Re: Netflix Suggestions?
My overall point is that they haven't really given the show much of a chance, if one of their first and foremost critiques is that the lead actors wig and eye contacts aren't realistic. Whatever.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Re: Netflix Suggestions?
I'm referring mostly to their above-the-genre attitude. They spend a lot of print space on hair color and the silly names of things, which again, can be lofted at anything in the genre. And parallel plots that don't intersect until later in the series? The horror! And I'm pretty sure they critiqued the bard for being bad and annoying when his character is, in fact, supposed to be bad and annoying.brian wrote: ↑Fri Dec 27, 2019 1:43 pmI might have to re-read the review but I didn't get the impression that's what they were doing. There was an acknowledgment that the genre is expected to not be realistic, but even given that the material was still kind of laughable (according to them). And if I understood correctly, I think that's fair.P.D.X. wrote: ↑Fri Dec 27, 2019 1:36 pmExactly. Anyone can pan a fantasy movie/series; the ridiculousness is baked into the genre. You can take their same critique angles and make LOTR sound laughable.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Fri Dec 27, 2019 9:18 am And I just read that review. Kind of fuck those two? One just watched the pilot and the other watched two episodes and skimmed through ep. 5 to view an orgy scene.
In other words, you can invent a world, but that world still needs to have some rules. You can't spend five hours on the LOTR trilogy and then all of the sudden Frodo discovers he knows how to fly now and drops the ring in Mount Doom that way. (I haven't seen the show, so I'm not suggesting anything as ridiculous as that is happening), but the overall critique that you can still judge a fantasy show based on the world in the show is fair.
Anyway, I'm on like Ep 5 and it does have plenty of laughable moments (did they really saddle the main character with the catchphrase of "Fuck."?), but it's far from the worst things that Netflix has put its logo on.

Re: Netflix Suggestions?
The Witcher is doing quite well in the download game. By some metrics, surpassing The Mandolorian this week (though, if it's just raw downloads, that's obviously a goofy number given how new Disney+ is).
It's also quite telling (to me) that critics have it something like 59 percent on Rotten Tomatoes while the audience is above 90 percent.
Whenever I see something like that, I'm pretty sure the critics are just being snobs and/or getting on some kind of social justice bullshit crusade. (Usually they overhype something like Ghostbusters, where a group of women takes over as leads. Sometimes they get it right with a movie like Black Panther, but that's just dumb luck most of the time.)
I don't mean to come off as a Fox News moron, but I have a real issue with the fucked up group think and posturing of movie critics. I've grown to pretty much ignore them and focus on audience data when it's available.
Totally off topic, but I have a strict rule of not paying attention to critical review of Star Wars movies and barely dipped into the criticism of GOT. I just don't think people can be even mildly objective when franchises/shows get that big. Way too many hidden agendas.

Caught the first two episodes of that Messiah show that started on 1/1. Seems pretty good. Kind of a Homeland ripoff of sorts, but very well done.

First Chinese drama to air simultaneously in China and on Netflix is Handsome Siblings.
It's really good if you want to try something different. I'm up to Episode 20.

Finally watched American Factory and it’s hard to come away feeling like it’s basically a horror movie about how fucked the United States is and how badly this country has declined.

Agreed. He is just such a likable guy. I love when he is on Rogan's podcast. Even listened to him on Bert Kreisher's. An unusual special with a theme of a positive message of affirmation is what we all need right now.

My kids aren't really into watching movies. I think watching the hour-long shows on Netflix has really messed with their attention span. Having them sit for 2 hours watching a movie is a tough ask.A_B wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 9:18 pmYou’re a monster. I've heard the first two podcast episodes.
I'll have to watch the show. It is insanity...

I decided what the hell and started Tiger King last night...cut myself off after three episodes or else I was going to be up all night. Holy cow you all are right.
I was watching something else earlier this week (I can't remember but it was another documentary) and now Tiger King has further cemented this position: Few things are more dangerous than stupid people with money

I watched the first episode. Late last night I watched the ZZ Top documentary. And, even though I'm not a huge fan, it was really good! Worth checking out!
Re: Netflix Suggestions?
Yea, Tiger King was batshit insane. Kind of trailed off in the last couple episodes and had a bit of wonky editing (ex: the campaign manager switching between having a beard and not having a beard), but damn it was a ride.
I hated basically all of those people.

Re: Netflix Suggestions?
Downriver is pretty trashy to be sure though not the trashiest part of metro Detroit (that would probably be either Redford Township or Warren).
Sadly, rural western Michigan is exponentially even worse.
(And the rural areas in northern Michigan by where I went to college is worse even yet.)

I bet every state has that rural white trash section. And they all seem to have the same accent. It's weird.

The Marquette iron range!
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.
Re: Netflix Suggestions?
OK, not being pedantic but have to mention (and I DO realize) this makes no sense but the Upper Peninsula (UP) is not northern Michigan (despite the fact that Northern Michigan University is in Marquette, which is in the UP.
Like I said, confusing. Michiganders differentiate between the UP and northern Michigan so northern Michigan means the northern Lower Peninsula and we will refer to anything in the UP as the UP.
This has been today’s Michigan geography lesson.
