90s Diss Track - Range Life vs You Get What You Give

Post by rass »

Maybe track is too strong. Verse?
Pavement - Range Life wrote:Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins
Nature kids, I/they don't have no function
I don't understand what they mean
And I could really give a fuck
The Stone Temple Pilots,
They're elegant bachelors
They're foxy to me
Are they foxy to you?
Brand New Radicals - You Get What You Give wrote:Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson,
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes, run to your mansions
Come around, we'll kick your ass in.

I've always lumped these two songs together not just because they both contain attacks on 90s rock peers, but due to the out of nowhere-ness of the attacks and where they are placed in the songs.

Beck and Smashing Pumpkins are probably the most critically adored of the targets, so that's a split.

If you prefer your songs to rhyme, then Hanson->Manson->Mansions->ass in just can't be beaten.

Malkmus' lyrics seem to be a little more personal, or more targeted, and therefore more vicious, but the faux-tough guy delivery of "we'll kick your ass in" gets me every time.

No bonus points in this poll for the Billy Squier riff at the end of Range Life.

Different classes. Pavement's feels personal whereas Brand New Radicals seems rhyme based and probably the most hollow "threat" ever put in a song.

That was cool how you efficiently boiled what I posted down to one sentence and used it as an argument to kill my entire comparison.

Is it better or worse that I didn't even read your notes because the comp itself had me ready to respond?

They're both good songs that I have enjoyed, and will still not groan when they play on the radio. I feel like articles have been written on this, but it is kind of crazy that BNR didn't have any more songs. It's a really catchy pop track.

Clearly also thinking of BNH, who did Dream On Dreamer, which I think has the record for most times played during a Real World episode.

I think you have to factor in that Pavement (and Stephen Malkmus) are infinitely cooler then New Radicals, which adds to the level of diss.

That YGWYG verse is also immediately preceded by disses to health insurance and big banks, so I give it points for managing to still be super-topical despite mentioning Hanson.

I think I’m cracking a bit.

I heard You Get What You Give on the radio on the way home from a 4:30am shopping trip and turned it up and started to sing and
This whole damn world, could fall apart
You'll be ok, follow your heart
You're in harms way, I'm right behind
Now say you're mine
I started to tear up!

Though as soon as I realized that the caterwauling “oooooooos” and “ Health insurance rip off lying...” kicked in and it passed. But I’m more worried than I’ve let myself acknowledge.

Even though GPJ never stopped fighting and his will to live was stronger than most – I think he knew that this day might come. The words to the song are: “I'm all about mouth fuckin’, only if you down for dick suckin’, if not, B.J. and the Bear, keep truckin’.”

OK yeah I checked out the Hallmark channel at some point last night and yeah I watched for a couple of minutes because the female lead was cute, and watched for a couple of more minutes because it was an amnesia-based plot and those are the best.

Anyway, as one would assume given the calendar it was a winter movie. The male lead offered to drive the female lead into town, in a convertible, if she "trusted him". So he pulls up in a white convertible sedan with the top down, tells her the heat is blasting, and shows her a thermos full of hot chocolate. They pull out of the driveway, and the next shot is an aerial view of them driving down a road across a snow-covered countryside. Cut to a close-up of the car interior, male lead turns on the radio, and...

That blares from the speakers and they both start singing along and after a few joyful seconds the male lead becomes confused because how could the female lead know the lyrics if she has no memory from prior to two or three days earlier when she fell on ice and hit her head and she says she heard it in a store yesterday hahaha but we know that she really just regained her memory an hour or two earlier but doesn't want to tell the male lead because she's the supposedly mean incognito wine reviewer who gave his business a bad review because he accidentally released a vintage or whatever of Merlot with bad corks and she wouldn't give the place a second chance before panning it.

One of the kids was constantly playing that a couple of months ago and I while I thought it didn't sound like a new song I never bothered to look it up. Until this week when the news came out that it could have been New Radicals first song because ol' bucket hat head (no not mister d) co-wrote it, and I learned it was released in 2001. And I guess was so popular recently because it was used in Saltburn.
