We turned noelle off after 10 minutes.
My gall is sufficiently mitigated. Thank you for your concern.

Knives Out was legitimately great. And fun.

Re: Movies
Yeah it was. Even the cranky old guy sitting next to me, who complained about every movie shown in the trailers (with good reason, to be fair), loved it. At the end he turned to his wife and said 'Now that was quality movie-making'.
And if you are interested, Rian Johnson, Ricki Lindhome, and Noah Segan were guests on 'Doug Loves Movies' and told some great stories about the filming of the movie.
Re: Movies
I'm super late to this party, but finally watched Buster Scruggs last night. Really enjoyed it. My favorite was the first segment, with Tim Blake Nelson in the title role. But, I liked them all.

Good Boys is so damn funny.
And sweet as well (even when dealing with very inappropriate material. It really captured what it's like to be a 12 year old boy. (Or at least, I think it did. It;s been a while...)

You could make a serious argument that Francis Ford Coppola’s third-best movie is The Godfather.

Re: Movies
Was just coming to post about that. I watched it on a flight this morning. I knew absolutely nothing about the movie other than I'd heard good things. Loved it. I'm probably a sucker for that whole high school party genre, but that was one of the best.
I then watched The Shape of Water on the return flight tonight. It was actually good too, but it shouldn't have won Best Picture.
Oh, I and I watched The Irishman over several sittings over the last week or so. It's the best work Deniro and Pacino have done in decades.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Movies
Have not seen Booksmart but heard great stuff about it. People kept talking about how good the movie is and the fact that everyone has always loved Beanie Feldstein since she was little (she is Johna Hill's sister--9 years younger)

Funny that you guys are all watching Booksmart on a plane. There was a bit of a kerfuffle, IIRC, when Olivia Wilde (director) found out that the version edited for viewing on airplanes had a lesbian sex scene cut out.

Kung Fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene..

The theme is cool. Excited to see what they do with it as a whole.

The Way, Way Back was just on IFC. Crazy underrated movie. Sam Rockwell's roguish charm has never been used to better effect.

Saw The Irishman last night. Really, really enjoyed it and if Joe Pesci doesn't win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor then there's no justice in the world.

Re: Movies
I finally finished it a couple of days ago (took me about 4 separate viewings to finish it).
I thought it was ok. I mean...it was good, and yes, Pesci was fantastic. But it was way too long, and for me, the 'de-aging' stuff was just strange, and looked ridiculous. Just get younger actors to play the characters. It worked in Goodfellas.
Re: Movies
This is a case where I don't think the length was self-indulgent though. Scorsese, a 76-year-old man, is making a pretty clear statement.

Re: Movies
Yeah, the anti-aging stuff was a bit distracting to me too. Almost the uncanny valley at times. And DeNiro still didn't look that young. Still, I thought the movie was great. Made me want to read that book.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Movies
Add me to the list of guys who loved The Irishman. First movie in 20 years where DeNiro seemed like he really cared about his role.

Apropos of nothing, but if you had told me around 1995 that come 2020 the two best creators of movie scores in the world would be one of the guys from Radiohead and the guy from Nine Inch Nails I probably wouldn't have believed it, but definitely would have been excited about it.

Re: Movies
So at the cottage this weekend, our host was very excited about "The Two Popes."
Half hour in, his male partner heads off to bed (right after the first mention of Pope Benedict's feelings towards Gay marriage). One hour in, our host says he's enjoying it, but is having trouble staying awake. Off to bed.
Which leaves three Jews watching it. My friend falls asleep and my wife and I watched the last half hour literally heckling the TV.
It's okay I guess, and very well acted. But come on man!

1-0 for Germany
I kid, I kid.
To be honest, I didn't really notice it which is usually a good sign. All the tech stuff was really well done. it is a beautiful movie.

Just got back from seeing this and I co-sign completely. Lots of great acting but Daniel Craig was tremendous in his role.

Re: Movies
Watched Aeronauts (Amazon studios...guess it was in the movies for a bit..but now on Prime) last night. 3 Stars from me. Not bad, not good. Perfect for something to watch last night but probably could have found something better with a bit of effort. Enjoyed seeing that the guy from Yesterday and the guy from the Potter spinoff are able to book work.

Edit Was Done In 2014edwzipper wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2019 6:06 pm Trump edited out of Home Alone 2 in Canada.

Supporters of Trump, including his son Donald Trump Jr., reacted angrily, believing the move by the public broadcaster was politically motivated.
CBC spokesperson Chuck Thompson confirmed Thursday that Trump's scene and others were cut from the film five years ago to make way for commercials.
"As is often the case with feature films adapted for television, Home Alone 2 was edited for time," Thompson said. "The scene with Donald Trump was one of several that were cut from the movie as none of them were integral to the plot. These edits were done in 2014, when we first acquired the film and before Mr. Trump was elected president."

In today's episode of Rex Watches A Movie 18 Months After Everyone:
Hey, Black Panther was good! I don't even like comic book movies and I thought that was solid with a lot of twists and themes that were pretty unexpected to me. Only complaint is they could have given Michael B. Jordan's character a little more room to breathe but I guess that's what sequels are for.

Thanks for writing this for me. I'm fine having put the time in, found it fairly interesting. Re: Movies
I have two kids in college... They are not typically down with just sitting down and watching a show or movie, unless the stars align just so.
On Christmas morning, we had about 90- minutes to kill before going over to the in-laws for Present Opening Pt. 2.
So I suggested we watch Klaus on Netflix. Well, they liked it so much we watched the whole thing making us a little late.
It's kind of an instant classic, IMO.

Re: Movies
Vulture (New York Magazine) ranked every movie from the 2010s. (After a fashion.)
Gotta say I agree with most of it and the #1 movie is out of left field a little, but a movie that has always stuck with me over the years so I can't argue it too much.
The worst movie of the decade will probably make a few people on here turn red with anger.
