Bolts into something that they're not. I think he's got a roster that's meant to just fly around the ice, and he tries to shackle them a bit into playing more sound defensively. I'm not sure that's this team's strength. Last season's playoffs are a decent example. Sure, the whistles get swallowed in the spring, but I think part of the neutering of the Bolts last year was self imposed. I could be way off here, but I kind of want to see the Bolts just fly around, playoff officiating be damned.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
That's from Joe Smith, Bolts beat writer with the Athletic, in his game recap from 2 nights ago.Ever since the Lightning’s stunning first-round collapse against Columbus in April, they’ve tried to reshape their identity. They aimed to blend their high-skill mode with less risk, be more responsible defensively and generally be harder to play against. It feels like they wanted to be more like the Blues, which is admirable, but the fact is they’re not built the same way.

Eh, can never be upset about a third-period comeback to save a point in the regular season. Still a “0” in that second column for VGK against the Sharks this year. Until that changes it’s a good set of results.
