NYPS and CCSD (Clark County School District (i.e. Las Vegas) were the last two large school districts in the country open and they seemed to have a staring contest for awhile there, but both cancelled classes around the same time.
ETA: CCSD is the fifth-largest public school district in the country believe it or not behind NY, LA, Chicago and Dade County.

So ... a family member on my wife's side died unexpectedly a few days ago in San Antonio. We weren't particularly close to the person who died, but my wife's sister was. They're not having a funeral, but a really small viewing in a few days. My wife and I really don't want to fly there. Driving would take 20 hours each way, plus days of eating in restaurants and staying in hotels. We feel shitty for even thinking about not going, but it seems pretty reckless. Especially since we have no idea how things will be in a week while we're gone.
If not for the virus, we'd go without question. But we can't figure out what to do.

The mom of one of my best friends in Elementary School died last week. They were going to have a memorial service this weekend, but they've put it off.

Speaking of funerals and death, look at the obituary pages this Italian newspaper jumped to since the spread of the virus.

Just now from the CDC:
BREAKING: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending halting gatherings of more than 50 people across the United States for the next eight weeks, citing the risk of the coronavirus.
The CDC’s new Sunday guidance came after Ohio and Illinois ordered the statewide closure of bars and restaurants to combat spread of the coronavirus, while the Federal Reserve made an emergency interest rate cut to zero on Sunday night. Governments worldwide are making tough decisions aimed at keep their citizens safe from the pandemic.

If you have time, drive. If you rent a small motor home you can avoid staying in hotels or eating in a bunch of restaurants.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 6:45 pmDrive, drive, drive, drive, drive... Not to pry about the type of surgery she's having, but by April 13th she may not be having surgery. Most hospitals around here (starting with the one my GF works at) are delaying all 'elective' surgeries. If its not life-or-death, they made not be doing the procedure.sancarlos wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 6:38 pm

Gotta question - what would a national quarantine look like? Would they give notice for people to get back home, for instance? Quinn and his girlfriend are with relatives south of Asheville (he drove) in lieu of his school trip to France - and I need to make sure they can get back home - so...
Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Her surgery was supposed to be in June, but her cardiologist told her that the calendar spot in April opened up and he thought it important to do the surgery sooner rather than later. So, I’d be surprised if it gets put off. At least as of now, New Mexico isn’t as much a virus hot spot as Washington.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 7:35 pmNot to pry about the type of surgery she's having, but by April 13th she may not be having surgery. If she can survive another few weeks without the surgery, it will be put off. Trust me, just overheard the decision 5 minutes ago for certain other hospitals. And the expectation is 8-12 weeks right now.sancarlos wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 8:06 pmHer surgery was supposed to be in June, but her cardiologist told her that the calendar spot in April opened up and he thought it important to do the surgery sooner rather than later.
