Well, not quite the slam dunk we were hoping for, but apparently Bloomberg described Booker as "well-spoken."

As one who has spent basically his entire life in the proximity of Jews in their mid-70s, I can pretty much verify that this is a more modern version of "a credit to his race."Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2019 4:55 pm Well, not quite the slam dunk we were hoping for, but apparently Bloomberg described Booker as "well-spoken."

Hoping for a Booker zinger where he mentions stop and frisk if they're both in the debate stage.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
I'm not a big fan of Booker's politics but there's no question that he's really, really smart. Calling someone with a Stanford/Yale Law/Rhodes Scholar educational background "well spoken" -- as if that's somehow a surprise -- is quite the telling slip.
Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
I just assume that old people are just stuck in their acceptable level of racist when they were younger anyway.
But yea. This was literally the joke Chris Rick made in 1995.
"He speaks so well. He's so we'll spoken. No shit! He's an educated man. What did you expect him to sound like? IMMA BE PRES-O-DENT."
But that was about Colin Powell. Still applies here.

Pretty big gates from its army base days.
ETA there is a fucking exposed exhaust fan mechanism with a table in front of it. Four feet off the floor a 36" metal fan just begging to mangle a hand two feet above a laundry table. At least there is a dusty metal grate on the outside of the fan blade so your hand won't fall behind the building.

Mayor Pete just lost Michigan (BCBS/MI) and Nevada (Dept. of Energy) to Trump if he's the candidate. The Department of Energy is the most hated government entity to Nevadans and it isn't even close.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
That list definitely means that he’s done work for/with those entities and the concern is that it’s work that fucked over others or was otherwise in pursuit of unethical goals. Based on the time periods in question, and what’s known about what some of those entities were doing then, it’s highly likely to be the case.
Personally, I don’t think Pete is necessarily a bad guy for having worked for McKinsey. I’m pretty close in age to him and went to a similarly elitist undergrad and can attest that there was a lot of institutional pressure to work for places like that. Undergraduate Career Services made it seem like finance and management consulting were the only two options, and people spoke of places like Goldman Sachs and McKinsey in reverent tones. However, given his comparatively slender political experience and recent sharp turn rightward to go after Warren, these criticisms are absolutely fair game.
Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
“It doesn’t necessarily make him a bad guy” doesn’t mean “it shouldn’t disqualify him from President in 2020”, just to state the obvious. Same rule as Harris.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
It depends where the Democrats want to be. If working for these companies 10 years ago is a disqualifier then do be it. The voters in the primaries will decide.
But going this far will push away many voters in the general. There may be affluent progressive voter who have kids in the same boat.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
The number of persuadable voters whose kids work for ultra-elite companies like McKinsey or on Wall Street is dwarfed by the number of voters who personally have lost their jobs or otherwise had their lives uprooted by actions those companies have taken.degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 10:03 am It depends where the Democrats want to be. ETA: Obama had a ton of appeal to affluent progressives but he also probably won re-election because of his forceful attacks on Romney’s private equity work. The “when Mitt Romney came to town” ad was a devastating piece of economic populism.

True but Obama took the middle ground. Yes these companies and wall street are hurting you and Romney's a private sector hack but i don't think he ever attacked the institutions themselves or tried to "remake capitalism", Warren's words.Joe K wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 10:29 amThe number of persuadable voters whose kids work for ultra-elite companies like McKinsey or on Wall Street is dwarfed by the number of voters who personally have lost their jobs or otherwise had their lives uprooted by actions those companies have taken.degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 10:03 am It depends where the Democrats want to be. You know how the GOP will always frame it. "There's nothing wrong with trying to be rich and successful. Liberals hate rich people and want to punish hard work. They are punishing Major Pete for pursuing success at a major company during his youth"

There is no other country in the world where elections are such big business. There will never be meaningful electoral reform because so many people making a living off of them. Local and national tv networks probably balance their books based on what they haul in during elections.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
I don’t see this having much impact on the race but it further confirms my perception that Buttegieg is an annoyingly self-interested striver for power. You could say the same about many in politics but I really doubt that either of the candidates I prefer (Sanders and Warren) even thought about running for office until well into their adult lives. Pete was probably brainstorming his campaign posters when he was still in middle school.

This line of attack bothers me though.
Am I not supposed to go to a good school? Democrats are all for immigrants. What do immigrants do? Sacrifice their entire lives to get their kids into Ivy League Schools. Then at those school they are ambitious and graduate top of the class. Then get hired by the biggest firms.

Again, the question isn’t if Pete is a bad person. It’s whether, at age 37, he’s the best choice in a talented field of competitors to be the most powerful political figure on Earth.degenerasian wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2019 11:02 am This line of attack bothers me though.

Cory Booker went to super fancy schools before becoming a mayor at a young age, and he did more to try to help the underserved as a young leader than Pete. Bernie went to U. Chicago and got arrested at civil rights protests. Warren has taught at super prestigious schools and could have been financially set for her and her children’s lifetimes without lifting a finger to help the middle class.

It's also not a "line of attack." It's a reporter doing her job. The campaign and Pete are denying that he's been doing this and they are full of shit.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
“Disloyal” is a very loaded choice of words there and I think it’s a strange way of interpreting those results. Putting aside Gabbard, who’s a huge outlier, you could view the results very differently. A different way to interpret the results is that the candidates at the bottom of the list have done a better job of appealing to voters who aren’t already guaranteed Dem voters than the candidates at the top of the list have. At least with Yang that seems very likely to be true. That doesn’t necessarily mean that those candidates are more electable — I doubt that Yang generates enough base enthusiasm, for example. But it could and probably should be framed in broad strokes as a positive (they could do well with swing voters) and not a negative (their voters are “disloyal”).
